  • nice truck. like the previous generation a lot more, but like this generation quite a bit too.

  • I love videos like this. Im gonna make a tutoral when I get my five speed truck going. Cuz this kind of information is highly useful

  • you gotta be gentle with the shifter. the bushings and the dowels are fragile in those and if either break while you are driving you will be screwed!!!

  • lo, when u stop leav the truck in 1st gear.... parking brakes can fail

  • You make driving a standard look so easy, I grew up around standards an right now my buddy is tryin to teach me how to drive standard and when he drives his F-150 that things is jumping all over the place and hes constantly shifting.

  • These old twin I beam fords are the only i would buy. I owned a 95 f250 regcab auto 4x4 and it was a great work truck bought it for $1500 used and payed it off after a few landscape jobs, great truck for making me money in the summer. I've sold it now but I'm really thinking of picking up a 96 regcab manual 4X4. I know the old 300's are absolutely bullet proof but how are the 5 speed trannys? especially after 200,000km.

  • Look how smooth it runs...This is proof Ford makes the BEST pickups. It may not be pretty, but it's clearly reliable.

    Excellent video!

  • Makes me want a Ford, even though I'm a bit of a fan of American made Japanese cars and trucks like Nissan. My friend has a ford, bud sadly, it's automatic. I've liked that red dash they all have.

  • yeah i got the same truck there and your oil gage was low mine is 3/4 up also so you should check that out

  • Is your oil preasure idiot gauge still showing low? It probably shouldn't, Mine shows the better part of 3/4 on mine. You should keep an eye on the oil, bud.

  • I-6 4.9 efi 300cid 145 hp. 265 lbft torque! friendly advice put in reverse or first gear ,along with parking brake!!!! then if brake fails it wont roll on you! and you are using the gears to ,helps brakes last longer ,wont hurt as long as you slow to the proper speed for the particular gear . I have driven standards for over 30 years , I dont care for automatics.

  • It sounds like you have mazda m50 ,which has higher ratios than the s542zf heavy duty . you use 2nd to start with zf ,as 1st is way to low, mine will crawl up steep hill in 1st without touching gas pedal ! Inline 6 1965-1996. also no timing chain , it uses meshed gears.

  • MY 88 F150 I-6 300 HAS 320,000 MILES ON IT AND IS STILL GOING STRONG! I have the zfs542 industrial 5speed creeper low (granny) and overdrive 5th ,still shifts like it did when it was new . the majority of these trucks had the m50 mazda ,a much smaller transmission than the zf heavy duty . THE MAZDA UNIT DOESNT HAVE A CREEPER 1ST GEAR . IT IS LONG AND SKINNY, AS OPPOSED TO THE ZF ,WHICH IS SHORTER AND TALLER , WITH PTO COVERS ON EACH SIDE. ZF IS BEST!

  • Chad, you seem to have quite a knack for finding auctions and estate sales..maybe sometime you could make a tutorial video describing how you find all these sale locations.

  • I don't ever recall hearing a turn signal setup that makes that du ding like sound. We had a 1997 Chevy Blazer that made practically no sound at all.

I wish I had a vintage truck among other things. It would be something I wouldn't fret over if it got beat up. Unless i bought it in showroom condition.

  • You should try school auctions...there was an early 90's Chevrolet truck that sold at the auction for $350 or 400....the engine was in great shape. Only thing wrong with it was the paint was peeling.

  • My '91 F250 had the high beam clicker on the floor. Also, '92 was the year the front end and dash were restyled.

Looks like you are doing well running the clutch. One thing you are doing that isn't really necessary is putting the gearshift in various lower gears when decreasing speed without USING those gears. Simply let the truck coast down in the higher gear, depress the clutch, make the turn, shift directly to the appropriate lower gear and off you go.

  • Yes I guess you are right! I did try actually using the lower gears to provide engine braking too, later on.

  • I believe you got a good deal in that truck.

  • That truck sure rides smooth. Lol you have the same problem as mine, damn door you have to slame it so it closes well lol.

  • That seems to be the only real problem with the truck...everything inside the doors is busted up for some reason and it is hard to get the doors open from the inside.

  • just the wear and tear of a school maintenance truck. alot of getting in and out, without alot of mileage.

  • The engine sounds really quiet! That's typical of inline-6 engines -- they're usually very quiet and smooth-running. BTW, I recall reading that the early '90s Ford F150 was the last new vehicle to still have the high beam switch on the floor. Is that true with yours?

  • I've read that to somewhere but it's not only for the F-150 it's for all F-series trucks. My 1990 F-250 has it on the floor.

  • Actually mine has the high-beam on the turn signal switch...probably when they changed to this style of steering column/wheel is when they did it. I'm thinking 1991 or 92 is the first year for it. Also in the 70's I know some of the F-series still had the key on the dashboard rather than in the steering column a lot longer than most other vehicles.

  • those 300 straight 6 engines stive have a very strong reputation!

  • is that your white and red bus. if so make a video of it

  • I will try to soon!

  • thank you

  • He he... Not used to clutching an manual shifting? Not to brag to much, but as a norwegian i do double-clutching with revving, heel-toe downshifting and the whole package. it's fun to do some pedalling. :)

  • No, I'm not all that used to it! But the red and white International bus I have, you do have to do double clutching.

  • Really great video! It was interesting to see you shifting and down shifting. I wish there was more room out here in Ohio so I could learn stick. It can be a bit embarrising when trying to learn manual esp when you stall. Out there in texas I am sure you have a lot of deserted areas you can go unnoticed. You sure did get a steal on that truck though! I am sure it will last you a life time with the proper maintaining

  • Thank you! This truck was taken real good care of by the school district. The wheel bearings are freshly greased and the oil is as clean as brand new (just had to add 1/2 a quart). I certainly will care for it just as well.

It is good that I live in the country where I can practice with it in very simple driving situations...every time I drive it though I get better.
