  • @RichardElden No, they gave us the Welfare State.

The election of the Attlee government in 1945 with a 159-seat majority demonstrates the thirst for change, the desire to build a society better for everyone, to begin the process of decolonisation and make the world a better place.

  • It is very clear that there was a desperate need for new housing at this time. The real damage to our towns and cities was caused by the town planners of the 50s and 60s. What they did to many of those places was nothing short of criminal.

  • The moustache on the man at 0.44 went on to play the moustache on Wing Commander Rushford in "They Gave for You" (1947) and the moustache on Charles Grebil in" Is that My banana" (1976)

  • Ha ha... how come the guy says "erection" at 00:49 but Charles doesn't say "ooOOOoooh!"

  • @incongra Ha ha, very good point! Still, after this was filmed he know doubt had plenty of time to quaff huge quantities of brandy in Soho bars and pick up a sailor,

  • @andyhowpog I always laugh at that meaty builder type, "checking out Charles' buns" at 05:22

  • @incongra Ha ha, very well spotted! Sounded like he said "public arse" when he said "public house" because of the way he was sizing up Charlie's arse cheeks!

  • The girl at 5.25 is Patricia Driscoll, who, over ten years later, went on to find fame playing Maid Marian in the TV series The Adventures of Robin Hood.

  • Many prefabs were still going fifty years later.

  • And we still had an Empire then as well. Look at the crap state of the UK now....just TV celebrities, overpaid footballer and lower class morons poncing of the state.

  • On there's so much to enjoy in this!

Accents and an avuncular style long vanished.

Superb wing commander mustache and lots of Brylcreem! Wonderful hats, telephone, typewriter, pipes.

Class division still going strong . . .

    And . . .

Charles Haughtry pretending to be interested in prefabrication and NOT reacting to an excellent opportunity for double entendre. He's still a very camp cigarette smoker though!

  • i used to live in one of those, round about 1955, they knocked them down in about 1967, this was in manchester,

  • Hi muffinisis. You didn't happen to live in Fallowfield, did you?

  • Some of those prefabs still exist. They were only supposed to house people for 15 years.

  • @anajinn Do you have an address of where you can find those prefabs? An address I could visit using Google streetview? Curious to see how they look like nowadays.

  • I don't, I'm afraid. I have lived in Canada for a long time now. I remember seeing them in Manchester. There were some at the end of our road In Fallowfield. They may be gone now.

  • Thanks. That street is not visited by the google car unfortunately :( I think I did find another address in the UK though. Craigour Ave. in Edinburgh. I believe those little houses are remaining prefabs. Right?

  • Around Craigour Avenue 34 in Edinburgh.

  • Megs Jenkins actress with the baby.

  • Carry on ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,building !!!!!

  • CHARLES HAWTREY IN A SERIOUS ROLE !!!

  • He was an actor in those days too, before he went for comedy. If you remember Children's Hour on the Home Service, he played the part of Norman Bones in Norman & Henry Bones.

  • "I would like maybe three rooms, one for us and one for each of the children if different sexes, or if not one for my mother " she says "maybe we should start with two" he says Translation " im not having your mother staying in my new house Ha! Ha! Ha!!!!!!

  • "they will last no more than ten years" ha! ha! ha! I lived in a pre-fab house when i was a child, and that was in the mid seventies, only thirty years later. They built things to last in those days (even if it was only meant to be 10 years). I dont know why the govt. cant do it now with modern efficent technology it should be easy to create housing for everyone.

  • isn't that the guy from the carry on films?!

  • @Shanniquitie yes it's charles hawtrey!

  • Is the interviewer Charles Hawtrey?

  • Clodwins and darge cupboard? This is hilarious!

  • 5:16 Mid-level bureaucrat: "What kind of house would you like?"

Working class simpleton: "A public 'ouse!"

Ah the old days...when everyone fit a nice neat stereotypical image. ;)

  • Closely followed by,

    Attractive, well spoken young woman:

"As I shall be spending a lot of time in the kitchen...."

  • Was that Leo G. Carroll in this video?
