HOW IN THE NAME OF ALL THAT'S DECENT AND RIGHT IN THE WORLD CAN SOMEONE DISLIKE THIS........................GO PLAY WITH YOUR HAIR YOU FUCKIN' EMPTY PIECES OF SHIT
lets follow that fire truck...I think your house is burning down...
I get that old time feeling every time...crack the whiskey bottle open, throw away the cork, light a smoke...we are in it for the stretch...hop that frieght train in the hall...
what can my drunken ass even contribute here? its an amazing song, drunk or sober..but its inevitable, when i drink, and i'm alone, i look up Tom Waits and it puts me where i need to be..americana at is best, from the very old stuff to the new, hes the man..Cheers to all of you get a laugh from Tom, and cheers also to those who he makes tear up..
If I ever get something in my eye and am too much of a wimp to get it out the conventional ways, I put on this track and by the last two verses, the tears are streaming down my cheeks and the grit has gone.
Tom has a song for every mood - this is his best.
I lived in this kind of town...my father owned the drugstore and this song plants me on the steps of that drugstore every time I hear it...God I miss being young.
One of the greatest and most beautiful songs ever written. From a musical shaman that all too often overlooked. I'm not sure how, but I know if you rearrange the letters in his name, it spells GOD.
@MrByaeger I too am that same tough old fucker. I too am reduced to tears-don't you marvel that this man has the gift and power to create something and move you in that way. Some time ago my better half asked me about my favourite music for my funeral (hopefully a few years away)!. I had no definitive list of 3. Revisiting this, this evening I now have one of them, not because of its arrangement but because the song transports me to childhood and happy but sometimes poignant memories.
I heard this recently on a legendary Irish DJs programme (Gerry Ryan RIP), well done Gerry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! great to hear a man trying to put across the love of the ould special great songs.
A song that is as wonderful as a wonderful thing can be, the video isn't good. View the live version that Tom did for the BBC, it's everthying as good as a good song gets..
it's definitely the overwhelming sense of youthful nostalgia he skillfully captured that get me every time. i think many of us can relate to a lot of the things he remembers. when the strings swell in toward the end, i am reduced to a puddle of mush. i guess we all need that from time to time. thx tom.
Tom Waits' songs are just pure, raw emotions...his voice is beautiful in its imperfection and coarseness. Beautiful music, Tom. He's one of my favourite artists.
This song, as I understood, is about home and childhood...it made me cry, so sad and full of the irreplaceability of home and irretrievability of memories...
What a video. Most moving song I know. Thanks so much. Made my day.

"drunk or sober"
I know what you mean.
I know what you mean about "americana" as well.
But Tom Waits scope goes far beyond america.

Absolute heart-grabbing:
"I'll steal a hacksaw from my dad and cut the braces off your legs
and we'll bury them tonight out in the cornfield
just put a church key in your pocket we'll hop that freight train in the hall
we'll slide all the way down the drain to New Orleans in the fall"
