I am fluent in Spanish like many here and I have to agree that I don't understand the Spanish from Mexico. I mean it sounds Spanish, but either the words don't make sense or I just have no idea what they mean.

it's not a question of latin spanish or european spanish; in general, as the verb indicates the person it's not necessary to say "yo", "tú"... It is redundant and if you use them too much, it would be as if you were saying single sentences (it doesn't sound fluid). Normally we only say the subject once, and the rest of the entire conversation we refer to it through the verbs, only using pronouns when we want to put emphasis in the subject again. So most of the time you won't heard them.
White guy? You do know that Spanish is a European language, and the original speakers are from Spain, which are white, so to say that Spanish is not a white peoples language is stupid. Latinos are not the only people that speak Spanish as their first language you knowand European Spanish is proper Spanish, just like British English is proper English. The teacher is from Spain, not Latin America.
True, but they're pretty similar to Spanish. Besides, I was being sarcastic since everyone was just criticizing non-castilian dialects of Spanish. And as far as English influences in Latin American Spanish, the same thing happens to the Spanish in the Iberian Peninsula; where speakers sometimes replace Catalan words for Spanish words (I think it sounds nice).

English has its origins in "Anglo-Frisian and Old Saxon dialects brought to Britain by Germanic settlers" (Wikipedia, 2010); and Spanish is a "Romance language in the Ibero-Romance group that evolved from several dialects and languages in the northern fringes of the Iberian Peninsula" (IBID). As you can see, both languages are not pure or "proper". They are a mixture of ancient languages, and the will continue to evolve. Best regards!

I think the correct way to say "My name is Sergio" is "Mi nombre es Sergio" or perhaps "Soy Sergio" which means "I am Sergio". You can't say "Yo" if you're planning to use "me" such as what follows: "Yo me llamo Sergio", since "yo" already indicates you're talking about yourself. "Me" also refers to yourself so no need to repeat it. When translated to English: "I call myself Sergio". So it sounds ridiculous.
"I call myself Sergio" is translated "Yo me llamo a mí mismo Sergio". Now, normally when speaking we don't include "Yo" because the verb form ("llamo") indicates de person allready (not the word "me"), but the sentence "Yo me llamo Sergio" is completely corret in Spanish. Of course, as you said the direct translation of "My name is Sergio" is "Mi nombre es Sergio", but as "Yo me llamo Sergio" doesn't have a direct translation to English, the same sentence can be used.
"Vos" came from Spain too, but it's a old word (like "thy" in english). Mexican accent does not declare the "Z", as other accents that don't use some verbal times.. So classical spanish is a good choice.

llamo still means call for both but the order of the words gives it different meaning. in spanish i would be incorrent to say, "yo llamo me sergio" because that means..
i'm calling me sergio, which is terrible grammer. thats why to learn you have to read a spanish newspaper or books to get a feel for how the language is used right.
I'd recommend that non-native speakers stop giving lessons of Spanish, because the only thing you do is to confuse people. "Yo me llamo Sergio" and "Me llamo Sergio" are both perfectly correct, and they are the best way to express "My name is Sergio". You cannot just translate word by word because that just doesn't work.
In Spanish, personal pronouns indicating the subject are optional, because the subject is implicit in the verbal form. Either way will always be correct.
My spanish teacher who is from Mexico taught us this way, and didn't talk about the optional Yo, as not to confuse us the first day. I think this video is well done.
Is there that big a difference between Mexian spanish and other types? Plus, if they're American, chances are Mexican spanish might be more useful than castillian.
Beleave me. In Spain we do not understand what they say. Just look the way mexicans write in this post: half the words are invented. Some mexicans documentary films are subtitled.
I don't understand why, but to me the Mexican spanish is so easy, and Spanish from Spain is totally different, and much harder to understand. Not to say it isn't more "proper" since it IS the original. But it's odd since I'm fluent in Portuguese from Portugal.

Filipino is the national language, they have a strong accent when speaking English, nothing like the more fluent accents that you hear in the UK, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, and the United States.
The 1987 Constitution of the Republic of the Philippines states in Section 6 "The national language of the Philippines is Filipino." Also, I advise you to read Section 7 of the Constitution.
Oskis, have you been to Mexico? Every Mexican state is different. I'm sure that all over Spain it is different too. The Conquistadors took the language to Mexico. Mexico has more Spanish speakers than any other country thanks to Spain. I'm Mexican and I understand Spaniards perfectly. Hola topaztrex, I'm American but studied Spanish over 10yr and have many Latam friends so might try to offer an opinion. The dropping of s is a sort of regionalism for particular accents of Spanish. Another is pronouncing "y" (yo) and even "ll" (llegar) sort of like French "j" (je) - I think either Cuban or P.Rican do that. In Japanese, they have something like this - Western Jpn tend to change "d" of the verbal copula "da" to "ya". Best if you travel to the country and take it in naturally.

Sí se le llama español por que de hecho los colonizadores CASTELLANOS(de España) fueron los que ocuparon el territorio. yo me llamo sergio = i call myself sergio
llamo still means call for both but the order of the words gives it different meaning. in spanish i would be incorrent to say, "yo llamo me sergio" because that means..
i'm calling me sergio, which is terrible grammer. thats why to learn you have to read a spanish newspaper or books to get a feel for how the language is used right.

I'd recommend that non-native speakers stop giving lessons of Spanish, because the only thing you do is to confuse people. "Yo me llamo Sergio" and "Me llamo Sergio" are both perfectly correct, and they are the best way to express "My name is Sergio". You cannot just translate word by word because that just doesn't work.
In Spanish, personal pronouns indicating the subject are optional, because the subject is implicit in the verbal form. Either way will always be correct.

My spanish teacher who is from Mexico taught us this way, and didn't talk about the optional Yo, as not to confuse us the first day. I think this video is well done.

Beleave me. In Spain we do not understand what they say. Just look the way mexicans write in this post: half the words are invented. Some mexicans documentary films are subtitled.

I don't understand why, but to me the Mexican spanish is so easy, and Spanish from Spain is totally different, and much harder to understand. Not to say it isn't more "proper" since it IS the original. But it's odd since I'm fluent in Portuguese from Portugal.

Filipino is the national language, they have a strong accent when speaking English, nothing like the more fluent accents that you hear in the UK, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, and the United States.

Oskis, have you been to Mexico? Every Mexican state is different. I'm sure that all over Spain it is different too. The Conquistadors took the language to Mexico. Mexico has more Spanish speakers than any other country thanks to Spain. I'm Mexican and I understand Spaniards perfectly. Teachers in Mexico teach the proper way, it's the general population that don't speak it properly. I have many friends from Spain and we have no problem!!

El acento de Madrid es perfectamente reconocible frente al de Valladolid. Tampoco se puede decir que el andaluz sea más "evolucionado" que el castellano.
Después de 1492 el dialecto castellano de Toledo se convirtió en el estándar escrito y educativo en España, aun cuando permanecieron varios dialectos hablados - entre ellos, el andaluz.
Tampoco existe un "acento sudamericano" ni tampoco un estándar único para Latinoamérica -a Dios gracias.

Look at the typically mexican writing. "OVIO" is an invented word, may be "Obvio"?; "QUANDO" instead of "Cuando", "ESPANOL", instead of "Español", "AY" instead of "Hay"... 19 words, 4 faults, 20% errors.

It said Spanish and Castilian said since the two forms are acceptable. It is more known in Spanish America and Spain is known of the two ways although this now fashionable to call him only "Castellano" and the Real Academia de la Lengua Spanish support them equally. While modern Spanish comes from the old Castilian what is more correct to call my Spanish to what today we speak Spanish. Se puede decir español y se puede decir castellano pues las dos formas son aceptables. Es mas llamado español en america y en españa es llamado de las dos maneras aunque ahora esta de moda llamarse solo "castellano" y la Real ACademia Española de la Lengua los admite por igual. Si bien el español moderno viene del castellano antiguo lo mas correcto para mi es llamar español a lo que hoy hablamos pero es un opinion personal.

umm.. i've heard a spanish rapper called tote king dropping the /s/ in most words, for example mentiras he spelled it mentira.
is that a form of spanish in spain? could somebody explain?

Hola topaztrex, I'm American but studied Spanish over 10yr and have many Latam friends so might try to offer an opinion. The dropping of s is a sort of regionalism for particular accents of Spanish. Another is pronouncing "y" (yo) and even "ll" (llegar) sort of like French "j" (je) - I think either Cuban or P.Rican do that. In Japanese, they have something like this - Western Jpn tend to change "d" of the verbal copula "da" to "ya". Best if you travel to the country and take it in naturally.

Sí se le llama español por que de hecho los colonizadores CASTELLANOS(de España) fueron los que ocuparon el territorio. Si te das cuenta se conservan algunos modismos propios de la edad media (Cosa que me encanta) De hecho creo que no es correcto decir que se habla castellano sino Español o en todo caso.. dialecto del Castellano. Es algo confuso y habrá miles y miles de opiniones. A mi parecer el castellano más correcto siempre será el de Castilla. Saludos =)

es incorrecto decir que el español hablado en madrid y valladolid es el mas correcto, es un acento mas, no creo que se pueda decir con claridad que acento es el correcto.. igual es el acento sudamericano, hablado por mas de 100 millones de personas, o igual es el andaluz, que es uno de los acentos mas evolucionados.

¿¿y que está diciendo?? que la H no se pronuncia. y sí, no se pronuncia, pero un poco equivocados la pronunciamos como "gÜ...".
PERO COÑO, NO SE PRONUNCIA. a,por cierto , es LA H, no EL H. y se dice: " tus ejemplos son INCORRECTOS" . "errados" no se utiliza mucho, es más correcto "incorrecto"

dorisvi: es cierto que debí haber matizado que asi lo decimos en España y que son excepciones las palabras que puse (aqui en España). Por otro lado me molesta el tonito redicho de tu comentario. Si vas a corregir a alguien al menos no cometas errores como los que menciona tiyui porque quedas bastante mal. Por último no te bases en mi pronunciación para decir si hablo español bien o mal porque es obvio que entre tú y yo habrá diferencias. No seas egocéntric@.

si mi comentario fué un poco duro ,disculpa; Es cierto que me equivoqué cuando escribí "el H".Aprovecho para dar la explicación: todas las letras son femeninas porque se dice una letra, por lo tanto se dice la H,(cuando me equivoco no me dà vergûenza porque nadie es perfecto, y eso le puede ocurrir a todo el mundo; En cuanto a errado que viene de error, si en España quizàs no se use mucho, segùn ustedes , no deja de ser un sinónimo y si se usa en otros paises de habla castellana.

Es solo un comentario, a mi me encanta el ceceo español y seguro quienes lo inventaron lo manejan bien, pero el ceceo puede ser muy confuso, incluyo para otro hispano hablante. PERO QUE BUENO QUE ALGUIEN SE PREOCUPA POR ENSEÑAR EL MAS BELLO IDIOMA. Felicidades

Bueno, pronunciamos una C cuando hay C o una Z y una S cuando hay una S ¿cual es el problema? En ciertas partas de Andalucía, donde se practica el real ceceo, siempre se pronucia una C, incluso donde viene una S, y en otras partes de Andalucía al igual que en Hispanoamérica se practica el seseo, es decir siempre pronuncian una S inculso donde viene una C o una Z....saludos.
