@grimsurvivor They are radar guided, They swirl to capture the targets radar profile from many angles and ensure a more accurate hit. The missile also can be programed to use radar to guide itself down a cave or tunnel. as you can see later in the movie.
keep in mind, this is the first real battle these soldiers have ever fought in...in fact, it's supposed to be the first real battle of the first space war humans have EVER fought-and they underestimated the bugs very badly. i'm suprised that i hadn't realized how dumb it was to not have any tanks. if i remember, in the original novel, this group was supposed to clear out a "safe" area for a "heavy weapons brigade" to land-but the "hwb" landed in the WRONG PLACE and were slaughtered!
If were just as aggressive, angry, and focused on doing anything for the sake of our own gain back than, and we still are now, what says we will change in 1000 years? Its taken us over 4000 years to get this far and were still the same in nature.
@DarkArtistKaiser Hella ironic that the original book was trying to make a perfect society rather than the total opposite that it's portrayed as in the movie.
I know, I read about that. What I want to see in the future though is how a military based society like this crumbles at its seams. The term "He who lives by the sword dies by the sword" has been more true than some people believe.
@DarkArtistKaiser I think the book is a better depiction of the future. Modern soldiers are better equipped than the MI in the movie. In the book they wear powersuits with wrist-mounted flamethrowers and atomic missle launchers.
@DarkArtistKaiser That a cynic's way of looking at it. Civilians are Citizens that have less say in governmental affairs, such as voting. Society seems to run decently well in Starship Troopers, minus the bug meteorites.
So did Nazi Germany. Sure it looks like runs smooth, but don't think that the reason for why is either ethical or moral.
The thing is, they have to serve in the military to vote. That basically means that they are treated subhuman until they "prove their worth." They are dying so they can vote, for a government that is a military dictatorship(Which I am sure much of history will show is never democratic) and using them like cannon fodder.
@DarkArtistKaiser A government that requires its populace to serve in the military in order to vote would be immoral and unethical nowadays because it would be a war against other human nations. In Starship Troopers, while it may not be a morally sanctioned approach, I think it's feasible and logical in a Species vs. Species conflict. I take the concept of a world after democracies have failed with a grain of salt. It's Science Fiction afterall.
Best sci-fi battle scene in a film EVER. Seriously, the Star Wars battles are just crappy CGI simulations. Atleast this one used a lot of extras for the battles rather than just have CGI.
Oh i forgot to mention. This is the future and they are still using flares? A Night battle with no Night vision equipments? Total epic failure from the start.
@Big5000K Errr. Are you saying that during the 90's the makers of this film didn't or could not possibly thought about tanks and Night Vision goggles? As far as I know. Tanks are used since, well I don't know. World War I and the first use of NVG's is during World War II.
So I'm pretty sure the makers of this film has knowledge of those simple military equipments.
@warnation101 Eh, I said that wrong. I meant that they would have no way of telling how tech would advance, if they had tanks then I doubt they would know how to transport them. Also, if they used all that it would ruin the purpose of the scene.
@Big5000K The book had Klendathu being a screwup with infantry in powered armor. Verhoeven hated the book, which is why we have idiotic scenes like this whole sequence. Apparently in the future, we bloody forgot everything we've learned about warfare since WW1, and we decided the whole nightvision gear, grenade launchers and crap you could find on soldiers in 2003 was too futuristic for whenever the hell this movie's set in.
@SullyMediaProduction Um, Robert Heinlein, you know, the author of the ST universe. In fact there were 3-4 world wars in it. It was a fun sequence, but it was still stupid. Verhoeven wanted it to be stupid, the movie's a stealth satire of fascism, it wouldn't be good if the space nazis started being reasonable and winning.
Ah the beauty of satire. Of course their tactics are shit, and their training is a joke, and they are poorly equiped. Of course they get owned and of course the ycan't aim down their non existing sights (cause their rifles have none). Quiet a few people missed the point on this battle scenen and overall movie.
lol 1 soldier die and everyone is running like scared little kids and they supposed to be soldiers in the future xD they cant aim for shit and wtf they only shot 1 bug if the bug is killing one of them otherwise they yust run
we send 5 or 6 tanks in there and they would probably get overun, idk why they even sent in troops, we would just have to sit there and blast them repeatedly with bombs from planes.
Judging from the fact these bugs have bullet proof exoskeletons, you'd think we be sending Soldiers with more high caliber ammunition or even try using anti-vehicle weapons on them
@alexiaNBC They don't have bullet proof exoskeletons they just have distributed nervous systems which makes it hard for them to take them down. You blow a leg off or or claw they shrug it off and keep coming either because you just took out ONE nervous system or they don't care because they are just a hive mind that listens to orders. The Real Problem is they should have been using explosive tip casing like the Pulse Rifle fires in Aliens, which would blow their limbs off after a few bullets.
I've been reading all these comments and its really pathetic. i loved this movie when i was a kid and still do. ok so theres no plasma guns or amazing armor? who cares this was one of the best movies of its time with some of the most amazing visual effects of its time. And i seen a comment on why are they still using bullets? that would be so retarted if they didn't use bullets humans=bullets aliens = plasma lol. this is original thats why its such a good movie read the book first then talk.
Damn, their military tactics sucks. Infantry without any kind of support assault giant bugs and get cut to shreds. One would think that just sending in tanks would have been a better idea :P
@Juzz92 one would think on d-day you could just bomb them too right? but thats the infantrys job sacrifice. and like the captain says in the ship "were first wave" first wave usually doesn't have support because they don't know what there up against or what the enemys capabilities are. and with those plasma cannon things shootin down all there ships that would be a waste of tanks cause they would get shot down in the air
Also, USE THE FRIGGING UNDERBARREL SHOTGUN! Rico uses it ONCE in the entire movie and it is insanely effective, it just tears them apart. Its one of the only things that bothers me the entire way through the movie, im just screaming at the screen "JUST USE THE FUCKING SHOTGUN!" there probably is some reason why they dont.
Oh sure its less effective at range, but the rifle appears to do barely anything to the bugs, there are also many situations where they are at extremely close range to the bugs and could have used it.
@Cloud6556 true but what would they do if they were out of range and switching takes time plus time to reload instead of just the general rapid fire and shock of auto mode
"remember your training..." yeah, the training that taught you how to shoot from the hip. good lord, the pilots and the scientists have a better aim than the soldiers!
Why the hell are all those comments about Star Wars on this video?
Star Wars had lame laser technology, too much geeky speech and the weirdest battle suits ever, this movie is much better for the realism of an army with guns with bullets, more realistic, with the real results of an ambush and most of it, no techy-speechy, no space laser battles and soldiers whose acts like soldiers, not robo-dancers who shoot, hide and shoot, and the force?, that's a joke, just hypnotic psychic weak powers.
to be honest, i dont see the point in wearing their combat vests. The bugs can just slice through like a needle on tissue paper. Its really just slowing them down.
this movie was so awesome when i saw it for the first time, but now that i look at it again why they will send only light infantry? no armor, no air support, no artilery, makes no sense....

Starship Troopers was based off a novel by the same name written by Robert A. Heinlein which you can find on Amazon.com plus a minatures/RPG game based on the movie
Ah fuck, I can imagine how it feels when that sharp beak slices through flesh and bone. When that soldier thought that the bug was dead, it made its last stand and hit the dude right in the leg! PAAAIIIN!
@12igon6 You fucking cocksucker. This is just a movie. You really think that there is a planet called "Clendathu" with huge bugs? -.- Oh my god, what the fck do u think if the creator of the movie just said "nuke the damn place" and detonates a hydrogenbomb, how long movie would it be? 5min? Idiot.
@Dereksilavong they probably do but this is just the infantry. Not the cavalry. Besides, they understimated bug defense capabilities so they think they can just shoot them down like live targes. Wrong.

snakes3425 1 year ago
@snakes3425 Then why didn't they make the same idea for the movie? It would have been far more interesting.

Starship Troopers was based off a novel by the same name written by Robert A. Heinlein which you can find on Amazon.com plus a minatures/RPG game based on the movie

So a race thats advance enough to have warships don't even have tanks
Dereksilavong 1 year ago
@Dereksilavong they probably do but this is just the infantry. Not the cavalry. Besides, they understimated bug defense capabilities so they think they can just shoot them down like live targes. Wrong.
