@antonsavin72 Hi, and Thanks for the kind words!! I was using a Roland Cube 60 (with just a bit of grit in the settings, not much tho). Great Guitar, Great amp. I also have a Benedetto Bravo and a custom hand-made Goodsell, but this was an easy combination and it sounded great. Bill
Hi 2cor518 - Yes, that is a Django Reinhardt song called "Nuages". I love it and never get tired of playing it. This was recorded a few years ago, and I plan to put up a more recent version with my Benedetto Bravo! I like how this turned out more than the version I also have up with my Saga Gitane D250 M because this tone is better. So glad you liked it. And Thanks AGAIN to all those who have left me such wonderful words! Bill
I'm really liking this guitar. I'm an intermediate player and a little on a budget. Would you recommend this guitar. Oh, and great Video! Love the jazzy tone!
@dugingers This is a great value. I paid 366 USD new w/no case. It is an Ibanez Artcore AF85VLS (VioLinStain). Standard everything, no replacements. All of my non-video MP3s were recorded with this and a Line 6 Pod w/ chip 2.2. ;-)
i have this exact guitar, but i got it used and wanted to know if you have any information on it regarding its build and any changes to make. really all i know is that it has humbuckers hah. im lovin it though. thanks
Nice feel and vibrato - and beautiful guitar, BTW - who the hell says there's no place for finger vibrato in jazz guitar? Well done. The birvatto - ops - vibrato, you can apply it even to whole chords like that D7-9, it may seem a little hard in the beginning, but it's a great effect. Cheers, mate, from Lisbon
Thanks for the observations! I like putting vibrato on the chords.. I just think it brings them alive a bit more. Hope to visit Lisbon one day... I hear it is beautiful.
.. it is a pleasure to see this tune played in "F" with chord voicings that sound right. I can also see very clearly what you are doing, which helps, given that there are so many abortive versions out there. Thanks Bill. I love the gypsy acoustic sound, but I prefer your electric version on this one. Regards.
Thanks for stopping by to check it out... I like the electric version better too. I am so glad you liked it. I was going for a real fluid and impressionistic sound.
For half a year now, I keep coming back to your version on YouTube. I like the sound of your recording, with an exceptionally good balance between the electric and acoustic sound of your guitar (I have the same guitar BTW) and I like the directness of your tone. Maybe the melody needs a bit more flow or 'groove', but that's all there is to desire. Kudos to you!
Thanks!! It is a great guitar. Best money I ever spent on a jazz box! Sounds great live or recorded, plays like butter... I don't really care what is on the headstock... Just so happens that Ibanez really nailed it with this design and the Artcore series. You won't be sorry. And if it gets lost, stolen or trashed, you can get another one without alot of heartache.
Hello Bill, What did you use to record this? what amp and how did you pick up the sound? thanks a lot for this great sounding song, both sound-wise and music-wise.
First of all thanks for stopping by. Glad you took a listen!
I used an Artcore AF85VLS - I either used a Roland Cube 60 or a Pod 2.2.
I used a Sony TRV330 Hi8Digital video camera, and probably put the Recording output from the amp directly into the audio input on the camera, or else I just let the stereo mics on the camera pick up the sound.
That is a most high compliment. Music when performed should be comfortable. It should look and sound effortless. I believe one should be at home with the tune and truly own it to play it from the heart.
I had a AF95 VLS last month. There was an annoying undiscoverable rattle, and I had to schlep it back to the shop twice, the second time insisting on an alternative. I got a AS103 NT, which is fun to play. I think my neighbours may not appreciate my hours of noodling, etc, but it does play beautifully. Won't feedback like a AF model, though.
Thank you very much for the upload! I would really like like to add acquire a hollowbody sometime in the future for more mellow jazzy tones. I've been looking at these, and couldn't believe they would sound that great for the price. But that guitar (and your playing) sounded simply beautiful to my ears. I'll be sure to try one of these bad boys out this week, =D.
Thanks! Glad you liked it. I have a few more to post yet... Ibanez just nailed it on these Artcore guitars. I paid $365 + tax new for it. AF85VLS1. I used it this past weekend in a Jazz Festival. My Eastman was good, but I needed a bit more volume than finesse... the Ibanez also works well when I need to rough it up a bit. It has the ability to be very mellow and to cut through with a real sweet grind.
Just going to add that I've been through YouTube looking at lots of performances of this tune and it seems very few people can get it right. You're one of the ones that can. Keep it up.
I listened to it from 1970 until 1995, when I finally believed I had enough chops to try Gypsy Jazz. I just never thought I could play it.....until I tried. I tried to bring as much authenticity to it as possible. Thank you so much.
I would think so... the AF85 has a different veneer and snazzier inlays, but I think everything else should be the same... my guess... for the money, they can't be beat... I sometimes prefer it to my Eastman
Thank you very much! I recently got an Eastman AR804CE - an Oval hole Archtop with a single cutaway, floating neck and floating pickup. I believe to tone on this is far better than the Eastman F-Hole Models. AND there are not that many of them around. Very nice guitar.
I plan to record with it very soon! Please stay tuned! Also some new tunes are coming soon.
very nice performance! I have a Ibanez AF85 myself and I would like to play this as well... do you have the sheet music of Nuages or do you know where I could find it? I think the version you have is very nice!
Wow that was really nice. My whole family plays pro here in New Orleans, and my uncle recently started using Artcore's. This tone you have is smooth and full.
Man,you sound great with your guitar? Was the guitar amplified or not?

Awesome! Do you use any special strings? What settings onthe guitar do you use?
CreativeFilmMaker 4 years ago
I use flatwound 12's.
I used the neck pickup with about 1/2 the tone rolled back - Volume set on about 8.
The Roland Cube 60 amp was likely on the "Lead" setting with the gain around 1:45/2:00 and the "Volume" set to around 10 or 10:30
Thanks for your comments, and asking!

I heard once in my life that jazz guitarists use flat 12 gauge strings. is that so???
dudebjj 4 years ago
Well, that is exactly what I use on the Artcore. Thomastik flatwound 12's. I have an Eastman on which I use Roundwound 12's.
bfulbright 4 years ago
i'm kinda bad (been playing 3 months, can only play simple blues/jazz songs in A/E maj such as "Gentle Rain"), and I use roundwound 13's
I'm eager to change back to the standard strings... thick strings are only good for practice.
