This is the last scene that Ellis is lucid in. I feel sorry for Meredith because the last time they spoke while she was lucid they were fighting and when she tries to reconcile with her mother, her lucidity is gone.
Is something cut from this? I could swear that someone said something about 'we could walk around naked' and it seemed kind of out of place... anybody else? Anybody?
I don't get Ellis she was nice to Cristina, and to Richard, but all she did was criticized Meredith and call her ordinary. Ellis was lucid for the first time in what years. Couldn't she had use her lucidity to be nice to her daughter for god sake, instead of wasting it disapproving of Meredith. I love Ellis but I want to beat the crap out of her, just because she was mean to Meredith for no reason.
This scene is so sad and so wonderful in the same time. Meredith's life would be so different if Richard chose Ellis instead of Adele. Mer would have had a father growing up, a mom who will be there not the cold Ellis without feelings and a couple of siblings.
This is such a sad scene. When they talk about getting Mer a couple siblings, it makes me think how different she would be had Richard had left Adele. She would've had a father-figure, her mother wouldn't have been so nasty, she would have had siblings...it's all very sad.
Also, can't help but think about the Ellis/Cristina mirroring they do...they make you think Cristina is going to be the one that has to choose between surgery and a life. But she'll find she can do both...with Owen :)
I think this is one of the most saddest scenes in Grey's, because Ellis is a woman still wounded by the past, even when she knows she has bigger things to worry about.
Everyone wishes they could "go back" and "do everything so differently".
But what is so touching is how Richard gives Ellis the one (and only) thing he could give her: the fantasy of a reality that could have been. And I think it was the best memory she could cling on to before receding back into her Alzheimer's.
I wish they could have had a second chance they would have been so amazing together. Why did he have to pick Adele over her? It's not fair!!! I want Ellis BACK!
I remember the first time I saw this scene I was in fits of sobbing. It's so unbelievably sad. Whatever about any crap between Meredith and Derek, they have years left together, but Richard and Ellis never had those years together. I cry again every time I watch this scene. It's so perfectly scripted and subtly acted
i totally agree with you. no matter how many times i see this scene it breaks my heart on so many levels. it is the classic "what if" scene and conversation of what might have been. i think it resonates because we probably all have a path not taken moment in our lives that haunts us.
am so glad you posted this. i have been looking for this scene for a long time. absolutely love it. brings tears to my eyes every time i see it. thanks again!

Screw Adele and Addison. Richard and Ellis belonged together just like Derek and Meredith belong together.

Richard and Ellis seem like Derek and Meredith.

wasn't there more about saying they miss the kids but they're secretly glad they're gone because they can run around naked?
