these cars are geared to rip around at an easy 200+ kph on the highway, not zip to 100 as fast as possible although you can feel the torque. i used to have a euro spec 500SEC and it loved being out on the highway
Off topic: I've never seen this type of cluster meters from an old Merc. This is one rare cluster meter. You know'....the RPM meters usually on the left..but this one's on the right top hand!
Great car indeed. It´s a pity that nowadays these cars are often falling into the hands of hooligans, gipsies and speed fiends who ruin the cars soon after buying them....it´s a shame!
At the age of only twenty this may sound silly from me. But i totally agree, when this kind of cars come available to the lower minded they all end up at the dump sooner or later. Real shame.
@kwambartie i am 20 and i was given one to me by my uncle coz i cnt afford to buy it as i m just a student.but i havent ruined it i only drive it on nice sunny days and keep it in the garage at my parents house.its well looked after but i know wot u mean.all i am saying is all young drivers are not the same
They are solid as a brick, although mine has a pampered life. How many 20+ years BMW, Jags or any other of MB's competitors are still in daily use? OK, even a MB won't last forever if you don't care about them then and there, but which cars last longer than the ones from the inventor of automobiles?
The tach is on the upper left, because my car has the factory fitted trip computer. It was an option for all the '83-on 380/420/500/560SEC in Euro-LHD spec. Rare gadget...
Well, Mb are the oficially oldest manufacturer. They have now been damages by there american accountants!
These sec's were made like tanks and maybe too well! Honda built the CRX back in the 80's and my Uncle cowned it for 16 years and now I have it!! It has grown moss on it in the past and ALWAYS has started!. Merc and Honda from these days are the best!
Easy answer, Volvo. They don't cost a small fortune to keep running over a long period of time like an MB. I'm talking about older ones like your SL. Why does it take your V8 powered $70k German sports car 9 sec to get to 60mph? Now I'm all kinds of curious how slow the 6cyl model is. No wonder they had to put a massive 12cyl in this thing. I'm being hateful because I'm disappointed with how slow it is considering it's an expensive sports car. I've always loved these older SLs. My dream car!
Ever hear of a heavy car? Guess not these cars weigh about 2 tons, even 300hp isn't an awful lot to pull it. Also the gearing in the automatic transmission make it even more sluggish
So let me get this straight. It's overweight and isn't geared for performance? What is this thing supposed to be then? I was always under the impression it was a pure sports car. How can you call it anything else when it's offered with a V12? Gimme a break! I would expect more from a car reaching 6-digit prices from a company who is supposed to be tops in engineering.
it's a luxury gt car. A pure sports car comes with a manual transmission and is lightweight. So a v12? jaguars come with v12's and they are huge land yachts.
and i was talking to you about the sl and the only sl v12 was the sl600. and the sl600 does 0-60 in 6 seconds so thats pretty quick. both cars weigh over 2 tons
@C126driver Very rare indeed the W124 500E was also equipment in that stuff, for ALL users and Mercedes fans! this is not home tuning or something like that. Luxury Mercs (usually with larger engines) came with this trip, very rare and expensive gadget you even got instantaneous combustion very nice gadget for the 80's
@C126driver Trip computer is RARE indeed, have never seen one in real life, and even on mobile . de i find them 1 or 2 a month if i search alot. :S Cool though, i envy you :)
About 7.8seconds,...0-60 MPH. For such a heavy solid car that is pretty great. These cars have so much torque. Top speed is very impressive,...have you found it out? Be careful thou huh!
I drive an old 1984 sec 500 and I just drove it on the German Autobahn to top speed which was 240 kmh, which actually is 150 mph. For such an old heavy coupe still good.
You should make a video to show the functions of the bordcomputer. I have seen very few 126 with this.

About the same speed as the '90 500SL. 0-60 in 9 point slow seconds. Nice car though!

I forgot to add, it has about as much take-off response as my '87 300E. In other words, none.

I misread the title and thought this was a 560SL. Yep, the 560SEC I'd call a grand touring coupe. But 13mpg and 0-60 in 9sec. PASS! lol

What does the 560SL do 0-60mph? If it's engineered properly to match it's image, it should still be fast enough.
