Thank you so much for this! Have loved the FIXX since the beginning. Seen them many times starting with the Phantoms tour. Cy is a criminally overlooked singer/lyricist. Dan Brown was a big bass influence for me with his tasteful use of empty space, cool rhythms, and fretless work. Funny to see Jamie with that Ibanez instead of his usual "Brownie". I bought the exact same guitar in 1983! Rupert was very innovative and a major influence as well on my synth work.
Wow! ...one of the few studio tracks that sounds 10x better live! ...very deep song and simple yet complex. There's no other band like the FIXX. ...so talented. ...saw them live around 1992/93, and they were amazing. ...talked to them in the parking lot for about an hour before the show. ...really friendly and down to earth. I remember the singer doesn't drink, which is probably partly why it looked like he hadn't aged at all since the 80s.
I agree with briagh. The fixx and big country which I was fortunate to have both seen live in 83-84 were consisdered one hit wonders but their albums offered so much more. I love Youtube !
briagh. I appreciated your words about one of the most important bands the world has, unfortunately, never known. "The Fixx's genius is totally ignored by the popular music cultures. Impeccable vocals, rich melodies, layered harmonics.... and the lyrics actually have meaning. Today's supposed music has no character or meaning, its all just dreck" Well said and well met.
Like my other two faves, (a-ha and Big Country) The Fixx's genius is totally ignored by the popular music cultures. Impecable vocals, rich melodies, layered harmonics.... and the lyrics actually have meaning. Today's supposed music has no character or meaning, its all just dreck!!!
One of the most cogent comments that I've seen on YT in recent months. Pertinent words that you've penned there my friend. I love BC and A-ha as well. Don't forget Talk Talk and Saga too.
One must truly have an ear for remarkable music to appreciate the subtle nuances and unparalled genius this band offers to the world. You my friend, have nailed it. They are unlike any other band. SPOT ON!
@pailhook Reach the Beach is one of those albums that will stand the test of time. I played that cassette to death when I was a teen. I still have that same cassette.
excellent point. Past tense used was incorrect great work lives on. The shame is the lack of video archive footage this seems to be it other than 80s vids.
I didn't here this until 1998 but I love it. I do remember back in 1981 I heard red skies and was hooked. I believe this band was lyrically ahead of their time.
I recall being 16 years old, cruising around town late at night in my brother's Ford Grenada. Me in the back seat, my older bros in the front...getting stoned to this song. Good times.
One of my favorite Fixx songs ever.Play the album version really loud, it just jumps of record. gives me goosebumps.Jamie West Oram is the man.Great band.Still doin it too.
A solid band with a hard rock edge that started but stayed ahead of the pack as far as New Wave music. They still tour and are an amazing live show. Saw them in 05 and they still KICK ASS....Go see them and buy their Cds....
Does anyone know what Jamie's set up is? What effects and amp does he use to get that crisp clean sound? I see from his toggle switch that he is using the bridge pick-up.
