Thus the soul's not real because it's supernatural, and miracles aren't found in such spiritual revelations, but in nature. The soul is not a soul, you call it that when really you're mistaking a mental illness or feeling for a spirit, and to possess such a thing is evil, because to bless what you call a soul and to believe it exists puts pain in your chest, and misfortune and great suffering will come for such a mental illness of being washed and watered down by what's supposedly supernatural!!
There ain't such thing as a soul, it's irrational and absurd to believe in such a misconception. The soul is part of religions which are unknown, to not be clear on an existence its expert can't understand is but an obscure and dubious notion, a belief taken by someone who doesn't realise they said nothing about gods or souls, they might be made up, people make things up, and it's highly possible that similar realities to this might be more realistic. All in all, only the miracl of nature's real
Whether Arthur was a pessimist is important to know for anyone who wants to be a pessimist. I say it's wise, I totally agree with the anti-concept of life (there's no such thing as life) explained as the will, and that destroying the will, not life (not ceasing activity through the grave), will lead to happiness. I also heard of waking up in the morning to contemplate on the bad things that happened in ur life for future action, and of not aiming for success or luck; having a skull, & sad songs.
Do you know that Christianity is correct? The world around us reveals that G-d DOES exist, and the historical evidence reveals that Jesus Christ really did come to this earth and there is overwhelming evidence that Jesus Christ really did physically rise from the dead. Jesus is coming again and the signs of the end times that were foretold in the Bible are coming to pass.
Arthur Schopenhauer came up with Einstein's space-time ontology 50 years before Albert even was born! You can watch Robert Lanza on You Tube, were he's talking about space and time; that's Schopenhauers idea too! Schop was more than a stuffy pessimist. The pessimism is secondary to his metaphysics you see.
It is possible that Schopenhauer is the greatest philosopher ever. His philosophy isn't illusion. He corrected Kant, corrected and jumped over Hegel and finally he introduced "will". Although, each of us, Schopenhauer's fans, can cast aside his pessimism and choose optimism. We can choose that without hurting essence of his philosophy. Schopenhauer is great in many things.
ie. Happiness true happiness comes from the inside, from the soul: the peace at heart and stillness of mind in knowing that this is passing, but that the world to come for each is not passing. As Sting stated in a song, "We are all spirits temporarily residing in a material world." or Wyane Dyer who said, "We are all infinite beings sharing a temporary earhtly experience; learn to find that within yourself."
I do not think that Shop nor Neitzsche nor any of these gusy were really atheist. I think they were onto something which Christ himself advocated, but that man, with his greed and avarice, over centuries has obscured and perverted. Namely, that earhtly attainments, outside of a sturdy sincere realtionship with the spiritual, are futile for they pass away and literally amount to nothing. A check and circumspection of the earhtly will for a strong and unstinted desire and will for the spiritual.
dont think they were really atheists? well they werent materialists thats true, but atheists definitely. its obvious from reading them. Although unlike nietzsche, schopenhauer had an admiration for the christian and buddhist messages although rejected the dogma
"I have seen my moments of greatness in a flicker; I have seen the eternal footman take my coat and snicker." T. S. Eliot. It is all fleeting---greatness, hopes and desires attained, or unattained hopes and desires. Everything under the sun is transitory. The mindset of thinking that the more you gain, be it material items or social status or etc., will place you on a level or platuea that is immuned to common human suffering is the cause of vexation of spirit and unhappiness.
'will to live aimlessly and reproduce' - love that one. People reproduce for all the wrong reasons blindly and aimlessly... They bring children to this world while they themseves are children. They want to be sheep in a herd, not to stick out, so they chase anyone, a partner often out of despair and set up family. They think that they 'give' life and secure themselves from loneliness of their own beings. But they never will. They run from themselves and often live selfish, aimless wasted lives.
if you change what you want (your will) to something that you can attain you can be happy. thats what makes him a pessimist and also allows for happiness. thats my take on this.
@montysmithtyler I dont think you quite get it... the will is not something we want... the Will is like, our whole "being", it´s not something you can change, for Schops. But he never said we cannot achieve some goals of "happiness", he said only that this are very ephemeral and little moments in life, that´s all.
@yupiie well ithink he did think we could change our will as he did try and reconcile free will despite believing in causality. he always talked about the denial of the will and aspired to eastern religions such as buddhism and hinduism because of their denial of the will.ur talking about the will in itself which he and kant believed to be unchanging but i said change what we want refering to desires sorry. the will initself is the decision maker reasons behind decisions can change
I totally dig his concept of the Will. Then of course is the mater of time and space that is relative so the transition of the Will from on object to another does not exist because time can be 0 and space can be 0 also.
Like, maybe what he says depresses people, but Schopenhauer is actually like, you can still be happy, but you must try and abstain from the demands of the "Will" like food, sex, etc
I guess the reason why bobdy asks is that he realises a pessimism as something bad, that inhibits life. But, the reality is that His philosophical pessimism is much more different from a general point of view.
@bobdy9988 Pessimist is just a term. Labels should not stop us from contemplating Schopenhauer's philosophy. I could call him, for instance, and with proof of this, a misogynist for all he had to say about women, yet I believed he spoke only the truth about them. Was he a misogynist or not? or a pessimist? who cares? Only the truth should be of concern. BTW, only those whose intellect is poor find Schopenhauer depressing! :)
I love Schopenhauer. He thought women were as self-absorbed as I do. Perhpas you should check out my new video: What Men Know That Women Don't. Also the title of my book that I am trying to get translated in Portuguese right now.

@yupiie I think you mean ego as opposed to will.
Actually it is extremely unhealthy to live by the will. Will should only be
utilized for survival, literally.
Happiness is a by-product of following your bliss.....but, its ephemeral
because it's not a mental activity but rather a body activity.
I have another beef with Schopenhauer, he has very bad hair.
Bad hair is a physicist quality, a philosopher should
always wear a wig, just like Phil Spector, so he appears to
be 'orderly'.

hi!
My mother tongue is Portuguese, and we translate from German "Vorstellung" (here, Idea) by the word Representação (literally representation).
Does not you, English speakers, make differenciation between a representation (intuitive or abstract) and an idea (Plato's form, essence...)?
Thanks.
