First time I heard this song (although I have known GL's other songs for 40 years), it was when I first settled in Vancouver and moving my stuff around town in the torrential September rain. This song by GL came through the car radio. It shook me to the core and I broke into tears.
Obviously not from my neck of the woods; the wolves are usually found 'at the door'. We hope to see the loons this year but the Gulf Oil Spill has us a little concered. The bears are certainly plentiful; the people are tough!!
who the hel knows wat gord is doing on the guitar in this song !!!! i can play it but i can never make my guitar be in the right pitch its always too low, ive tried moving my capo up, tuning up and EVEN PLAYING IT ON MY 12 STRING ! I CANT FIGURE IT OUT IM GOING INSANE someone help me ! !!!
@1125112511251125 Gord is the consummate guitar picker and there is NOBODY, I repeat, NOBODY who can match his finger picking style. Just keep practising is what Gord would tell you. I know this for a fact because the man is a friend of mine and you're about the zillionth person who has said they can't play it like he can. That's what makes him special.
This was the B-side to the Canadian centennial song "Canada" on a single my father brought back (he was UK PRO for CN at the time), so this must first have seen light in 1967, unless this was a later CN promo.
What can you say? Not just a Canadian legend, a musical icon for all times. Everytime I hear his songs, it makes me smile, and I feel my foot tapping or my body swaying to the music. Music that wil stand the test of time, long after lots of junk music has been long gone and forgotten.
i met gordon at a concert he gave in evansville a few yrs ago and he was so kind and patient with me as i was struck deaf and dumb at meeting him,,lol,,i tried to tell him how much his music had meant to me over the years,,and i hope he understood,,
I have been listening to this everyday for the past 2 weeks...I must really like it...thank you anippygirl for posting this...love love Gordon Lightfoot. :)
I often forget, how often Gordie's songs reflected a part of my own life that I have forgotten...
wandering this great empty, possibly forgotten gigantic wasteland known as Canada....I've been to India and it's weird that there seems to be a common denominator in these two countries...but not. India is the Land Of God and C anada is the Land of Bankers methinks...Thanx Babe!
I have driven all over Canada from Cape Spear, NL to Beaver Creek, YT and on to the Alaskan border; from Inuvik, NT to Point Pelee, ON. Canada is not a wasteland. Cities like Toronto and Calgary are as modern as any in the US and more modern than London. The part of Canada between the US border and such cities as Edmonton, Quebec, and Halifax is hardly empty. It may appear empty in comparison with overpopulated India, but it compares with the central US.
@MichaelSinclaire Also India is not the Land of G-d. The religions in which G-d is worshipped are Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Most Indians are Hindus. The Hindu religion is polytheistic.
Gordon is the rare musician/singer that sees what others miss. Life is our OWN story, and Gordon shares his experiences through his voice and guitars. My inspiration!
@rayjr62 To me i think its more than jsut a canadian natl treasure, i think the world owes a debt of gratitude to him. lord knows i do. mr lightfoot inspired me to pick up the 12 string, and learn to play it
@rayjr62 Canadian treasure hell, hes a WORLD treasure, if mankind could open up their hearts/minds/ears to his music, genius, mankind would be far better off :). i say this as a lifelong fan
Songwriter extraordinaire. My mom was a lover of Lightfoot and so am I. I grew up hearing his voice and finding my way through the lyrics he wrote. I still do.
whatta great version of this classic you have here...it made my day finding this here...I watched GL play this in '67, I believe, from about 15 feet away and this sounds just like he did WAY back then. thanx a heap
The tunes on this particular album were apparenlty recorded live at La Cave in Cleveland,
OH on May 8, 1965 when Lightfoot still performed without backup musicians. I have this entire album,,there are a few other good ones on this as well! Thanks rattlunhum, I appreciate your wonderful comment! Where else did ya hear him live on this tune??? what did I miss....LOL!
Where I saw GL live was at a concert in a highschool in St Thomas On/Canada. ..might have been "66..and there were back-up musicans, a bass and a lead...and yes, you did miss a terrific experience..a magic night
Well, that explains all....I was only a year old at the time,,,and would my mum take me to see this...She would not have been in her right mind...take me there?, LMao..Sure, and Gord would have thrown the towl in and cancelled that event immediately., Everyone would have heard me over Gord...LOL!!
Well, mother is gonna here it from me....LOL! I bet she went to see him by herself!,,,, To get a great night out to see him. and not listen to me whine all night....LOL.....oh well, can't say I blame her..lmao!
@anippygirl Got to see him, and talk with him after a concert in knoxville tn a couple years back, it astounded me how humble the man is, we could talk like anyone could
I just love this song. Gordon Lightfoot is such a prolific and talented songwriter. First time I heard this song, it was a cover by George Hamilton IV, and at that time I had no idea GL actually wrote it. Great lyrics, great song!
@anippygirl hi..dont know if you will remember me (or why you should) but just sitting here listening to perhaps my favorite piece of music for the gadzillioneth time, and noticed you hadnt replied to a comment in a long time, and found the same under your trilogy post also, and suddenly felt the need to know that things were ok with you.
