This is shockingly complex to me! I was 3 or 4 when my family bought a VIC 20 and played games like radar rat race, apple panic and amok. I never knew the VIC could run games this complicated. Our VIC couldn't even run choplifter cartriges (something about the version of computer we owned). Perhaps I'll look into emulation and see what other gems I missed.
I've got a theory that the game's not really an RPG if there's no rodents to kill. Your's has giant mice, clearly it's shaping up to be an awesome cRPG then. ^__^
@cadorbolin If I can get a Vic20, I am so getting this game. I've played and beaten the computer and NES versions of Ultima III. This is certainly some top-notch software for the 28-year old computer.
@cadorbolin other than slower gameplay, does using basic particularly limit game mechanics (# of stats/commands/things)? and to what degree could that be aided by implementing just monochrome graphics? ... if you don't mind
@shrapnelenema actually, a quick trip to wiki's wizardry 1 page cleared that up. i only ask cause i'd love to see a roguelike for datassette but am too lazy to undertake it myself yet
@shrapnelenema Realms of Quest I was mostly in BASIC. Realms II is about 70% BASIC, 30% machine code. But the speed of the interface is very smooth in the 100% ML Realms III.
I don't think there is much of a speed difference in the number of colors that you use on the VIC-20, unless you plan on making fancy tinkering on the raster line which Realms III does not do.
Sweet! Kinda reminds me of "The Bard's Tale" a little.

Man I still can't believe this, this must be the most complex game ever done for the vic-20?
it makes me lust for a 32k ram expanssion so I can play it.

awesome. got any footage of the first two?

No, unfortunately not. They are OK games, but they were programmed mostly in BASIC. Realms III is 100% assembly language.

LOL is that Moonlight Sonata in the dungeon? I love it!
What's the music you use for the fight with the giant mouse? It sounds kind of familiar but I dunno
marinerzz1 2 years ago
The piece of music used during combat is Bach's "Toccata and Fugue".
cadorbolin 2 years ago
Here is the music listing for the game:
INTRO uses Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries"
START SCREEN uses Beethoven's 7th
CASTLE uses Bach's "Two Part Intervention"
TRAVEL MAP uses Bach's "Fugue 542"
DUNGEON uses Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata"
ENCOUNTER uses Bach's "Toccata and Fugue"
FINAL DUNGEON uses Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake"
