@theglobehopper actually, the scientists use this for a very clear cause. They used the virtual environment to explore the behavior of place neurons. Place neurons play a key role in mammals to determine their spatial location. They only fire during motion though. We do not have the tech to record from cells that are moving. The virtual environment allowed the cells to activate without actually moving so they could be studied. Research from this was published in Nature.
Either they do it to mice, or we dont learn anything. If you're going to be an "animal rights activist", you get to not benefit from all the technologies humanity has developed as a result of experiments involving animals.
the same way fighting a war isn't "cruelty to soldiers"
Голова мыши удерживается в неподвижном состоянии держателями, которые в свою очередь содержат зонды, проникающие глубоко в мозг и считывающий информацию, эта мышь скорее всего бегает последние минуты
I agree with those below. Animal cruelty is rarely justified and this IS DEFINITELY NOT further any cause. The 'scientists' here should be reclassified as animal tormentors and be reported to the authorities
@theglobehopper how is this animal cruelity? In what way are they abusing this mouse? Its running on it's own accord and is navigating though an artificial environment! It can choose not to run, but it chooses it. it becomes animal cruelty once they FORCE it to run, using any means necessary.
I agree with those below. Animal cruelty is rarely justified and this IS DEFINITELY NOT further any cause. The 'scientists' here should be reclassified as animal tormentors and be reported to the authorities

Вот аффтары ограниченные! Сделали бы уже нормальный лабиринт, а не эту комнату, которую и лабиринтом не назовешь. Тупо прямоугольная комната с хренями сверху. Да и чувствительность очень маленькая у трекбола.
The setup is pretty cool, but what they accomplished is even more amazing. The rat received water rewards when reaching certain places in the virtual environment. The achievement was sticking a recording pipette directly into a single neuron while recording extracellularly at the same time in a conscious behaving animal. Now they know what each cell does to generate the well-characterized extracellular field behavior. Awesome.
Actually, there isn't. The reason they had to do that was because part of the device requires a direct connection to certain nerves, and that connection is broken by even very slight movement.
Currently they are only looking at particular cellular activity in the brain that has to do with spatial navigation. There is no reason for them to add anything else.
1st, how is this a maze? It's a room with big stripped cylinders on top (wtf?). 2nd, this video is a very weak demo of the mouse's ability to navigate away from walls - it's just mostly running in one direction.

I doubt you could explain the significance of this! stop being an internet bully and a close minded ass hole. People believe different things because you do not believe in the bible does not make you right.
How can you possibly believe in a religion that has been admitting they were wrong the past 100 years due to science explaining everything? I'd wish religious people should be denied medical care and were told to just "pray to their god".
I'm sorry but I was not saying whether or not the bible is true that's for each person to decide themselves I'm saying you should not bash other people for their beliefs, it just makes you seem like a ass hole.
By your logic, whether or not unicorns and fairies are real is up to the person to decide. The problem with your logic is that people don't decide whether something is true, it either is true, or it isn't. All evidence points to the bible being wrong, misleading, plagiarized, immoral, or taken out of context to sound good.
I'm not bashing anyone's beliefs, I'm just saying that if they don't believe in the usefulness of science, they also should be denied the benefits of it, for they are actively stopping scientists from doing their work by ranting about "the morality".
i get the impression a lot of people are judging the value of this research based on the subjective impression of the 'setup'... similar to the scenario of a neanderthal observing a theoretical physicist.... please for fuck's sake don't comment on it unless you understand what it's for...

Jesus Christ. Is anyone asking where is this work going? This is a live animal. Is anyone thinking about the agony this animal is engaged in. God knows how many thousands of similar animals are undergoing this kind of torture. It's skull sawn open and wires in its little brain, as it's neck is clamped to a machine. What's the ultimate result of this kind of work? Dogs and other animals will have similar nightmarish torture as they become 'hybrids' of robots for personal or military use. Condemn
Laboratory animals are generally anesthetized for surgical procedures so the pain issue is moot. The rat may experience some disorientation and initial discomfort with the head clamping mechanism, but I bet that fades away once it gets used to it and it starts getting its rewards..
If all goes well, we'll work our way up to toddlers and infants soon.
It was my first reaction. Many a rat went through mazes when I was at Yale. The intelligence of a rat is amazing by the way. However I got the distinct feeling that this experiment bordered on torture..
