  • @theglobehopper actually, the scientists use this for a very clear cause. They used the virtual environment to explore the behavior of place neurons. Place neurons play a key role in mammals to determine their spatial location. They only fire during motion though. We do not have the tech to record from cells that are moving. The virtual environment allowed the cells to activate without actually moving so they could be studied. Research from this was published in Nature.

  • Either they do it to mice, or we dont learn anything. If you're going to be an "animal rights activist", you get to not benefit from all the technologies humanity has developed as a result of experiments involving animals.

the same way fighting a war isn't "cruelty to soldiers"

  • poor mouse ;'(

  • that is a big shit... STOP ANIMAL SLAVERY

  • Голова мыши удерживается в неподвижном состоянии держателями, которые в свою очередь содержат зонды, проникающие глубоко в мозг и считывающий информацию, эта мышь скорее всего бегает последние минуты

  • I agree with those below. Animal cruelty is rarely justified and this IS DEFINITELY NOT further any cause. The 'scientists' here should be reclassified as animal tormentors and be reported to the authorities

  • @theglobehopper how is this animal cruelity? In what way are they abusing this mouse? Its running on it's own accord and is navigating though an artificial environment! It can choose not to run, but it chooses it. it becomes animal cruelty once they FORCE it to run, using any means necessary.

  • @BBQwatchman you know it's skull is chopped off right?

  • @theglobehopper are you religious?

  • I agree with those below. Animal cruelty is rarely justified and this IS DEFINITELY NOT further any cause. The 'scientists' here should be reclassified as animal tormentors and be reported to the authorities

  • I hate what we do to animals!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't care what it's for. And I'm a bachelor of science in psychology major...I am so disheartened every time I am asked to watch these injustices to the poor mice.

  • The Reward is cheese?

  • 0:24-0:26 The mouse is on the ball still without falling off or being strained by the hooks in any way. This is incredible humane science, not abuse.

  • not very maze like, more box like... but still kewl :3

  • at first they wanted to use doom but they found it very addictive XD

  • how ironic that a mouse is on a big ball mouse.

  • snake is slowly creeping from behind...

  • I don't understand these 'PETA' shitheads. Seriously!

  • я не понял а куда она должна двигаться??

  • cant wait to see that mouse play doom

  • thats so dump :P

  • Double kill! Triple kill! Unstoppable! GODLIKE!!!

    That mouse pwns.

  • haha

  • a mouse sprinter!!! wouau!!!

  • Why pay people to control military planes when you can hire monkeys and mice to?

  • Poor mouse, forced to run or get suspended by hooks and falling off.

  • The setup is pretty cool, but what they accomplished is even more amazing. The rat received water rewards when reaching certain places in the virtual environment. The achievement was sticking a recording pipette directly into a single neuron while recording extracellularly at the same time in a conscious behaving animal. Now they know what each cell does to generate the well-characterized extracellular field behavior. Awesome.

  • Why is there no virtual cheese to find!?

  • They locked his head in the device? I'm sure there is a better way to do that,,,,

  • Actually, there isn't. The reason they had to do that was because part of the device requires a direct connection to certain nerves, and that connection is broken by even very slight movement.

  • how is this a maze? the mouse is all,

"This is just a fuckin room!"

  • Thats not a maze, its a room

  • fantastic

  • It needs a rocketlauncher ;-)

  • Why there is no weapon pickups?

  • RE: MosselKots (1 week ago) "funky setup though... great to entertain guests..

try it with a dog next =]

(and give it a gun and some cats to shoot)"

    Pathetic.

  • i call it sense of humor.

  • poor mouse doesnt know where to go XD

  • Where can I download this map?

  • "wouldn't it be funny if we got the university to pay for a mouse to use a mouse?"

"yeah, hot mouse on mouse action"

    "gimme the lighter, it's out"

  • Currently they are only looking at particular cellular activity in the brain that has to do with spatial navigation. There is no reason for them to add anything else.

  • In the future, we will be playing games against a mice :)

  • Hell yea :D!

  • No it isn't.

  • Yeah, that poor mouse will be terribly bored until they hook up quake to that display

  • what the mice ever do to you!

  • Cuuuuuuuuute!

  • 1st, how is this a maze? It's a room with big stripped cylinders on top (wtf?). 2nd, this video is a very weak demo of the mouse's ability to navigate away from walls - it's just mostly running in one direction.

  • It's cute how it comes up to a dead end, deliberates for a second, and starts backpedalling.

  • Can it still make lefthand turns after they "connected up" it's brain?

funky setup though... great to entertain guests..

try it with a dog next =]

(and give it a gun and some cats to shoot)

  • Damn I wish I had one of these at home.

  • The poor thing is just running around in a circle. That's not science.

  • Animal abuse!

Change maps, add color, and sound, and by gawd add more functions to the user interface!

  • It look as if it fixed there

  • yh but u like 7 yr olds

  • This is more like a virtual ugly room than a maze.

  • Animal Abuse!

  • Poor thing :/

  • 2 hot to get caught with my undies around my temples. i bet you have no idea what im talking about

  • its not even in a maze just a rectangular box.

  • How is this not 5 stars c'mon people

  • i want to see that mouse in a vr trap.

  • how long till google finds a way to enslave mice to run its search engine?

  • The mouse wants a map change to q2dm1 The Edge! He wants cheese too....

  • i love this

  • Let's see if the mouse can play Doom...

  • lucky little mouse

  • wow way to spend a couple fucking grand

  • You obviously don't get this significance. Go hug a bible if you don't care about science.

  • How can you possibly believe in a religion that has been admitting they were wrong the past 100 years due to science explaining everything? I'd wish religious people should be denied medical care and were told to just "pray to their god".

  • I'm sorry but I was not saying whether or not the bible is true that's for each person to decide themselves I'm saying you should not bash other people for their beliefs, it just makes you seem like a ass hole.

  • By your logic, whether or not unicorns and fairies are real is up to the person to decide. The problem with your logic is that people don't decide whether something is true, it either is true, or it isn't. All evidence points to the bible being wrong, misleading, plagiarized, immoral, or taken out of context to sound good.

  • lol troll

  • I'm not bashing anyone's beliefs, I'm just saying that if they don't believe in the usefulness of science, they also should be denied the benefits of it, for they are actively stopping scientists from doing their work by ranting about "the morality".

  • i get the impression a lot of people are judging the value of this research based on the subjective impression of the 'setup'... similar to the scenario of a neanderthal observing a theoretical physicist.... please for fuck's sake don't comment on it unless you understand what it's for...

  • @tuntitommosille... your brain is probably worth less than a pizza and two cans of beer...

  • The maze looks upside down haha, that mouse was trapped inside a square.

  • Can someone explain to me whats going on in this video? thanks!

  • Yah. It's clearly intracellular dynamics of hippocampal place cells during virtual navigation

  • the mouse always goes right lol

  • Alright so we put a mouse in a virtual maze, NOW can we work on curing cancer?

  • hang on we gotta make your ipod smaller

  • haha good one!

  • That's nothing , I rigged up a cat to play Halo 3 and a chicken to do Guitar Hero 2. Still working on the ferret to play Grand Theft Auto 4.

  • Think that's cool? Well I just trained a lobster to solve a rubik's cube. And soon my cybernetic octopus army will help me conquer the world! I hope that ferret of yours can handle a real AK because my octopus crew knows kung-fu. You should see those little buggers handle 4 pairs of nunchucks at a time! It's quite a scene! They play a mean piano as well.Although there's not much combat value in that I do encourage my tentacled minions to explore their creative side... what were we taking about?

  • if it won't help you lose weight, give you a boner, or regrow your hair the pitifully stupid and short sighted general public doesn't care about it

  • The cheese is a lie man!!!!

  • does anyone know the point / product of such an experiment?

  • And i assume you are a Vegan are you?

So its ok to abuse animals for food but it isn't ok to use them for experiments? Both of which have a purpose just as valuable as each other..

  • Laboratory animals are generally anesthetized for surgical procedures so the pain issue is moot. The rat may experience some disorientation and initial discomfort with the head clamping mechanism, but I bet that fades away once it gets used to it and it starts getting its rewards..

If all goes well, we'll work our way up to toddlers and infants soon.

  • and what exactly is wrong with that ?

  • I like Chicken

  • not really a maze, but cool regardless.

  • it's a real mouse using a trackball mouse. lol, irony.

  • you should see the one with the donkey on a motorbike doing a virtual wall of death...fuckin hilarious........

  • illumanati

  • get out

  • i want to squeeze that mouse/rat.

  • dude its pretty much just an illusion see the little floating things?

  • look up the illumanati and the new world order.they need to be stopped

  • This is cruel and unneccessary! Shame!

    Eben

  • lol!!!! are you serious?

  • It was my first reaction. Many a rat went through mazes when I was at Yale. The intelligence of a rat is amazing by the way. However I got the distinct feeling that this experiment bordered on torture..

  • the mouse ent controlling it ..its just running in the same place all the time and what is pinned up by its ears???id be fuckin running 2 !!

  • they didnt honestly put these thingis through its ears!?!? How cruel!

  • first, it's not a maze, second what the fuck is the point of this in the first place

  • The point is we've dominated this species and it now has to do our bidding. In this case, run around on a ball.

  • a mouse on a ball, big deal

  • u might see this as a mouse on a ball. but I see it as WE ARE GONNA BE EXPERIENCING COOL VIDEO GAMES LIKE THIS SOON!! =D

  • yeah and video gamers will be the lab rats. Hmmm I wonder if they're start drugging us? LSD and VR anyone?

  • You are apparently not on the ball.

  • i feel almost as if i was born onto one of those

  • Cutting down on shrooms mighr help.

  • D8> FUCK!!!!!

  • the mouse was on crack, and having a blast. lol

  • We'd like one for humans please.

  • dude, it's just a square maze and the mouse is just running in a giant circle around everything.

  • Mouse is only just running through a screen!

  • ok what is the point strange person

  • cool) so they actualy see such stuff

  • Impressive

  • Whats its Xbox Live ID so we can play Call of Duty?....

    Amazing stuff!

  • HAHAHAHAHAHA

You get a well deserved +1 from me sir.

  • It's a rat running on a fucking wheel.

Am I meant to be impressed?

  • Definitely fake...

  • Damn.... your even from kansas?!

LUL... i guess we are really mismatched then.

  • Intracellular dynamics of hippocampal place cells during virtual navigation? Wow! And here I thought I was watching a mouse with bolts through his head struggling to find a way out of the virtual Seventh Level of Hell you put him in.

  • LMAOOOO!

  • That's not a maze, that is a box.

  • A mouse with bolts in his head reminded you of this? Hmmm...oh, I get it, your comment is a lame come-on for your lame website.

    NOW I get it.

  • Stage 2 - Navigation: Complete

Mouse is nearing taking over the world!!!

  • GAYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!

  • hahahaha

  • The mouse runs in a right hand circle through the whole video. It looks like a square room, with 3-4 columns hanging from the ceiling not even touching the ground. That means this was worthless, and now take that fucking mouse off of that shitty device and let him live normally.

  • Comment removed

  • A mouse on a trackball!

  • For a lame video, it's getting a lot of action. A bit of conversation in the piece could make it interesting.

  • They see me rollin'

  • The mouse is in Tron.

  • That's the shittiest maze ever created! Who created that? Since when are mazes a room with partial columns hanging from the ceiling!? The mouse is just going around in a right hand circle.

WTF. What kind of university did these researchers go to? Science = Fail

  • guys i just noticed somthing...... they make those circuler things look like floating objects. soooooo....... this is kinda like an illusion maze.

  • Poor little thing, I feel sorry for him. But then again, rats and mice are being tested in labs for my health and future development, don't want to be a hipocrite.

  • we need this experiment done...the sooner the better i say..u never know when you may be made to run on a ball with your ears clipped to some medievel contraption whilst lost in a futuristic maze...these things need to tested just incase..

  • haha hardly a maze

  • A maze requires obstacles... A VR box is more like it... and it went in circles, HMM, VERY SCIENCEY.

  • what a bunch of sick bastards...

why don't they just stick the electrodes into their own brains???

  • its just a mouse gripped in a holder .. there is a screen infront and the ball on which the mouse is running controls the direction of images on the screen. its harmless i tell ya

  • maze? its just a room

  • e dai?

  • oh, oh. Un rator esclavo de los humanos caminando en circulo! que gran descubrimiento! avisar al ny TIMOS, mete a tu madre en la maquinita

  • where's the sound of bagaça?

  • hii

  • and then they ask y most people av no faith in science.

  • most people? no not most people, some people.

  • Nice =)

  • Well, your comment doesn't make me laugh. It makes me wonder why you're so desperate for attention. Maybe you're just an ass.

  • Sadly, this is what Obama plans to do to all of us.

  • well.... thats one minute of my life ill never get back

  • NASCAR in reverse, turn right turn right turn right...

  • I like the experiment's name:

"Intracellular dynamics of hippocampal place cells during virtual navigation." Haha. I'd just call it mouse in a maze.

  • you guys are just jealous of the mouse

  • wtf?

  • Only geeks and nerds enjoy this kind of crap

  • Calling people geeks or nerds is only implying that you are an inferior human being.

  • petaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • errr that's no maze... Even if it's a spiral.

WTF? it goes round in circles... I could stick a dead mouse on there and it would probably have the same effect!

This sucks!!! Proves nothing and the mouse only changes direction once and that was only a minor change... stupid maze is stupid!!!

  • I love it. This is the greatest.

  • Эх, прикольно, это как так :)
