  • The last time I heard this album (EP) was about 15 years ago, in a college dorm room with a head-full of mushrooms and some like-minded friends. Aside from being fairly convinced I wet myself a little at about 5:00, I achieved a level of euphoria never before thought possible. This EP does a fantastic job of setting the scene for a 'shroom ride. The timelessness of the instruments and themes, the eerie sense of deja-vu brought on by subtle recurrence of certain musical phrases...

    10Q!

  • I remember listening to this back in the late 90s. The first sample used is a rocking chair, and then it just slowly moves through what I envision as the genesis of the cosmos. The amount of layers contained at the end is breathtaking.

  • The harpsichord/piano section at the end gives me chills. greatest orbital track.

  • Orbital really need to do more soundtrack work. Event Horizon was good but they need to do an entire soundtrack all to themselves. This could be off an imaginary film. Truly epic.

  • @69crafty They had full control over the soundtrack to "The Saint" and that is a BEAST soundtrack. So many good songs are in that one it's a must-buy.

  • I have been a fan of Orbital since 1996, and until this weekend had never known these verisons of The Box existed until I found a copy at a local shop. Amazing stuff.

  • The best track ever ;]

  • I had this single YEARS ago. lost it, and now I get to hear it again...

    THANKS FOR SHARING

    peace

  • master piece

  • I played this song to my friend once... shortly after, he had headphones on in a pitch black room listening to it again. Genius track.

  • Tsukuhime sent me here.

  • YEEEEAAAHHHHHH!! I'm in love

  • I would love to see a version of this edited starting from the 4:48 mark till the end. It's amazing with the harpsichord leading in to all that goodness.

  • So ...original ..........

  • Huh wow never heard this before, thanks for the upload.

  • ¥T

  • haha. I've been meaning to have a re-listen to this track for years. My Dad built himself a Harpsichord which he keeps in his living room and when this track was released I taught myself the chord sequence that kicks in at 4:48. Still rock it out to this day, Love it!

  • 1:32 starts reminding me of Left 4 Dead

  • got it on vinyl)

  • Have this single-suppose you could call it an EP really-no track listing but my itunes gives it as-

    The Box (Radio Edit) 4:14

    The box(untitled version) 7:46-this one

The box(untitled version) 8:40-which I've seen called version three on a free cassette I got with some mag back when the album came out-so I thought the version in this vid was called version two-well it is the second version on the disc.

    The Box(Vocal Reprise) 7:36

This version-untitled 1 is great tho-

  • Brilliant version of the ever-so-brilliant song! Thanks!

  • I agree about the best version of the Box. However, sounds like either the record's been played a lot. :P

  • I think I remember an interview where they said the creaking sounds at the beginning were from a studio chair that they sampled.

  • This song fucking rocks. You can skip to the end if you want. But you will appriciate it more if you listen to the whole song.

  • im not lesbian im not gay...but i love u all 4 senses of music coz that its beautyfullllllll........did u know sun is empty ;)

  • i justy love how weird it goes at the 4-49 mark inspired me to try wring a 16minute tune called vanity version1.0

  • this is really just part of a 27 minute long song; one of my favorite parts actually-- too bad the quality is horrific!

  • Check my video response above for a much higher quality version (direct from the CD single).

  • One of my favourite Orbital tracks. Just amazing. Freaky as f*ck, but amazing.

  • I got this version on my "In Sides" double cd pack. This version of "The Box" is actually almost 30 mintues long.

  • this version tho is nothig like the song i expected its just long intro to nothing

  • Intro to nothing?? You obviously didn't listen past 4 minutes. This song rocks out after that! take another listen!

  • i think the recorded sounds high quality, maybe ur pc is shit

  • remember looking at this record cover in virgin aound 95 96? thinking how distinctive

  • What the version of this song?

  • I have the 12" vinyl edition of "The box" (which is pictured in the video here), and that is where this version is from. This version doesn't have a name. I assume this version is also on the cd-single, although I can't say for sure.

  • I'd like to see you get better results off a vinyl.....

  • sorry to have put it so rudely at first. but this sounds as if you recorded it with a microphone. Even off a vinyl you can record directly into your soundcard if you buy a record preamp.

  • well I recorded it off the vinyl using one of those USB turntables. Did the thought cross your mind it may be just the way the song sounds? It certainly doesn't sound like it's been recorded off a mic :s

  • I know very well how it sounds. Never mind.

  • Thank you so much for posting this. i wonder, was there ever an attempt to re-do the harpsichord bit with a live ensemble?

  • marvelous..... Feel myself, like Alice in Wonderland...

  • Simply fantastic, epic, brilliant masterpiece !!!!!

  • I love how it ends on an uncertain note

  • you have rest???

  • One Word: "Epic"

  • Is this version available on any CD? I have a couple of others, but the harpsichord/piano section on this one is awesome, and the reason I got into Orbital seriously. Got 10+ CDs of their other stuff, but haven't found this track.

  • it should be available on the CD single version, I only got the vinyl as it was in a lot with 2 other Orbital vinyls - Times Fly and The Saint - for £2.49 buy it now on ebay :D

  • Yes, I have the cd single version and I don't even think the tune is mentioned on it, it is just there and it is simply fantastic !!!

  • @EntropyQ3 it is def on the CD single version-with the same cover as is on this youtube vid-but there may be others.I agree this songs piano/harpischord version is crazy!!!ive heard it a few hundred times at least-i saw it being sold on discogs a while ago

  • @EntropyQ3 I bought two different versions of Insides, which were sold in the US. One has two versions of Satan, Also the Saint, the Sinner, and Halcyon Live. The other CD2 has Times Fly(slow/fast), Sad But New, The Tranquilizer, and a version of the Box with this in it. The bonus version of The Box is 28mins long, this part starts about 4mins or so in.

  • @EntropyQ3 Just at total random this came on the bonus disc my friend got with the In Sides album. My copy didnt come with this one. They are known to include extended mixes and slight song variation easter eggs on their records with no way of telling which one you got. They are just cool like that.

  • @EntropyQ3 It is on the In Sides (Special Edition)

  • used to listen to it every evening, and I mean every evening for months and never got tired of it! epic music

  • loved this for a long time ... feels like it should be put over some epic lord of the rings scene haha

  • This one is the best mix, again thanks for posting

  • I've uploaded it now :D

  • I had the CD,and lost it, ttt for harpsichords, or clavinets, or hammered dulcimers, or whatever it is.

  • i loved the last parttttttttt.......its great

  • my god i've been looking for this for over three years and i just stumbled across it! GOD this is such an amazing remix of such an already great song.

and i just found another great remix: on itunes search "the box re-mix bump". It's got the same dark feel as this remix

    Love it.

  • I really love the piano part, I was very impressed as I heard it 8 (?) years before now. such intensive.

  • by far the best version.
