Noise removal in audacity works perfectly if you leave a slightly larger cut of empty noise. It may be going 'tinny' because you are removing some important noise in the noise removal. If you leave approx 5-7 seconds blank empty recording at the beginning of every recording and then use that to noise remove, it should come out perfect without having to adjust the setting when you hit 'remove noise'.
