she hits the note, but she lacks of power in her voice. I've heard her live and sadly you can't hear her unless she is singing in front a microphone. Nothing like the old school or german or european singers.
@chaconazo7 She works very hard at making a big enough sound... This french stuff is fine for her, but Traviata... UH UH.. she just lacks enough voice .. and especially ease in the upper register to make that a role that is right for her.. I agree with you.. This is a lovely voice but lacks power.
No, the option is the B-flat, not the D ;) the D is the note that it's supposed to be ;) But not everyone is Sybil Sanderson. The role requires not a soprano leggero to sing the high D but a full-lirico or spinto who not always have a D.
I agree. while any (trained) soprano should be able to vocalize a high D in a warm up (in fact, most will have high Fs and above), a spinto or dramatic soprano won't always have them in performance quality.
I had the honor of seeing Renee perform Thais at the Met and it was amazing! She is my idol and I would love to be able to have the presence and talent that she delivers on stage in all her roles. I study voice classically in hopes of one day being able to perform in roles such as this at the LA Opera and elsewhere. Keep on singing beautifully Renee! I'll always be listening. :)
Forgive me for saying this, but I find it endearing that your dream seems to be that you sing at LA Opera. If you'd say Vienna Staatsoper, Covent Garden, the Paris Opera, the MET, La Scala, the Liceu, Munich Staatsoper or Berlin Staatsoper... but LA Opera.... really charming. Good luck! :)
yeah, she's a goddes, I know haha, I saw her 3 days ago, 2 days ago again, yesterday I couldn't, but I'll see her again in a few days or maybe tomorrow, she's the best singer and an awesome person and if you know how to get deep to her she'l teach you a lot of important things!
God only knows her voice is more real than anyone in the new version of that musical theatre production, because she's an opera singer. I'm telling ya, people today should start off as classical singers and THEN try singing contemporary and see how bad it is for their voices....I've been singing classically for three years now, and whenever I ever attempt to sing comtep, I get a sore throat from singing incorrectly. I needa learn how to sing it in my nose.
I know! It's confusing to get your head around :-) But yeh, she's a soprano. You can tell because of her range and also the timbre of her voice- mezzos just sound different! Also if you look her up on youtube a bit more you'll see that all her roles are soprano roles. :-)
I have seen Renee live in all her roles and spoken with her frequently. Suffice it to say, one's opinion is just that..their opinion. It is a general consensus that she is the preeminent soprano in the world today. In my personal opinion, having known and followed her career from its inception, she has only gotten better with age. No voice is totally perfect, however, the general consensus is hers is just as near perfect as anyone's. She is nearly 50 years old, and still has a sumptous voice.
baritone426 you sound like paternostro63...you woul'dnt recognized talent if it was standing in front of you naked. Netbrenko is beginning...let's see what she'll be like after the number of years Renée has given to the career...gheorghiu is great does'nt mean fleming is bad!!!
Netrekko is going to her 40th birthday, very soon.. Renée sings everything well. her range is enormous she is a great artist, Angela has a emotional voice, great in Rondine, very good Anna may be better in bel canto, for now. l love all. They are beautiful women.
completely agreed, ariodante76. she's just so overrated. Yeah, she has her good notes, but I saw her at the Met, and anything that was in her middle-upper range and above was so manipulated that the French was indecipherable. she was pitchy as well. Hampson, on the other hand, was fantastic. if you need to cover and modify that much, you're doing something wrong. it did no justice to Massenet's music.

have you HEARD angela gheorghiu? diana damrau? anna netrebko? people need to realize that if the Met didn't publicize this voice, people wouldn't like it. it's not enjoyable to listen to - in fact, you really wonder what her voice has to go through to make that sound. she needs to stop covering. listen to fleming's high notes, then listen to gheorghiu's. gheorghiu's are beautiful, while fleming's are pushed and ugly. please, before you begin hero worship, get an education.
have you seen her live? its a phenomenon. i must admit that i didnt really like her before but when i saqw her last night at the met... i became a convert
yeah I have, saw her last Tuesday at the Met. it's just not a pleasing sound to me. especially when she goes higher in her voice and increases her volume. it doesn't matter what vowel she was supposed to sing, she just sings a closed and covered version of "ah" or something, i can't even decipher it...
Sure I know Gheorghiu saw her live a few times and she has a beautiful voice. Nice Italian way of singing(great way to move public), but not the THE VOICE Renee has with full-bodied lyricism and also the high pianissimo singing. This full range is rare for a soprano, as you baritone426, being educated, surely know.Netrebco is impressive, but like you (17y?), a bit young, she's promising thu but not whatso ever ready for something like thais. Did you see the live recording here on youtube?
yeah I saw her live. i wasn't impressed. she may have an unprecedented range, but there's a muddiness in her upper voice that, since we're using her as a comparison, gheorghiu doesn't have. now SHE can float up there. Did you see gheorghiu in La Rondine at the Met, or live for that matter? She can do this and more. Such a good technique and far less modification than Fleming.
I do appreciate good singing. I just happen not to like Gheorhiu. Art is all based on opinion. I'm happy for her and for anyone that brings people to the opera or sells a show out.
The Thais telecast was indeed wonderful. I still feel the excitement and can't wait to see the TV re-cast of this performance. And as Musoph21 comments: Rene "is the only soprano who could do justice" to this role. Question: How could anyone listening now to Rene singing this aria(Dis-moi)dare disparage her in such an ignorant, insensitive, uninformed manner? But then, 2% of US voters say Bush is a great president!
lol really...I read reviews and they unanimously said she is the only the soprano who can do this role justice and that her piannis floated with grace and ease. I've never heard her scream..
I am finally starting to love Fleming. Her book The Inner Voice is giving me more insight into her. I love her voice in this SOOOO much more than in other pieces. :D Brava!!!
(I assume every one can understand French right ? ;-)

She isn't terrible.
but she has a very closed sound to her voice.
listening to her makes my throat hurt. I honestly don't know how she can sound like that.
There are also a few seams in her voice.
I don't think that her voice was meant to be great. She just doesn't have the natural beauty in her color.
She works hard, and I can appreciate that. I just don't get all this Renee Fleming worship.
She isn't anything spectacular. Not by any means.
