  • cryo are determined to destroy classic scifi novels with poor games... UBIK on ps1 anyone? I FUCKING THOUGHT NOT...that game sucked aswell.

  • @RealGoonieKid How ironic is that they also made another game based on the first novel(the first Dune video game ever) and it was surprisingly awesome combination strategy/economy/spiceproduction/adventure.

  • I would've described it the same way. I have it, but I've actually managed to beat it, after figuring out the trick behind the "backstab" and the shout, and that enemies do indeed forget about you. Aesthetically horrible in many ways, and completely lacked subtle transitions. Controls on PC sucked and could not be customized. Camera moved way too slow, and there was no sensitivity options. Music kept cutting out during cut scenes. Some of the late game levels do get a little interesting though.

  • Sardaukar and Harkonnen are plural and Singular.

  • a shit review for a 20 second review of your favorite game emperor of dune....just say to in the title instead.

  • You can't outrun a sandworm! lame

  • oh and you say you've never played anotehr game by cryo... i love the first dune game and play it often like most people play tetris or minesweeper or something. but i cant honestly recommend it to someone not used to early 90s retro games because they're hard to get in to when you're not a disillusioned sceptic in a world full of alternative options

  • @EvilStreaks I mean when you ARE one. I'm tired.

  • it's still probably better than brian herbert and kevin anderson's garbage cash-cow prequels. maybe not quite. about the same.

  • i didnt do any of the game either. i dont buy many games, and i get the most out of what i buy. but this....

did you know it bankrupted cryo afterwards cos everyone hated it?

  • one more thing for the stupidilitys splintercell is got their skills from this game

  • game is perfect coolenes sure for time it was made

cyro had some really great interesting games wich where different than standard games like

they where often more difficult i think thats why many people hate

  • If only bioware decided to make a game based on dune the world would make sense again. Seriously though I cant think of another book that would make a better game.

  • @xxslayer66xx Oooh BioWare doing Dune *drools*. Well provided the Baldur's Gate or Mass Effect Team are on it. Dragon Age 2 was a serious let down imo

  • LOL, only now have I noticed they misspelled Herbert's name in the intro screen ! How the hell can you mess even that up ?!

  • I've talked around and you do learn the Weirding Way, also.

In the form of The Voice.

  • I actually think I'll buy it.

I love games set in the early millenium, like Dark Forces II (Jedi Knight) which the graphics look alot like.

Visually, I think it looks cool.

And yeah, the knife part might be a drawback, but knives aren't supposed to have great range.

If you expect to attack the enemy from a good distance with your knife, you're an idiot.

Just exploring the levels and talking to the people would be neat.

Plus it sounds like he didn't even play the whole game.

  • Also if I'm mistaken - most armies use Dart-firing rifles and pistols in the Dune universe anyway, because the projectiles travel slow enough to pass through a shield.

Knives and swords are only used chiefly in Kanly Duels.

  • The graphics were fairly good for the time, but it was a bad game. Much as i wanted to like it, i couldnt.

  • wow u suck man

  • What is funny about these types of dune games is that they totally disregard the book. In the book, guns are hardly used because everyone has shields. Most of the combat in battles is hand to hand with knives and swords with stun guns as a secondary.

  • @brian18263 Unless I'm mistaken - Shields can't be used on Arrakis because they bring worms.

So on Dune, people are more free to use conventional firearms.

Many people mistake the guns in the Miniseries and Lynch version to be lasers - but in fact even these are just "Stunners" - moderately powered dart guns, like the Fremen maula pistol.

So if people can use ranged weapons instead of melee weapons - they will.

That's why it makes perfect sense that they used guns on Dune.

  • "DOON" - lol!!!!! it's DUNE!!!!!

  • does this game seem like it has the same feel as KOTOR??

  • Such a shame, because the game had potential, which was ruined. Did they even try to play it themselves? I honestly think not. And I honestly can't understand why a company would do that...

  • you havent seen dune 1 xD

  • Cryo did A500 Dune , the strat/RGP ver. my alltime farvorite.sadly the made this.

  • the scene where he's running from the sandworm looks kinda cool

  • I just stuffed the friggin' CD-ROM into the microwave. The light show I got from that was a lot more entertaining then the game itself. This game shouldn't have even made it to the shelves. Poor...

  • I'm a fan of the books but i want them to remake this game. Dune II is better than this game.

  • I literally never got past that fucking sand worm.

For years I kind of assumed the game was a practical joke... until I just now thought to google it. I wish it *had* been a practical joke. Now I just feel depressed at the thought of what it must have been like for the people who worked on this.

  • I agree. Loved the first Dune game, Dune II, Emperor, then bought this. What a waste of time and money. I spent about 20 minutes with it and had enough.

  • it's failure caused cryo to go bankrupt, which is probably unfortunate because they almost finished Dune Generations, which seems awesome. you should look that up.

and anyway, they made the original Dune game, on which westwoods' Dune II was based...

also Emperor: Battle for Dune was hardly any more succesful commercially than Frank Herbert's Dune.

  • They should have AVGN review this game.

  • man this game looks like it coulda been cool if it didnt suck so bad.

  • Como se llama el juego?

  • hahahahah iv never been so pissed off over a game before. seen it by chance, got home all excited ,, then spent 2 days in denial thinking i just couldnt work out the controls, i finaly clicked on to the fact that this is the worst game ever made. i wouldnt let my dog play this game. could have more fun poking my own eye out.,,, emperor and the 1st ever dune game are the ducks nuts tho :)

  • I only played this on PS2, and yes, it truly is one of the worst games ever made.

Did you find the glitch where Paul's eyes seem to pop out when you approach too close to a wall?

  • the beta testers were high on spice, that explains it;

besides, outsourcing to fremen is never a good idea in the first place

  • the movie:AWESOME!

    the game:CRAP!

  • @mattiathekaiju

Have you read the book? the Lynch movie was a piece of shit.

  • haha this guys hilarious. by the way, this game represents the books terribly. why can't a great book series like this get a decent game developer to back it? such potential for a great game...

  • i loved that game! >_>

  • Hmm, I thought this was never released. o_O

  • u r a fucking douche, turddude

  • Your mic is clipping. This makes for bad reviews. Regardless of how bad the game was for it's day, your review is even worse.

  • sure it was so bad for the time? ...

  • @RaShadowYT This game was absolute shit. I own it as a huge dune fan. I probobly threw it away at some point. Its crap. Not fun in any way.

  • I think a Dune MMORPG would kick ass. The books have all the makings of a good MMORPG. Technology, multiple settings (IX, Arakis, Cladan, Geidi Prime, Kaitain, and the nasty, Sulsa Secundus), a lot of hand to hand fighitng, and a magic system, Weirding, which could be very interesting if done well.

    Key words here: "Done Well"

  • im gonna die laughing with this game , you can't even quit it without using ctrl alt del

  • Too bad Cryo invested in this turd rather than working hard on their Dune MMO back then. That other game could have been revolutionary or at least kickass. Oh well...

  • This game is indeed ridiculously hard, until you get to the second mission, at which point you get the 'scream' ability and can kill almost everything as long as you keep your health actually low.

Some people might like the game still for the ridiculous challenge (which is mostly due to the awkward controls), especially when not using that previously mentioned ability.

    But yes it's very bad.

  • it had been better to take the good old adventure and redo it not made a bad action game sad...

  • man, i wished this game didn't suck :(

  • i agree the game did have a very poor structure and the story line didnt really follow that of the movie either, but remember it was made in like 2000 so u cant really be too harsh on the graphics.

  • The Devil Inside was a way better game by Cryo

  • It's not 'doon' Its DYOON.

  • Can you tell me how to pronounce anal?

  • @scottishterrierdude ANYAAL *grin*

  • @scottishterrierdude That is actually how you pronounce the word dune, it says in the dictionary so it must be right lol.

  • @scottishterrierdude No, but PLZ review Cryo's earlier(the first one ever created) Dune video game also based on the book.

  • Are you kidding me? Find me one person who pronounces it DYOON.

  • @MiRyRE Right! It's pronounced 'June'.

  • @Banserki Frank Herbert prefered pronouncing it 'Doon'.

  • I had this game so I can describe it for you:

    It's shit.

  • Comment removed

  • Yes, its real shit

Frank is Franck there. I can't understand that no one of Cryo recognized that the title is wrong!!!!!

  • "shut the fuck up and describe the game" - lol, priceless!

  • @makilkail lol ur such a douch bag

i actually liked the review nice man

  • @makilkail

    HE DID DESCRIBE IT

    "it sucks" thats all

  • @makilkail nice rage....

  • i wish he'd stop saying 'doon'

  • I would love to see a new Dune game. Hopefully done right. Would be great if it was also done by Bioware.

  • @SlyMcflyyyy good man i was just thinking alas bioware would have given it some justice, but i see alot of dune inpiration in mass effect anyway.

  • I just remembered that I finished this game. I Don't remember the ending sequence though...I do remember beating it though. About 6 years ago.

  • Dune 2000 is my favorite Dune game.

  • The game that killed Cryo.

  • Do you think that they will make another dune game? i have played all of them and there all great!!! i hope that they make a shooter like call of duty but instead dune! :D..... or another RTS that would be good

  • Who cryo? I hope not. But yeah, some developer no doubt will. Dune's too big a franchise to not have games made for it every so often.

  • @scottishterrierdude cryo wnet belly up, the rights defaulted back to the publisher of the books but I doubt there will be a new game unless another film is made.... game developers now seem to only care about film franchises.... and ones that are current at that.

  • @scottishterrierdude sorry, westwood got the liscence in 2001 and made only one game with it. (Emperor battle for dune.)

  • Haha nice to make a review about the baddest game ever.... haha how hilarious

  • I tought the film wasnt that great .. I lost my teeth when I saw there was a game..

  • what about books?

  • the books are like...THE BEST SCIENCE FICTION BOOKS EEEEEEEEEEEEEVEEEEEEERR!!!!!

    Hope that answers your question!

  • Yes, i am reading all of them in chronological order, i am at children of Dune now. The prequels were very good as well.

    K

  • @t260y so true

  • @t260y

    Most agree.

  • I really want Bethesda to do a Dune game. It would be great on the [insert Oblivion/Fallout3 game engine here] engine. Plus, I would want to be playing a normal character who is not Paul, but is perhaps involved in the story. I want to see great battle sequences with lots of melee and shooting combined. I want to ride atop a sandworm into battle, sniping Harkonnen from my position, and I want Dark Brotherhood-style assassination/raid missions that the Fremen are so good at. Sigh...

  • Well, Dune is a big franchise. I certainly don't think Emperor: BFD is the last Dune game to be made. For me, I don't think it's a question of if another Dune game will come out it's just when and - will it stink as much as this?

  • Indeed it is a question of quality (hence my desire for Bethesda to do it).

  • Man, i know what you mean!

  • Bloody hell this is awful. Never played and by the looks of it, never will. I just love the original Cryo's Dune, and can't believe they did this.

  • You're right. This game looks like shit.

And why isn't Paul wearing his full stillsuit in the open desert? You would think they'd get that part right if nothing else.

  • I had the same frigging problem on ps2, i bought the game as a huge dune fan. But i did not have any clue where to go or what to do in the first stage.. I tried everything, but luck was only thing that seemed obvious.

  • So true, can't get past the worm level (level 1) Stupid camera, I mean: where the hell am I supposed to go????

  • Escape the worm TOWARDS the screen, and TRY no to get stuck... AWFUL!

  • There was a worse version of this...on...PS2-in that version, whenever you approached a wall, Paul's body would dissapear, leaving only his two goggling eyes on the screen; I kid you not...

    Thanks for posting!

  • haha, good stuff.

  • hahahaha! amazing review

  • The first Dune game - a classic, was also done by Cryo, so just like a lot of companies, the accountants took over and the series went downhill big time!

  • this game is a little shit but its created for dune film funs
