  • Gwebbly shwupt, hurp-hurp mandingo splort, heembrow? Plust-tuskiddy shreem putkoweklekshtoopeepeeborshtquorsht!

  • What kind of sticks are those?

  • I read some years ago a book by a bass player named Hinton who played with Jo Jones. He said that Jo Jones was royalty on the drums, but he was a control freak who always tried to tell others what to do. From what to play to where to stand on the bandstand to what you should eat for dinner. Milt Hinton said it would have been comical if he wasn't so serious.

  • Cuánto swing, cuánta seguridad. Oh, sí .

  • the boss of bosses! nice arguing, by the way :-)

  • man this solo+his smile made me grin all day long :)

wonder if he was on anything.... :p

  • yeah he's high on music

  • fucking amazinig. I am speechless.

    a true master beyond.

  • whats he trying to say im new to this language

  • TheLastPictureShow you don't have any idea what you are talking about: Master means you've spent 30+ years as a master player, innovator, sideman, bandleader, teacher. Papa Jo student list looks like a who's who of drummer -Max Roach, Buddy Rich, etc. If you asked Ari or Brian neither would put themselves in that category at this time. It is possible to become famous and/or rich in a short amount of time. But unlike so many things today mastery of anything can not be cheated.

  • holy shit this guy is soo expressive, gotta love him and his groove...

  • Papa Jo deserves so much credit, it's hard to know where to begin. Besides being a great drummer, he was influential in the evolution of jazz drumming itself. He didn't just play a style, he changed and shaped it.

Watching him, he has that look of confidence of a guy who's totally in control of what he's doing.

  • his facial expressions kinda remind me of Tim Curry from "The Rocky Horror Picture show"

  • This ought to be required viewing for anyone who presumes to pick up a pair of sticks.

  • yepper..a true master...said more by playing less .

  • i wish i was him.

  • They just don't make drummers like this anymore.

  • I love the "now watch this, motherfuckers"- look on his face at 1:39. Probably the most entertaining drum solo ever.

  • it will never get better than this...PERIOD!!!!

His calibre of musicality and showmanship is beyond the reach of many we call GREAT'S today.

  • Super Bad Mutha fucka!!!!!! Wow!!!!

  • His presence is just too classy. Charisma illuminates off of him like protons and electrons. WOW!

  • ..very very very rare man!!yeahh!!

  • Extremely complex rhythms going on here. No "shucking and jivin" at all. He is a rhythm builder. He builds complex rhythm from simple rhythmic fundamentals. He is a true, learned, "rhythmic composer". They are very rare breed indeed.

  • sick drummer but lol i think he was on shrooms

  • Why even pick up the sticks! this dude is a monster.

  • i love his cheeky grins!

  • Thanks for posting this. Truly amazing!

  • and people say Danny Carrey and Mike Portnoy are the best drummers ever....educated people know better - this guy is one of the best ever at creating rythms. His independence and creativity are amazing...his timing is no less amazing..this solo displays technical and musical drumming at its best.

  • Follow the recording timelines...Jones is the one who influenced Rich and Krupa.

  • looking for the first drummer to play with brushes could Papa Jo be the answer

  • Now that is a master at his best!

  • He was beautiful. One of the all time legends of the instrument. Wish more young drummers would see this.

  • This is really amazing,

  • That demonstrates that drumming is not only doing a lot of fast and chaotic noise :)

    Thanks for posting the video

  • He is so relaxed. And this groove!!!

  • now this is what you call drumming

  • I have never seen these types of facial expressions on a drummer whilst doing a solo!

  • This was from the days when people appreciated a much more sublime style matched with massive talent. Most of the great musicians from this era demonstrate these qualities.

  • thanks a lot for posting...

    love it!

  • This guys drumming just makes me smile, you cant help it! I love how he doesn't just drop a beat on his drums, he plays with them. Magic.

  • One of my all time favorite solos. Such a creative touch on drumming that is lost these days

  • I love the look on his face man.... He is the role model for the cool and relaxed drummers like Jeff Ballard who just sit and play so musically and relaxed like they were born playing that way..

  • Players such as Thomas Lang can only dream about playing like this.

    Beautiful :)

  • Comment removed

  • I thought I was crazy to want to play the drums with my fingers...I guess with enough confidence, you can do anything on stage and people will like it. This is great.

  • Kids these days don't understand this type of creativity.

  • NATURAL!!

  • Officialy my favorite drum solo ever!

  • man, this guy truly embodies the joy of drumming.

  • There are many drummers i love grooving: Tony Williams, Elvin Jones, Jack de Johnette... But soloing the are only two masters that combine skills and melodic notion: papa joe and max roach.

  • That's totally not true. They are all masters with fundamentally different approaches to soloing.

And there are new drummers you neglect entirely- both Brian Blade and Ari Hoenig, for example.

  • You´re right. Ari is part of this tradition of melodic soloing. Brian Blade and Eric Harland are different (altough, of course they are super drummers).

  • They excellent drummers but not Masters they may well all become masters some day but not yet. I mean Papa Joe's students were people like Max Roach and Buddy Rich plus many others people who went on to become masters and innovators themselves. Learn about the tradition of drumming before you state something so uninformed and foolish sounding.

  • What a load of malarkey. I know plenty about the tradition of drummer- the question is not how great Ari or Brian's students are, it's whether they perform as improvisers at a level that qualifies them for "master" status. The answer is yes- Brian Blade and Ari Hoenig are every bit as good as Papa Jo Jones. I don't particularly care whether you like to hear it or not.

  • You are entitled to your opinion but I know Ari and I know he would not classify himself as a master and I doubt Brian would either so clearly you don't know as much about the tradition as think you do and that is my opinion.

  • The only thing I said, in the first place, is that i like drummers who play their solos in a "melodic" way, such as Papa Joe and Max Roach. Then I said that Ari Hoenig follows this tradition. Nothing more. I´m not saying that one is better than other. I play drums and i´m no one, but can i have my own taste? Thank you.

  • Agreed Brian and Ari play melodically and I misunderstood your comment and apologize. I just miffed by the ignorance of some posting here to compare someone 20 to 30 years younger than Papa Jo and call them equals? They may get there but it's much too early to anoint them. Ironically Ari who I know would agree and Brian I'm pretty sure would as well and takes nothing away from their tremendous talent displayed today either.

  • Three quotes from Thelononious Monk:

"A note can be small as a pin or big as the world, it depends on your imagination."

"Whatever you think can´t be done, somebody will come along and do it"

"A genius is the one most like himself"

  • So smart. He's my heroe. When looking at this video, you can understand the way he plays if you know that Jo started as tap dancer.

  • Great Film- thanks for posting- it's like a succinct portrait of what cool is all about- what a great personality- what a lovely style- and you can see it's all part of a beautiful whole- can't think of anyone around today that exemplifies this kind of attitude-- all the drummers I can think of no matter what style play like such..... attack dogs!

  • WOW this is really poetry on the drums!!!!

  • Oh my god, this man is AMAZING!!!! I never knew drums could be played that way.

  • he is a sexual maniac of drums

  • HA! Comment of the decade ;)

  • probably the most creative drummer who ever lived

  • Just discovering this man! OH MY OH MY!!!!

    what a genius!

  • This is PRECISELY why I love this website, I wasn't aware of this guy before now. The dude is awesome...

  • This is my black-drum-Jesus ;o)

    LOVE him ! :)´

  • Yeah, so class, respect Papa Jo Jones !!!

  • When not throwing ride cymbals at Charlie Parker's head....

  • LoL

  • gotta love his face impressions.great drummer

  • Haha - UR right! ;-) He is very cute :-)

    LOVE him too.

  • cha nadie sabe si este tipo no era dios? probablemente en la biblia se hayan confundido y dios era negro.

  • there may be other drummers at par with good ol phil, but no one is near as smooth and pimpin as this guy. i lay down my sticks to this man

  • The Supreme Drummer. So King-like on

his drum throne. Showing us how to be

musical. This is grand. PAPA JO!

  • Such cool expression, with excellent playing!!!

  • THE WORLD'S FINEST DRUMMER!!!

  • he knew the art of having a soft touch. to sound smoothe you had to be light.

  • Amazing! Too bad many of us drummers can´t even come close to what he was doing and many other Jazz greats of his era. Oh! well, at least I have a passion and some technique that...... well, I learned from a Jazz master

  • i think all of us drummers can learn from this man the simpleness and complexity and god sakes the showmanship it's so amazing

  • That press roll !

  • By playing so smoothly and with such feel and quietness, he caught the one thing that others try to catch by bashing their drums randomly : ATTENTION. top class...

  • just the look on his face is amazing.

then youve got his playing just makes it legendary

  • Papa Joe is one of the finest drummers ever. His movements are so fluid and natural. It's almost as if he and the drums are one. Some great drummers look like they are fighting the instrument, Papa Joe has this natural way of playing that is an art unto itself. Simply a beautiful way of playing. Beautiful.

  • recomment- best beat ever at 1:15 to 1:40

  • this guy is the fucking sex!

and his surname is same as mine :D

    i love his swing!

2:13 is the best beat ever!

and his facial expressions = ownage

oh and orgasm at 2:38 lol.

  • I agree! he didn't play drums, he made love to them!!! That's one of te things I try to achieve as a drummer an as a human being... doing whatever I do, play whatever I play with such a passion.

  • I much prefer listening to and watching drummers of this era than today's drummers.

All the drummers today sound alike( with the exception of a guy called Carl Palmer who is class A tops).

  • The hands of a surgeon!

  • A Natural Giant.

  • Papa Jo Jones is the man. He plays with so much more soul than most drummers. And he knows that silence is as important as sound.

  • he makes some really funny faces when he drums.

  • Papa Jo got more sounds out of clicking his drumsticks than most drummers on a huge kit.

  • BEAUTIFUL!!!

  • One of the all time greats!

  • Class !!

  • fuckn... wow.....

    soooooo quiet...

    soooo simply....

    yet soooo amazing.

  • il migliore del mondo, per la tecnica, le dinamiche, la fantasia e soprattutto per il sorriso smagliante e il sopracciglio ammiccante...!!!! Che tipo, c'è da morire..!

  • Wow, I'm just in awe of this. That's a level of creative skill that's mind bending.

  • a true master of drumming & entertainment..Papa Jo

  • What a beautiful and joyful drummer... Awesome creativity, great chops and inspiring dynamics. True love for the instrument. One of the greats.

  • Couldn't have said it better,cadaverr.

  • Oh yeah, you could. :] His charisma and love for the instrument are totally contagious. He always makes me feel good. Just by looking his expressions. The guy is a legend. :]

  • cadaverr - are you aware of a twin session with Buddy playing with Jo Jones? I'd like to have seen how their executions of rudimentary structures compare and countermeasure off one another!

  • I have the soundtrack of that. Rich does what he always does, explode with muscle and showing off his speed and rudimentary technique. Papa Jo responds with playing music on his drums causing Rich, at one point, to cry out "Oh God! I love what this man plays!"

  • dree51 - Are you trying to tell me you have a money substance visual of two of the greatest masters of the drums and you haven't told me?

    Shame on you ...lol!

Ok...can you tell me how or where I can get it? Is there a title to this masterpiece?

Your timely response is with great appreciation my Lord...

  • I got the soundtrack only off a university radio broadcast in New York City many years ago. Don't quote me on this, but I do think it is from the Tonight Show. I do not know what the year is. As i remember, the studio band is playing Old Man River.

  • I must hear this! hahaha...that's so awesome.

  • Y IS HE ALWAYS SMILING?

  • A true entertainer and showman.

  • he is the only jazz drummer i know of that used a floor tom on his left hand side...i think Keith moon was the other drummer that was unconventional in his approach to drumming.

buddy was too in his playing the bass drum with his stick.

other drummers wouldn't do that for fear of looking stupid...

  • That set up is not really that uncommon. Larry Mullen Jr. is one drummer who used it and there are others. Moon really didn't actually use that floor tom but rather kept it there for to hold hid drinks (he actually said this in a 1971 interview).

  • this kicks bonham in the face

  • comparing Jo Jones to John Bonham is just wrong. That's like comparing Wes Montgomery to Van Halen

  • I cannot understand how he can do the bit at 1:01. It's super human. The hardest thing to do when playing drums is to play really quitely and I just find this amazing to watch.

  • Jeez! That drum roll sounds like being in a pool full of marbles...better yet bb-s......AMAZING!!!!! I agree with Tyrus, "he loved that instrument"

  • Watching this always brings a smile to my face. He loved that instrument. True passion.

  • Boring to you only because you have no concept or comprehension of papa jo's style and substance!!! Anyone who thinks the way you do needs a course in drums 101!! Papa Jo started in the late 20's and was a contemporary of Webb, Krupa and was playing with Basie before Rich got any notoriety!! Now, you have completed your first class of drum101,so.....GO FUCK YOURSELF!!!

  • This is a Drumming Master. I am amazed at how he so effortlessly coaxes sounds from his kit. His sense of time and rhythm astound me. From another time - yet timeless. I am inspired.

  • Also, look at the way he smiles through the whole thing. That's not for show, he's having a great time, if anyone ever has.

  • pure magic!

  • love this solo! the dynamics make it feel so relaxing and interesting to listen to. i just found out about jo jones and he's amazing

  • You mean Neil's solo's,right?

  • That's what I'm talking about! You have to enjoy doing what you do and his face expresions says it all! Great skills and lots of creativity. Amazing drummer!

  • that's what I'm talking about! You have to enjoy doing what you do and his face expressions says it all. Great skills! Amazing drummer!

  • Beautiful roll

  • can anyone tell me where this video is from i would love to watch it from the source

  • One of THE BEST, if not THE BEST E-V-E-R!!!!

  • i love that he uses as many different parts of the drum and as many different techniques as he can rather than just hitting the skins. i really makes it that bit more special

  • gotta luv papa jo....hez so great...i luv his playfulness and calmness...but his virtoisity ....hez just amazing

  • Wow. that was amazing

  • One of the great soloists of all time--on any instrument. Awesome.

  • Watch his face....he plays so effortless. What a showman!

  • un groso

  • I was part of a drummers jam one time. Present were Max Roach, Elvin Jones and myself. When Papa Jo walked in, Elvin got up and wispered in my ear "Here comes the f---king master!" I think that said it all.

  • Jo Jones -- A Master Jazz drummer, and a really cool cat, daddy-o.

  • I love Jo Jones' style. He was as fluid as a flowing river. He had that old school show biz smile too. Definitely one of the most important drummers of the 20th Century.

  • That there is some envious control!
