@KyleVideoDesigns Prior to the diesel-era development of electrical power supplied by the locomotive for the train, passenger trains were heated by steam.
Once diesels replaced steam locomotives, steam had to be supplied either by a small boiler on the locomotive or by a boiler on a specially built car: the steam generator unit.
The Canadian National car on this train has been modified to provide electrical power for the train rather than steam.
From what I was told, the FRA certified the locomotive to operate in the last three weeks or so. It was short enough lead time that the museum wasn't able to give a whole lot of publicity in advance. Word did manage to get out via the internet, though. There were steam fans there from all over.
@Kleman09 Yes, I know, but the locomotive still ran for the Southern Railway. As long as it's under steam I'm happy! Kinda like that D&RGW K-27 up in Michigan running for the Huckleberry Railroad.
whats a steam generator unit

Was this steamer always oil-fired? I thought all Southern steamers were coal-fired since coal is plentiful in the South.

@KingofTomedy I believe that conversion to oil was part of the restoration process.

@TNtrainboy15 Southern ran in Illinois though, so it's alright... (4501, during her later years on the SOU, ran up here)
That was a sweet little engine.
