Why do people have to make negative comments? Obviously things were very different in the 60s and more women were housewives and nurses rather than doctors. People should stop picking on Barbie. Look at all the careers Barbie has had over the years (Barbie did eventually become a doctor). Barbie has been a great role model for little girls; she shows them that they can be whatever they want to be. *btw Barbie was an astronaut before Sally Ride* So she had some careers that were ahead of her time
lol i use to take barbies and duct tape them to bottle rockets and pretend she was an astronaut going into orbit but her rocket malfunctioned and blew up before she could leave the atmosphere....now that i think about it i played with all my toys like that....
They should have made Midge a fat chick. A lot of hot girls have a fat friend that they take with them when they go out clubbing because it makes the hot (or at least OK looking) girl look even better. I used to know a girl named Marcie who was cute, but nothing special. She always hung around with this girl named Sue who wasn't fat, but had eyes like Marty Feldman from "Young Frankenstein". Sue was there to make Marcie look better by comparison.
@TXRider Yep - gotta fulfill that need to be a housewife. Amazing how they felt back then that all women have this biological need to take care of a man and raise kids and fulfill their "wifely duties" (nudge nudge wink wink).
@LuvMadonna626 Please take note that Ken could fit in a lot of Barbie's clothes. I think that's how he avoided the draft. I think you could get a special edition "Draft Dodger Ken" that came with a passport, luggage and a plane ticket to Canada. My little sister had Barbie and all her female friends, but never wanted Ken because he was so fey. She just used my G.I. Joe's (and he was happy to do it too). I'd give him a three day pass so he could visit little sis's "Barbie World". Happy guy.
Cool Retromercial! I remember seeing this on TVLand when they first came out. TVLand is completley different now, I wish they'd bring the Retromercials back! And the Retro shows, by the way I love this commercial. I remember wanting these dolls so bad when I first saw this Retromercial, I was around 11. :p

you all are pathetic commenting to this negatively. Barbie and mattel is awesome. period. and if you don't think so, who cares? theres a reason why barbie is loved for half a century and its certainly because there are more barbie lovers than people like you!
The sillouette view of Barbie,Ken, and Midge reminds me of the "Eye of the Beholder" episode of the Twilight Zone. I love my Barbie dolls (my Ken and Midges too) Toys from the past were very inspiring. Thank you for posting this
and now sesne barbie and ken are divorced barbie is a raging slut lolz j/k ok i know it was all in poor taste but its true they announced that barbie and ken are divorced maybe thats why she took on so many jobs lolz
there is nothing wrong with being a nurse or a wife/bride. What are you a brain surgeon, fighter pilot? I hate this modern response because we DO need nurses and especially we need good stay at home mothers too!
Thank you so much for this comment! I thought everybody was out there hugging trees! There's nothing wrong with being a nurse, wife, bride, mommy, teacher, etc. We need women to show that it is still okay to do traditional roles, and not be looked at like we're crazy!
I'm having a flashback! I haven't seen those wristbands in over 40 years! Check out those cats-eyes glasses on "Nurse Barbie;" what a turn-on for "Dr. Ken." When "G.I. Joe" came along, my friends and I always used HIM as the "Bad-Boy Boyfriend" as he was bendable and could really play octopus to poor, defenseless Barbie!
i like the old barbie better than the new one. the new barbie is for preschoolers. i wish they still had the old barbie. and ken. and midge. and skipper.
i was talking to my aunt barb and we were talking about dolls and she said do i like midge and i was like who is midge and she said irt was her friend then she was like i guess im really old then but shes not
well it's kinda like this would you know of a modern day girl wants to buy a doll who dresses like her grandmother? it's actually on the media because of teen actress and singers potraying a sexy image that they want to copy cause they think is cool
Sometimes, just sometimes, Barbie thinks of graduation... and being under Ken as a nurse... a reasonable young lady wouldn't dare THINK of being Dr. Barbie! Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, NOOOO-HO-HO-HO-HOOOOOO....
It always ends the same... Barbie gets hitched. The bridal gown STAYS on her.
To be a young girl in 1963 was to believe your only career options were nurse, teacher, secretary, or stewardess. And you only did those until you got married...the true goal. Sad, but true.
There is nothing like the old Barbies. I've collected so many of the 60's & 70's Barbie & friends that my sister and I decided to open a vintage toy store in Bethel, CT. We both had so many old toys that our houses were bursting at the seams. Now we get to display the old MARX playsets, play with the wind-ups, and dress up the dolls, etc. etc. And we call it working...who could ask for a better job.
It's so funny how people are quick to criticize today's Barbie in comparison to the Barbies shown here. The only differences are in style and appearance. Underneath the older, more conservative clothing, are the exact same tools and concepts. Just a pretty doll that's fun to play with. How ridiculous we have people going as far as to call a plastic toy a "slut". Well I don't know what you guys used to do to your dolls :S
Barbie has a big influence on girls. She used to dress more modest and respectable. The clothes they are putting on Barbie now, portrays a "slut" image. It it HOW they are presenting her to young girls that some mothers don't appreciate - Bratz as well.
That's simply because today's modern society isn't as prudish and sexually repressed. More revealing clothing is fashionable, and that is reflected in a doll that represents fashion. You cannot blame Barbie for keeping up with the times, or anything or anyone else for that matter. Barbie represents a woman and not a child. If children cannot understand the difference between the two I suggest their mothers bother explaining a few things to them.
Barbie was a teenage fashion model. Not an adult woman.
The original Barbie line had class and taste.
The fabrics were quality. Silks, satins, taffettas. Real snaps and zippers. NO VELCRO.
Her creater, Ruth Handler told the designers to design as if they were making items for a real little person. Now, it is all over produced and cheaply made.
I agree, ShareBear. When she was made in Japan, the taste level was much higher then today.
i like barbies back then...i wasnt alive but...i still like it because then that means that you are the one who decides who barbie is...and you can change it anytime you want...that is so cool!
She dissapeared from the Barbie family, along woth her beau Allan, in the late sixties, only to re-emerge in the 80's and 90's for her and Allan's Grand Wedding. Two or three years ago, Mattel brought her back in the Happy Family series, where she is pregnant with her and Allan's second child.
So, Midge semi-retired from the public doll life, only to make rare reappearances. Must be a good life! I liked Barbie's cousin, Francie, the best. She looked like Maggie Evans on Dark Shadows to me!
