The 369th was in europe about a year, spending half that time doing labor or in non-combat areas. Instead cheer the 10,000 white flyers who died flying the B-17s, sitting ducks for the Luftwaffe.

But, while the site was nightmarish, he ALWAYS talked about the smell. and for his entire life, he never could rid himself of the memory of that stench. My grandfather served in WWII and I was exited when I intially saw this posted. The comments, however, were most disillusioning; not due to any information I had not been aware of but due almost entirely to the negativity of the posters. Why hate? Wasn't the war fought to eliminate one of the biggest hate-mongering empires of the 20h century? Incidentally (not that it should really matter), Keith David, the narrator, is African-American.

But by the time most of those guys got in the air, they had P-51s, far superior to the german messerchmidts. The vast majority of men who died for the country were the same as has always been true - white men.

Let's not go overboard about blacks in WWII. In europe and the pacific, it was almost always white men who did the fighting and dying. The men who stormed the beaches at Iwo Jima were WHITE. Blacks often were in behind the lines support roles.

Its the norm in my family.As for discrimination, the blacks are far more racist as a whole than any whites I know. I'm a realist and report things as they are truly are.
