much love and peace from holland

the music brings me back to surinam

    great country

  • WUK!

  • She starts it off so beautiful!

  • I was listening to Slacker Radio on my cell phone, very early this morning, as I was doing laundry when I heard this song for the first time in its entirety. This is a very beautiful song. Thumbs up to you Allison and everyone else who collaborated with you to get it out. Well done!

  • MUY BUENAS ROLAS LAS DE ALISON FELICIDADES

  • touching performance.

  • Lets not argue amongst ourselves. Its a beautiful song! Original and this one!!

  • just proves that all our Caribbean popular music are derivatives of the same root.

  • The original song is from Surinam !!!

  • I saw her in Trinidad a week ago during a fete. Such a beautiful woman!

  • yes she is a beautiful woman.

  • This tune is BIG. The original is BIGGER but Square one has a wonderful rendition that relayed it to the rest of the Caribbean. They have always given acknowledgment to the original authors of this song. Big up Suriname. Its amazing to see what displacement has produced...

  • This was popular while I was in high school. My American classmates would come up to me and say, "You're from Barbados, what is she saying in that song?" None of us knew but we all dance our asses off to it. Music transcends all!

  • How could the original be bigger when it was Square One that make the song the global hit it is? Say Faluma to a person not from Suriname and they will say Square One or Alison Hinds. Respect to Suriname, but Square One and Alison bust the song and make it a HIT worldwide

  • Listen to the originale from Suriname

  • qui chante l'original ?

  • I like the original as well. I thought is was from Africa. I went to Ghana and we played some calypso music during down time. About 20 kids from the village gathered around the house and were wining their butts off! LOL!

  • This is a language spoken by one of the maroon tribes in surinam. They are descendents from runaway slaves, and live deep in the surinam forest, and got the strongest ties with africa. Even thouhg they got no contact with african people.

I,m not a maroon myself, and this language goes very deep. I,ve been told that FAll i can pick out of the lyrics is:

  • FALUMA is a DOVE(the pronouncion is better in original video)What i can make out of it, is that some one killed a dove.INTRO she asks:

    MAMA A Y,E DU NOH? = mama(woman) did u do it?

some one said u did it.

BLAKA WEFI a ye e du nah?=BLACK WOMAN

and then she says that it wasn,t the animals because the were not there.Like:

    KAPASI deh dja noh

    BUFRU(bufalo) deh dja noh

PINGO(kinda wild pig) deh dja noh

    TIGRI(tiger) de dja noh

BIG UP SRANANG/CARIBBEAN!! MI BRADA +SISA MI LOB UNU.hope i helped

  • Soca is a genre that speaks to the cultural richness of the Caribbean People evident in the lyrical command of the local dialects incorporated into its songs, particularly "Fulama" by Soca Queen Alison Hinds

  • wheres suriname?

  • Suriname is a South-American an carribean nation, it was a dutch colony therefore we speak dutch and many other dialects and sranangtongo our creole language. Guyana is our western neighbour, French Guyana east, Brazil south and north is the atlantic ocean and carribean sea.

  • o ok. Thankx for that!!

  • next to guyana

  • Just read the video info ppl,

This is an old Suri folklore song that Sq1 heard when over there on tour, liked it n made their own cover version of it, you can even find a interview with Alison explaining how it came about right here on youtube..

Surinam loves Alison for spreading it worldwide,

get goosebumps whenever hearing it here in euro

    Sosso Lobi,

Sranan Srada n Sisa BIGUP unu srefi!!!

  • The language is one of many spoken in Surinam,

  • wut language there speakin (da song)

  • One of many languages spoken in surinam,

Probably one of the Maroon languages, Saramacaans or Djuka, could also be Kromanti, and old Akhan tongue from Ghana that has been preserved by the Maroons through the years, spoken by some Maroons in other parts of the caribians aswell..

  • ok :) But do u no da words in ENGLISH?? that she is singin

  • tHIS IS A ROPA tuuuuuuuuuuuuuuunne.

  • LUV THIS SONGG!!

  • straight up thats how music survives the ages, by being copied. Mind you copywright all creations from the start so none of this shit happens but still, if it didnt, half of the music and stories in the world wouldnt exist, infact history wouldnt exist.

  • Caribbean people need to quit hating, everyone in the Caribbean samples from each other. No one complains when Americans and Europeans sample our music and make millions, but we want to turn against each other scrambling for whatever crumb they decide to drop. Lets support each other, because no one else has our back.

  • Big up. Fianally someone talking sense.

  • @deeva5...Thank for saying this because it is SO TRUE!!

  • Suriname says thanx to square one!! check also the "original faluma" on youtube

  • Bajan Creole lol.OK The language is called Sranantongo. It's not a dialect anymore.

  • Oh, thanks!

  • Hi wwerulestna just educate yourself to the vibes of the caribbean and you will soon find out that FALUMA is one of the modern day classics coming from one of the greatest soca bands ever to grace the stage. They are called Square One and they are from Rihanna's hometown of Barbados.

  • Are you mental? This is one of the greatest songs of all time by Square One! Anyone who knows them, LOVES this song!!!!

  • Love her and this song. My all time favorite also.

  • this is one my favorite songs

  • This is one of my all time jams!!!

  • square 1!!!! cha memories boy!

  • Square One! gOOD oLE Time iN Da West Indies. That's Not Creole, What language is this?

  • dunno, could be sranan tongo, saramacan or some other language from suriname. if it is either of these it is a contact language which in linguistics is considered a creole language although not Creole (capital C) in the sense of the various french based contact languages spoken in several countries in the west indies and indian ocean.

  • It's a traditional folk song from Suriname that Alison hinds and the band learned down there in fact. Cheers.

  • no it's not. see post above. it's a creole dialect from Suriname, SouthAmerica. Song was made popular by a group called "Ai Sa Si". Alison liked it very much n rerecorded it. She did a awesome job by the way.

  • Does anyone have the translation for this song?

  • Alison is one of a kind. I hope she gets the recognition she deserves as a trailblazer.

  • She never ceases to amaze me I love Allison Hinds And square one!

  • Sweet times in Trinidad with these fabulous artistas! Keep em close to my heart cos they're wonderful, is why.
