  • why didn't she sing either of Mary Magdalene's songs instead?

  • i still love this preformance

  • she messed up

  • cool

  • This song is why she got kicked... :/

  • Hmm an interesting cover, though I would suggest knowing the lyrics by heart if you're gonna sing it. But I definitely enjoyed this!

  • AWESOMME

  • shitty, just shitty. im goin back to the original right now

  • YOU SUCK

  • She'd have won if she sang King Herod's Song.

  • She was amazing, should've been top 3 at least

  • She screwed up on the lyrics!!! Overall it's an ok version of one of Muical Theatre's Greats.

  • THIS IS A GREAT SONG!

  • this sucks. having a girl sing it is like taking the easy way out. this is nothing special.

  • Can't believe this song could be considered that controversial after all this time. Geez I'm an atheist and I have several songs from JCS and Godspell on albums and cds. Good music is good music, my beliefs are not threatened. All that said, she is no Carl Anderson and this song is demanding even for the excellent Idol band.

  • @milesalpha1 " Good music is good music, my beliefs are not threatened. " Exactly! :D

  • im thankful for this performance and her choosing this song cause im christian.

  • She should have won.

  • @telamon1267 yes...................

  • The most erroneous retelling I have ever come across

  • woooo!!. Nice PRS (looks like a tremonti se II) at 1:02....sorry, i just had to point it out.

  • Its a shame if people decide not to vote based on the fact that they think of this song as religious. Its from a musical based on the easter story but that doesn't mean that you have to be religious to like it.

Referring to a previous comment, there's no reason to think that this is sacrilegious, I for one am RC but in my opinion this song is from the view point of Judas, it is getting across how we can imagine he would have thought & ties in well as it focused a lot on the conflict of Judas.

  • The voice is excellent, Carl Anderson would be proud, but you could tell she wasn't insync with the backround singers. Not acceptable.

  • Whoever convinced her to sing this song instead of the one she'd previously chosen (and was it really ALW who convinced her?) obviously wanted her to get voted off. The show is rig.....er....manipulated, and they had an Irish girl sing "Superstar" out of context of the musical, someone who didn't understand the nuances of American culture and thought it would be acceptable. Hey, she rocked the song, but I knew she was out once I heard the song choice. They totally set her up.

  • Sorry guys but... who cares if she messed the lyrics? She is now the lead singer of a f*cking amazing band! Like to see you all try it :)

  • @HeartOfStone100 what band?

    TELL ME!!!!

  • @blingblingshineshine it is not a band it is from jesus christ superstar

  • Would have been good if she remembered the lyrics.

  • she is amazing! not her week 2 go home

  • yep. it's bs about the song choice but AI does appeal to middle america and a lot of midwest type born again xtians would view the song as sacreligious. They've probably never even seen the musical either.

  • What a voice *.*

  • she killed it

  • I think this girl can really sing. I like how she doesn't try to sing with an R&B style like basically every contestant does. She has a nice rock voice.

  • Dude no, can't you tell that she's not feeling the song

  • i love this song, but it would've been interesting if she did gethsemane.

  • She was an amazing singer, beautiful and a great personality to match, i was stunned when she was voted off,

  • word to the wise: when you sing a live performance, make sure it's a song where you actually know the right words.

    This is awful.

  • @degownsyoux EXCATLY THANK YOU!!!

  • @degownsyoux When someone listens to the original soundtrack and hears the unbelieveable talent of Carl Anderson, they get so inspired and want to sing it. Unfortunately there are very, very few people on earth that can sing this song as well as he did. This girl is not one of them and thus it spoils it for her, us and the song in general. Word to the wise: When competing in a competition like this, think about the core audience and voters and what THEY like

  • @tryandlisten so true!

  • Check out her new band We Are The Fallen they're AMAZING! =D <3

  • This was SO her best performance. America messed up big time.

  • @TheMaskedDouche Yes she is beautiful and talented.

  • hey babe, you are sexy, and the musical is n1 , respect -)

  • i love the song, and im glad she sang a "showtune", but she wasnt that good. no offense to her, it just wasnt a good song choice for her, and not because of religion. she just cant sing it.

  • It's sad that she got voted off for singing a religious song.

  • this was my favorite performance from her. can't belive she got voted off after that

  • not that great. i don't think the song choice was bad. i would like to hear more 'heaven on their minds' love that song. in fact, there are so many from that play.

  • this woman is way too good for this show, I saw her live w/ We are the Fallen, I couldnt believe she had been on this show, she is really really good

  • @shapeofabee I am Jealous. I would love to see We are the Fallen. Carly is no Amy Lee but nobody is. She is a great choice to be the bands vocalist.

  • i thought it kinda sucked, she messed up a lot of words.

  • She lost cause she cheated. She had a record deal under her maiden name in her home country. Her album did not sell at all cause it was released the week of 9-11-2001. She was dropped from her label. She got married to an american, became a citizen. Tried out under her new name and citizenship. Once it was discovered by fans, they immediately voted her off

  • @drugssuck1991

This was known WAY before this performance. Adam Lambert had put out a record before AI too. Didnt stop him from finishing second.

  • @drugssuck1991 her record deal was talked about before we even made it to the finals. A lot of AI people have albums out prior to idol, you just can't CURRENTLY be in recording contract. Brooke White had an album, David Cook as well.. Adam Lambert... I'm sure quite a few others. I think maybe you might be reading a bit more into this than is necessary. I thought it was unfair to start with, but I eventually grew to really like her despite the whole.. "she had her shot" mentality.

  • She had to win that season not the idiot of David Cook!!!

  • By far the best contestant EVER! I love her. Too bad they didn't have the save by that season =(

  • actually they would have saved michael johns.....she still would have been gone....but she was definately worth top 4 material that year!

  • Carly was one of the best finalists of any season. She should have been Top 3, at least. Same goes for Michael Johns.

  • if the Judges save was around her season, it would've been used on her.

  • @heyricosuave she's good, but I think they would have used it for Michael Johns when he was elimated before Carly did. :)

  • I still can't get around the fact that she lost that week. It's disgusting!

  • and to think she LOST in this performance. people hav no good taste in music

  • it is so stupid how she got voted off because she sang a fricking song about jesus being superstar!! stupid! this girl rocks!! every once in a while AI has amazing singers, and she's definitely one of them! loooosers!

  • Agreed. Smithson should've finished higher this year, if not won the entire competition!

  • First time I've ever seen/heard a female play Judas! Her voice is good!! I wish she'd kept the original lyrics more intact, but overall I like this.

  • god carly's good. She was my fave till she got voted off then i was in shock for a week then my new fave danny got voted off then my new fave alison got voted off. But at least adam freaking lambert didnt win. I hate him so much- he cant sing. He can scream. Why isn't he in slipknot? :)

  • @ Tak:

why r u talking about two different seasons? carly was season 7. those other people were season 8. and allison got voted off before danny. plus, adam never screams. he can just hit some really high notes. im not gonna call him my fave singer cuz hes not (hes my grandmas favorite singer), but if he couldnt sing he wouldve neveer even made it past auditions. think about that one.

  • its awful

  • omg! THIS was the song i was thinking about! i remembered she did some song and i really liked how she did it and THIS WAS IT!!!

im surprised she didnt get a record deal even if she only made it to the final 6. i remember her being the best girl.

  • @BrickByBoringBrick7 she did get a record deal, universal records picked her up, and now she plays with the band of evanescence..or however ya spell it..:)

  • yeah, i found that out later that same day. i like the song she did with her new band We Are the Fallen, Bury Me Alive. but thanks for the info anyway!

  • Carly and Syesha were the best that night! Bottom2.... US nuts!

  • she sang it wrong

  • Theere had to be some sort of glitch with the voting. There is no way she could have went home after that performance. She was the very best out of the girls in season 7.

  • i understand people calling her a plant, but i just got shivers. remembering this season, she knocks them all out of the park. glad she'll be back with we are the fallen.

  • is she a Christian?

  • I don't understand how she didn't get at least 3rd place. I couldn't take that they kicked her out when she set the standard SO high for the next seasons.

  • She has a really good voice, but this song has been and always will be meant for Carl Anderson to sing. RIP. <3

  • My thoughts exactly. It just doesn't look right when not performed by a guy in a 70's disco jumpsuit.

  • Thank you! I'm not the only one who thinks that.

Also, I think there should be some backup singers in the background with silver afros.

  • And where's the crane bearing the giant silver star?

  • American Idol, your pants are surely on the ground now. And you are, indeed, looking quite like a fool with your pants on the ground.

  • Not to mention their legs are probably quite cold.

  • The gold in their mouth is not impressing ANYONE, and certainly neither is their hat, that is turned sideways.

  • Ten dollars says that it's fool's gold.

  • Oh ho ho, I think you're right.

  • Why thank you!

  • @SheepasaurusRex hahahaha yesssss! i'm assuming you are referring to the general :P

  • I sure am.

  • i think american idol season 7 are the best, there are David Archuleta,David cook, Brook White,Carly,syesha... great performance with their character

  • @nayorno WTF!?!?

brooke white cant even fuckin sing!

  • what? if she can not sing then she would not pass the audition :)

i think it's about your taste of music... if you like folk you will like brooke white, if you like rock you will like david cook, if you like pop then you like archie...

  • Ive though that too, but no matter what genre u can stil admire the timbre or beauty in someones voice.

I see it in all of em except Jason corn rolls, and brooke white...and even though i dont like kristy she has a good voice....:)

  • damn. simply amazing.

  • i could not beleive she went home after this week she was a brilliant perfomer should of went to the top 2 or even won but the main thing is that shes in a band and that their making an album wats coming out soon but carly omg u always blow me away ur my idol same wif u kristy

  • this was an amazing performance, i think a lot of stupid people thought it was about religion and therefore didn't vote for her

  • @redhedbedhed to the people who didn't vote for her cuz it was religious i say, you don't have to believe in religion to accually like the songs from jesus christ superstar, its a shit load better than what they play on the radio nowadays

  • @redhedbedhed Youre right. Not because a song as Jesus in it means it's religious. It's awesome/

  • @redhedbedhed Well, the song itself is about religion. It's off of Jesus Christ Superstar, one of the most amazing musical depictions of Jesus' life. The song itself is about Judas wondering of Jesus if he really was the son of God and all that jazz.

  • @redhedbedhed thats because the song is about religion

  • @redhedbedhed which is funny cause if any of those non religious people actually watched jesus Christ superstar they woudl realize it really isnt that religious...lmao

  • @redhedbedhed

Even if it is about religion who cares? If its a good song its a good song and if its a good performance its a good performance and thats all there is to it . I am wondering what the message of this song is though. Is the writer saying they don't understand why jesus died on the cross? Because that can be clearly explained... Or is it another message, about how Christ's origional message gets lost in the church? I don't know.

  • @SpatulaofDestiny1

This song is about why he made the choices he did, and the key part is about why did he chose that time. Imagine how many more people would believe if Jesus' miracles were caught on tape today. It focuses on the idea that if Jesus were to have come in modern times, he would be the equivalent of a “superstar”. The show itself is about looking at Jesus not as a god, but as a man struggling to do what he believes is right in the face of enormous opposition.

  • @redhedbedhed There's that and the fact she messed around with the tempo, the melody and lyrics and seems to have great trouble singing in tune but apart from that a stellar performance...

  • @redhedbedhed last time i checked the vast majority of the country is christian let alone religious

  • @redhedbedhed

Yep, I think this song is still too controversial after all these years & did her in, regarding her ratings etc. So unfortunate. She's amazing! But she'll do well in some other arena for sure!!!

  • @redhedbedhed well im jewish and i still love this, so nobody should really be offended, its a musical song, they have no deep meaning.

  • I couldn't believe she wen't home after this.

  • me either :( i was shocked i wanted her to win so badly :(

  • She messed up the lyrics in the chorus, but the performace is so electrifying I don't care. Shame she was eliminated because of song choice. A lot of people think the song is sacrilige. Bogus, really. It' from the point o Judas and he is simply wondermog at amazement at Jesus and his brave choices.

  • may i know where she screwd up? dont seem to notice

  • She's awesome, I love her new band

  • The best performance ever on American Idol.

  • How is this the best performance if she left the next night, AND she forgot the lyrics?

  • OfficialTheresaCrall -

I watched American Idol from the beginning. It is MY opinion that this is the best performance ever on the show. I didn't memorize the lyrics so I could care less if she messed up the lyrics. Her voice is amazing. She is amazing. So what if she got the boot the next night? Reuben was NEVER this good!!!

  • Yeah, but, what about Kelly Clarkson? I mean, compare this to "Natural Woman."

  • i feel that way about katharine mcphee's i have nothing. but, we all know both Kat and Carly were INCREDIBLY robbed. screw those idol producers.

  • she was my favorite.. I actually thought that brooke was going home that week..

  • Alone? I was talking about her version of Crazy on You. What about that???

  • It took me a second to figure out how I wanted to write this: You can tell she really liked this song, just like Crazy on you, and in my opinion, when she picks a song that she REALLY likes, she sings better than anyone in the HISTORY of AI

  • I agree. Carly is one of a kind. You can really tell she loves Heart...that version of Alone gave me the chills

  • I just viewed the 1973 version in comparison to this. I think what is missing for me is the anger in the question and the sense that it's a real question. She is a great singer who was jamming in this performance, but doesn't seem to get the song.

  • She tried angry presentations on a few other songs, namely, Show Must Go On and Total Eclipse of the Heart and Simon shat all over her. So she went for an upbeat show tune type presentation here. Honestly, I can't blame her but her Idol number was up.

  • Yeah angry for her equaled awkward.

  • I remember hearing her in dublin years ago and she was amazing ,didnt even need a mike and this was open air

  • in that week, i really thought shes safe.

  • i was totally shocked when she got eliminated!

  • Hmmm, very good indeed. Maybe better than that with the right words.

  • LOVE HER!!!

  • ahhahaha she screwed up the words completely, like in the chorus where she said superstar twice instead of jesus christ x2, then jesus christ superstar ahhahahahhha

  • You constitute one line slip up as a complete screw up?

That's logic in an entirely new form, right there.

  • ONE SLIP UP? Um, look at the lyrics, she messed them up at least 4 times. Seriously, just awful.

And she just IS a complete screw up. Heard of her lately, besides her band that isn't even famous? I haven't.

  • Comment removed

  • Nice one. See, at least I gave proof to my reasons why she screwed up, but, whatever...

  • OfficialTheresaCrall -

Who cares what you think. I'm not watching American Idol anymore anyway.

Ellen is the "Judge" for Christsake, so is Posh Spice. I give no credence to what these people think. Also, many of the "winners" ended up going nowhere fast. You shouldn't take this show so seriously, OfficialTheresaCrall. It's more of a popularity contest than a singing contest. However,Carly Smithson has a lot a fans who remember her. Why the hell do YOU care?? Jealous much?

  • Jealous of what? Her lack of fame? Obviously you take the show WAY more seriously than me, because you're actually getting angry over it. And would you stop pasting my name into your comments? It's creeping me out!

  • Comment removed

  • Stalking? Did I ask you to reply to me? No, I don't think I did. And I really don't care whether you typed in my name, or pasted it. Do you even know the definition of "stalking?" Here;

Stalk: the act of following prey stealthily.

How did I follow you? That made no sense, and the caps weren't necessary. Like I said before, you're getting really really mad over my opinion. I'm a 14 year old girl laughing at your lack of spelling/grammar skills. Someone needs to get a life, and it's not me.

  • By the way, I don't care if I replied to your comment first, you didn't need to come back here and start a fight with a little girl.

  • OfficialTheresaCrall -

I'm not stupid, little girl. Frank Zappa? Weird Al? I read your screen page. You're in your 40's, honey and maybe in your 50's and gayer than Bruno. Not that I care. Get out of the closet and be loud and proud. Believe it or not, I don't have a spell check button on my computer and I am not about to look up words in the dictionary to impress you. Can I spell? No. Am I stupid? I would be if I really thought you were a 14 year old girl.

  • Sorry I listen to music. Apparently you didn't look at my videos - there's a video of me on there. I mean, first you call me a little girl, then say I'm 40-50? I don't really want to prove that I'm 14, because...I am, and I'd have a hard time doing so. Like I said, I really don't care about you, or what you think, so please leave me alone and don't try to write back trying to look smart and/or cool. KNTHX. ;)

  • Oh yeah, and, how am I "gayer than Bruno?" That also makes no sense, considering the fact that he's a fictional character, and in real life, he's married. To a woman. Yeah, and I don't see how you would come to that conclusion from my Youtube page. And I'm pretty sure it has my age on there, as well, so, you're not ""funny" nor "cool" for making up my age and sexual orientation. That's just your "toatalee awusum" comeback because you have nothing to say to me. HA!

  • Perhaps you should waste less of your childhood slagging off someone who will never read your comments, and instead spend your time doing something valuable with your time.

I'm sure you have something better to do - read a book, or go out with friends. Or did all of your friends leave when you started on a Carly Smithson rant?

  • Ok, whoever you are...how about you leave me alone? I really don't want to have to keep giving this video views. And besides, you can waste your time writing a comment back if you really want to, but I'm not coming back to reply.

  • She's going to be in the band The Fallen with Ben Moody and other ex Evanescence members :) :) :) can't wait to hear the album

  • she should won! she can sing really good! she is awsome!

  • I find myself slightly amused and mincing about in the gay British male tradition.

  • Not bad-the best song from the musical!

  • she really naild this song

  • i hated how she got eliminated after this like the next day

  • Gurlfriend blew it out of the water only to face the typically UNenthusiastic judges (who I always believed had an ax to grind) with Carly. They knew she was the real deal and was too damn good for this talent show anyway.

  • They're just pissy with her because she's a foreigner, I swear. She is awesome.

  • I LOVED HERR!!!!!!!!!

  • Amazing song.

  • this was the only performance i remembered 5 months after the AI ended. like i didn't even remembered archuleta's performances i remembered his audition and nothing else after that they were all forgettable to me. dont take that the wrong way either! i am a huge archuleta fan just check out my channel, but this one really hit me, most of archuleta's performances were ballads.

  • EmilyLandherr -

I agree 100%. It's one of the best performances I've ever seen on any American Idol eposide. I wish she won.

I think she had the most talent. Like you,

    I never forget this performance.

  • I remember it and want to watch it because it is GOOD! Most of the Idol performance I remember over time are the laugh out loud train wrecks that this show does so well. Carly's performances are a totally different breed of animal.

  • see I have to disagree, though not religious at all, JCSS is my favorite musical, and Judas is my dream role. I feel she didn't do a 'great' job. Not to mention the music wasn't amazing and she didn't do the words correctly. Just my opinion, its not even cause she's a girl, the notes she sings are to low for this song

  • this was her best performance...america you pittied brooke too much..brooke or jason should've left.they don't surprise us with their performance.and even archuleta. but carly and david are pure originals and have very unique voices.

  • I'm a huge musical theatre fan, and this was my favorite performance from Broadway week.

  • Nope
