They were the true alternative to GNR, who had taken over the AOR set, and clearly were still very much an underground band who just happened to be on a major label. I think the closest to JA in '88 that we've seen since then would have to be TOOL with the release of AEnima in '96. But, sadly, there's been nothing like either since. Still waiting...

Natural Born Killers was released about 6 or 7 years after Nothing's Shocking came out in 1988. Ted Bundy did just admit it (dozens of murders) in 1989, shortly before he was executed.
