  • LOOK it clearly says 40 Knots of WIND!!!

  • Im saying 20 knots.. no way that is 40!

  • 25 kts perhaps...

  • no way in hell that is 40 kts, 40 kts in that boat with those rags up your eyes would be bleeding and you would spend most of your time on your side, perhaps 20 gusting 25, nice breeze....

  • 15 knots boat speed is impossible for a boat like that. I'm guessing this is a 30 ft boat. The water line will then be something like 25 ft (7.5 m). The theoretical max. hull speed would be 2.42*sqrt 7.5 = 6.6 knts. It could pick up some speed when surfing off a wave, but would never exceed 8 knots. Never.

  • @multitalent8 it looks like an express 37 to me, which would explain the title express sailing, and 37s are very fast boats- they can hit 12 knots surfing downwind in under 20 knots of breeze, and they're also very light, so extended planing especially in 40 kn of wind would not surprise me at all.

  • @drummerboy202 you may be right, but it seems a 26 ft Marieholm is overtaking this boat (0:52 behind; 1:17 in front). I know for a fact that a Marieholm will not plane and will therefore not exceed its theoretical hull speed (6 knts) by much.

  • @multitalent8 Turns out it's my mistake, he's in an elan express not an express 37- much smaller boat, and one i'm not familiar with, so you're probably right about his speed.

  • @multitalent8 that makes no sense to me. obviously there are sailboats in offshore races going into the 20 kts range. are the racers a planing hull? somehow people clearly make speeds far greater that 6.6kts.

  • @finujuve not entirely true. I've been out in fjs in 45 knots and its wet and scary but didnt break the boat.

  • sailing is boring. tryed it once on a sailboat in san diego. Hoist the jib, or jib the sail, or sale the mast or whatever. how bout "gimme a beer and mash the gas" I love my big block and thru haul exhaust!!!! 20 gallon of gas an hour, Now thats doing my part for the economy!!

  • If the sail isnt trimed as normal.....then it can work. Easier for the person sailing...

  • its windy but not 40 kts

  • 16-19m/s which it says in the begining of video, sounds exactly right. It's something like 30-38 knots. Those who say 20 knots or less are either joking, talking about m/s or, perhaps most likely, boats speed :). I was about a year a go in very similar conditions with a similar size boat (First 31.7) and it looked like that (also in the video which I took in downwind). Other conditions have big impact on wave shape and size too: water deph, ocean coast/sea gulf..etc.

  • 40knts sailing downwind and having only not reefed mainsail??????

  • O yes it is Elan Express

  • 20 knots.

  • 40 knots???? What a load of crap.

  • that is NOT 40 knots.....

  • LoL, 40 knots... The water surface doesnt show wind is blowing that speed. 40 knots of wind and full main ? Huh.

  • Hasn't a clue. Why would you sail down-wind with main only. This guy is "backward" in mre ways han one. His anemometer and log are as crazy as he is

  • .. With a boat of that size and 40 knot winds, a spinnaker could damage the boat and the people on it..

  • Superb downwind sailing.

    Such days are few.

Oil that sqeaky block : it'll drive you nuts.

  • I call BS on the wind speed.

  • Wow you guys should read! Its 40 knots of wind; the boat is going 15... It says it in the info wow

  • It looks downwind - which always feels and looks slower than you're really going. But what's up with the solo main? Was this a competition requirement? Serious gybe risk. Yikes!

  • 40knots? impossible

  • I guess that it was blowing a bit but 40 knots ?? Not really looks that way ;)

  • LMAO so many comments about dat it obviously not 40knots. id lik 2 added mine, no way is dat 40knots and i doubt ur doin 15knots

  • I didn't think idiots who cant type or spell would be attracted to sailing. I guess I was wrong. Your ubiquitous influence is depressing.

  • get a life, you sado. i could bet i ve got more experience than you/most internet sailors, the majority who never go out.

  • 20 or 40 kts is not important; it's really dangerous sail downwind with only mainsail. A Jib or a Genoa is the best and fastest solution in strong downwind offshore sailing: no uncontrolled gybe risk, no hard rudder, easy to depower and enpower sailing as well.

  • 40 knots wind....?

  • Why not to sail with a spinnaker, 25 or 40 kts it's ideal ?

  • mentirooooooooooooooooso..............rs

  • 40-kts my ass.. That's more like 25 knots..

  • 25? more like 10 knots

  • I think it's like eighty knots!

  • According to SMHI the wind this day was up to 40 knots in this area. That was the obervations that day, not my own idea.

  • no way that's 40 kts.

  • 15 knots , boat would go in 40

  • no way 40, max 15-18, the waves even aren't big

  • Gybe on a main only, shouldn't be anything to worry about and if you just yourself it'll be easier to handle, than all that faffing about with winches and sheets[ yawn]

Buy some digital instruments so you know for sure what speed ,wind, direction ,your doing

Cos i have to admit it doesnt look like a 40knt wind,i mean thats a force 8,the conditions looked about force 5 ,tops.

    ----------------------------------------------------

Sod it all,get the reaching spinnaker out :)

  • Very nice sailing conditions. But the tiller was almost running out of movement, giving danger of a broach. Mainsail alone is a very unbalanced rig for downwind running, and it might be better to reef the mainsail and set a jib or staysail wing-and-wing. I think you have set up a preventer, but I am not sure if it is strong enough to prevent a gybe.

  • This is 12-14 knots, not more!!

  • these are NEVER 40 knots

  • doesn't seem like 40 knots of wind. seems like the swells and waves would be more extreme at 40 knots. I've been out in 40 knots and this seems more like 25=30.

    nice video though!

  • O.o 40 knots??? NEVER i would even go faste with my 7.0 m² sail

i can't believe that you say that you are going 40 knots...it's just not wright mate

  • the pisa-study already showed that reading comprehension is a problem for germans, you don't have to proof it ;).

He's going up to 12 knots, the wind is 40 knots

  • I proved it, too :P 15 knots :D

  • 40 kts my ass

  • Nice vid - not 40 knots though. More like 25 - 28 knots. I think your anemometer needs calibrating...

  • well that's a good 6, small 7, not 40 kn , 40 km/h ok

  • Not 40, looks like fun though.

  • no way in hell thats 40 knots

  • The wind is 40 knots the speed is 15 knots

  • ok, i see, me dumass, sorry.

  • not 40 knots and id be shocked if that pos went over 10

  • @sbrian28 that's the Baltic sea I suppose, looks adequate enough to be 40kn, easy

  • 40/2

  • I'd be willing to give in the 20's, but no 40 You wouldn't have a full main up in 40!

  • you`r right mate...i have been in some 40s...definitely it was more nailing than what we see here.....maybe it was 40, and this gentlemans didn`t have time to make sails smaller..so, in that case, what we watch is seconds before they took all rig down..lol...nice video, would be nice to remove 40knots title..

  • if this is 40knot, what we see is seconds before they put the rig down..hahahaha..

  • hehe yes yes 40 ktn maybe 6-8 :)
