Oh gosh he's so heartbroken it's so sad, Mycroft was suppose to protect him, he was his little brother...
Does anyone else think that Mycroft had a big part in making Sherlock the way he is?,
That scene in ASiB at the end with Mycroft and John when he talks about Sherlocks heart, and he says he wanted to be a pirate, for me that is the saddest scene in the whole series, how innocent and happy Sherlock once was, the look on Mycrofts face after he said that to John just breaks my heart, realising
aw Mycroft :( Mark does brilliantly in this scene he looks utterly heartbroken that he has just fed Sherlock to the lions :( he never meant to to destroy Sherlock you can tell from this scene that he never wanted that, but he did what he did out of stupidity not cruelty so i forgive him lol (but if Sherlock was really dead, i would of hunted him down XD)
Have to say, this scene completely flips their very first meeting on its head; John now has the upper hand, and Mycroft is the uncomfortable one. And just seeing how protective John is of Sherlock is just SEXY.
i really think that despite it all---the rivalry, this past between them---sherlock and mycroft really care for one another. it's especially apparent from mycroft's side: whenever sherlock is in danger of using drugs again, mycroft is on the alert. (and ii still think it's darkly funny that mycroft abducts john every time he wants to know how sherlock is doing.)
The music, when John walks away... Jesus, It's just so chilling. When I look at this scene after seeing the whole episode, It's like the music included everything, what we and John should prepare for. All these things John doesn't know and what are going to happen.
Mycroft: "John... I'm sorry." And then John's laugh, like it means... all. Despair, anger, fear and many questions, why? Why his best friend and the best man...
Suddenly I understand the relationship between the two brother's so much more. This is where the animosity between the two brothers comes from. The positions they've taken in life. They are incompatible. The man who seeks the security of Britain and the man who searches for the truth. They will use each other for their own benefit but they will also ruin each other if its to reach their goals. They probably both saw this coming and that's why Sherlock doesn't go after Myrcoft.
i love this Mycroft, this scene shows how similar to Sherlock he really is. they are both very intelligent but can be so ignorant at the same time. Sherlock didnt even know Lestrades first name was greg, Mycroft did'nt thin blabing to a murdering criminal would be a big problem. i dont think we should all hate Mycroft, he made a mistake but so do Sherlock and John. he is only human, (love John in this scene)
I have a sneaky feeling that Mycroft already knew what was going to happen. Sherlock didn't tell him his plan though because Molly was the only one he trusted enough to help plan it. Sherlock needed to keep John safe so of course he wouldn't tell him
@AngedeMystere Mycroft didn't say that Moriarty actually gave up the code, he just said that he was the only one who could get Moriarty to talk even a little bit. I think Mycroft still believes the code exists at this point but doesn't have it.
When Mycroft told John to tell Sherlock he was sorry, I was all like 'No, Mycroft, YOU will tell Sherlock you're sorry and you better pray to God he'll forgive you.'
I can't hate Mycroft forever, though, and when people people talk about John's pain, I always give a little thought to Mycroft and how he feels about his brother's death.
@alexandrakl he gave him information about Sherlock's life to lure him into reveling the computer code.Moriarty was obsessed with Sherlock and he-supposedly-opened up only to Mycroft when he talked about his brother. As it turned out,Moriarty did it on purpose.
You know what? I was just thinking about fault and, yes, part of it is Mycroft's fault because he blabbed off to Moriarty, but then I realized that partial fault like that can go elsewhere, too. It's sort of Lestrade's fault, because he didn't just keep his mouth shut and suspicions out of the picture. It's sort of John's fault, because he- through his blog- attracted all that media attention to Sherlock in the first place.
@BlackPhoenix00280 Yet, surely the most 'fault' would be attributed to the man himself? Sherlock is aware that he condescends the way Superman can fly. He's aware of this and really it amuses him. It may be his way, but surely a man of such considerable talents can figure out a way towards self-improvement, if not self-restraint?
I really don't know how to feel about Mycroft. On the one hand, he obviously cares a lot about Sherlock and John, even if he doesn't show it. But on the other hand, he is the most older siblingy older sibling ever. I don't think he could admit Sherlock might know better for all the umbrellas in England.
@bumshka21 I have read some, but even so I'm not sure whether I love Mycroft or hate him. Is there a particular story that tells us more about their relationship? I've read the Bruce-Partington Plans story, and the Empty House, where Mycroft makes appearances.
@completeidiot I will have to get back to you in a week or so. For now, I haven't read the stories in nearly ten years and am only just catching up on them again in the last few days! Or, given the popularity of the show (30% of UK homes w/ a t.v. on tune in), I've no doubt you'd be able to find something akin to YorkNotes online with no more than 15min of searching & skimming.
@bumshka21 Not really, since ACD's canon doesn't include this story the way it played out. Mycroft and Sherlock's relationship was much closer in the canon.
@BrownieWaltz I disagree. Although you're correct that the story in the show is more narrow, the books will give a viewer a greater 'background' if you will. Its analogous to the observation vs seeing dichotomy they draw on in the show. In this case, I think 'CompleteIdiot' would benefit from knowing some of the source material. Since, after all, its not just insights between the two protagonists that are relevant for his assessment.
@bumshka21 The books barely even talk about Mycroft at all, and when they do, they give very little familial background on Sherlock or his brother.
I actually think this show goes more into the Sherlock/Mycroft relationship. Which is what sets it apart from others, and why I think I like it the most.
But canon doesn't do much in the way of giving personal details, family details, or motivations for either brother.
@BrownieWaltz Again, I agree on the amount that the books do and don't go into things. But ultimately its the inspiration for what the writers are drawing from. If only of an outline from the interactions, I'm fairly certain a reader will get a sense of the 'between the lines' dynamic that ACD aspired towards and what has or hasn't gone over to the show.
The reason this is helpful is because then the viewer can compare what is found in ACD and what is if not invention then interpretation.

One of the most emotional scenes of the hole series.
Mycrofts look, when he says "Tell him, would you?" made me cry immediatly.

Oh god. You can see Mycroft die a little bit inside as John talks.. When he realises exactly what he's done. It's heartbreaking.

What really puzzles me is Mycroft should know by now that the code Moriarty gave him is worthless. Maybe he just doesn't have the heart to tell John.

This is the only proof Watson needs to believe in Sherlock. His brother. He can confirm his brother is not a fraud, a least to John.

And it's really mostly Sherlock's fault, for playing the game with Moriarty in the first place, instead of just shooting him when he had the chance.

@completeidiot The Conan Doyle stories are all really short. It'll help if you read one or two since it'll give greater depth to Mycroft's actions.
