I think wearing clothes that are different than what others wear is cool, so long as you are wearing them because you like them, and it's not just because you are trying to be different. If you certain clothes just to be different, your stupid.

Hipsters are preserving it by listening to old/experimental artists, and this leads to them forming new bands of their own. Japandroids for example can be considered a hipster band, and they were inspired by Fugazi's DIY ethic and set up their shows completely on their own, and therefore had shows without any corporate influence. And they made damn good music while doing it.
After reading this, i got to listen the album "Post-Nothing".. i had never heard of them before, and, as a sound engineer, it's a reaaly stupid and bad example for "experimental" music... get to listen Henry Cow, Mr Bungle, Ulver or Fantômas, that's experimental.... Japandroid sounds like a really MAINSTREAM punk - Crossover thrash band... it's nothing that hasn't done before.

Point to one mainstream band with shoegaze level of distorted guitars and makes such massive sound. Ofc, The Velvet Underground, Sonic Youth, Glenn Branca and to some degree Japanther would be better examples, but to me it was very different as I had not seen it before, tell me, where have you seen what´s been described above in the mainstream? It may not be experimental, innovative.
@fenixdeejay And it´s experimental as far as the underground scene goes, as it´s heavily rooted in punk, I see anything that differs from the normal format, as experimental and different, it may be a little ideosyncrasy, but that´s just me. Ofc, when you listen to prog, experimental is a different thing as prog merged out of psychedelic to push to artistic boundaries. I´ll take my pork pie hat off to you good sir :)

and also, american apparel is awesome cause they make their clothes in america. i personally hate goodwill because it's a fucking scam. their whole business model is taking free donations and free labor from people on probation. and then they get a tax- ride-off. fuck that! and yeah i hate starbucks. if you go to starbucks you are ruining your community because the money leaves it and gets sent away to some mysterious owner.

I'm not sure if anyone actually likes Walmart or not, but the reality is that there isn't much choice when you're for-real poor rather than mimicking the working class of a bygone era out of a sense of irony.

This was a well-said description of hipster. I especially liked how someone mentioned the connection between hippies and hipsters. I wouldn't necessarily say they are different than MODERN hippies, such as the ones you see hanging around universities such as Berkley, but they are in fact not like the ones from the sixties.
