Russell was a very smart player well schooled in the game. He had a mental dossier on just about all players he confronted: their weak spots, shooting habits, etc. He could high jump 6'9", so a great athlete with great timing. He blocked numerous shots, and tipped it most times to his teammates. So good at blocking that players missed shots looking for him. A great rebounder and wiz at the outlet fast-break pass. His defensive abilities broke up many plays. A master at psyching out opponents.
@Sovnarkom , Bird had decent defensive skills, just not man on man. He could average 2 steals per game. Thats his one weakness. Above the rim game? What does that even mean, and who cares? You don't need to get that high to either rebound or shoot. Name one player besides Jordan that doesn't have some weakness. russell? great rebounder, average scorer, great defenseive player, not the greatest passer. same thing for Wilt, poor FT shooter, decent passer...etc. P.S. Bird made 2nd team defense.
@coffeecat73 He was a good team defense player, that's why I singled him out specifically as lacking in "man on man" skills. Everyone has weaknesses of coarse but when you're crowning someone as the greatest all around player, you have to pick players who have as few holes in their game as possible. Bill Russell was actually #2 in assists on his team in all of his 13 NBA seasons and he accomplished that on a team with 4 hall of fame guards - possibly #1 passer as a center in history.
@coffeecat73 As for the importance of above the rim play, it's another tool in a player's repertoire. Bill Russell blocked shots that other players would have given up on because of his leaping abilities. Look no further than Oscar Robertson or David Thompson launching a jump shot from 3 ft. in the air, over defenders, to see how effective above the rim game is. A good offensive rebounder with a decent vertical can go for a tip in or putback jam. Jumping above the rim isn't style over substance.
i could take Bill to the hole.... im a little shorter, but i would burn him and probably outshoot him at the 3 point line as well. He is overated in my opinion.
WanderleiSilva29 bill russell would kick all of are asses in basketball i play ball & i wanna go pro one day, but you gotta take into consideration of when he was born, if he was born in todays era damn he would be a beast
nobody can stop my rush.... i take you and Bill to the hole..... and i could probably outshoot Larry Bird, so you guys would have a hard time covering me.
Stick to the UFC,you laughable troll.Keep going to your fanclub meetings, telling everyone hoe great you'd be...against a basketball player who actually did his talking-and winning-on the court, against the greatest of all-time.You just sit there,on the sideline, alone and ignored and angry, while the rest of the world enjoys the Great #6's highlight reels.Keep talking, but remember when Russ was your age, he had an Olympic Gold,2 NCAA crowns, and half a dozen NBA titles. What've you got?Fanclubs?haha
And back then, steals and blocks weren't cumulated. Instead of having only 4 quadruple doubles in the history of the NBA, Wilt, Kareem, Russell and others could have got some.
jordan wasn't even born when russell domnaited the nba, remember there's only 1 bill russell and 1 michael jordan. i wonder how many titles russell won as player/coach?
Holy mother of ancient crap left in the fridge for 600 years. Bill Russell was like nothing ever seen before. When you talk about who the GOAT is, there is Michael and then there is Russel. There are no others worth mention.
A reporter once asked Bill Russell how he thought he would do against Jordan. Russell replied with something like "The question is, How would Jordan do against ME!". The reporter acknowledged Russell's point. Later, Jordan heard about this, and Jordan acknowledged that Russell is the only player he'd be intimidated against. King Russell, Wilt The Stilt, and Air Jordan..in that order...the top 3 greatest of all-time!

The best defensive center: Russell
But Ben Wallace's defense looks much cooler. Probably because he's shorter.

Oscar Robinson AVERAGED A TRIPPLE DOUBLE. It's true go look it up. And just imagine if there was a 3 point line.

I agree on Larry Bird, from 1984-87 I think he was the best overall player ever. I do think Jordan is ahead of Magic though.

@coffeecat73 Larry Bird looses out because he didn't have the man on man defensive abilities of the all-time greats and a limited above the rim game.
