The reason 12 AM and 12 PM are the way they are is this: Technically, 12 PM (noon) is neither AM nor PM as it is M (M stands for meridiem or meridies which means 'midday' in Latin) and 12 AM (midnight) is both. But since 12:00:01PM (one second after noon) IS PM (post meridiem), noon is often designated PM, too. By extension, that makes midnight AM. Most people just say noon and midnight to avoid confusion.
As to the question at 5:22 it's correct that midnight is 12 hours after midday so 12PM. Noon is 12 hours after midnight so 12AM, even though we usually use the reverse.

Imagine, in 2010, ANY TV show asking anyone anywhere in any context who wrote a poem by Longfellow!
"Britney Spears, who...?"
"I know! That poem was written by Paris Hilton!"

Re: the midnight question - I usually use 12 N for noon and 12 M for midnight (just a personal observation - you can use whatever you wish).

They sure zipped right along that night - six full games and a partial in one show.
I wonder what that bonus prize was...

@zenarcade64 midnight is actually 12 hours *before* the applicable 'midday', since 12:00 *starts* the day. Hollywood Squares got this incorrect.
