I was born the day this comet appeared

I remember being at my neighbor's with all the neighborhood kids, taking turns with the binoculars. I didn't turn out to be an astronomer or anything, but it definitely is a passion and hobby because of that.

I saw it on an evening from a small back deck and it was as big as the moon from my vantage point with a point on the side of it. I remember thinking to myself a prayer "Dear GOD, thank you for not letting that thing hit our planet and incenerate us like a piece of worthless space dust." It's supposed to come by about ever 2000 years or so. The only recording of such an object historicaly is a verse in the bible where 3 wise men witnessed "A star in the sky stood up and moved across the sky"

This was a cool sight for sure! I was up in Northern Canada, training with the Army, we all watched it through our rifle scopes :) Something I won't forget.

Seriously, I was 16 at the time and I, too, have video footage of Hale-Bopp, taken from Ohio. Not to brag, but my footage is a tad better. (I had a stronger zoom on my camera.)

I heard that some scientists in 1997 covered up the evidence of the actual distance of the comet from the earth. Scientists said it was nearly 90 million miles away, but several people thought that the AU distance was a lie. They thought that the scientists didnt want to cause an uproar of fear.

I was eight! It's too bad because I don't remember actually seeing the comet, but I do remember that night we went with a telescope to a big hill in our town; I also got to see Saturn that night - one of our neighbors had a really high powered telescope - and I remember that very clearly.

Beautiful. Simply sublime. I can remember going outside to look at this heavenly object when I was six years old. I'll never forget the overwhelming sense of awe I felt. I can only hope that I'll still be around to see Halley make her return voyage in 2061.

My friend said it was fitting that we saw that, because his dad wad a fighter pilot in WWII. And A blaze of glory would take him home.
