hey, guys, she's from Oslo, Norway, which means that she has a different accent than we do. Not everybody in the world sounds like stupid americans. That is all. (yep, i'm also american, shut the fuck up)
@Spazmologist Mouth! You- go wash it right now. You do NO justice to any artist speaking gutter-snipe! And I agree....many Mercans' are stupid. Keep up the good work!
@Spazmologist I wouldn't say Americans are stupid. The majority of us just have this condescending mentality where we believe that our country has to be better in every aspect. It's disturbing to me really. (And I'm an American too. Nebraska to be more exact)
She pronouce the world almost like in french maybe that is where she learn it? open a little bit your mind more that in english. If we become frustrated everytime ,YOU , put french world in your song with a terrible pronouciation. No,we find that an english accent and twist in words like «rendez-vous» and «voilà» is cute! We are proud when you try very hard to talk french, we don't judge. Purists are people so straight that we can close their A..H.. with a simple grain of millet.
@Zombbg4 me too! i was just thinking of how much she reminded me of imogen. i happen to love this type of music, but its not very common... its like... floaty dreamy with a tiny bit of techno in the back but not really... and a soft voice... its such lovely art <3
It's quite simple really. The reason for the difference in pronunciation is because Kate is not a native English speaker. She's from Norway. I don't think anyone will get on someone who doesn't speak the language, as a first language. If you do, then your just missing out on a beautiful song, the message doesn't change because there is a slight "mispronunciation."
I love Kaleidoscops and yours is my heartly-lovliest! This beautyful melodie, this touching words and this wonderful colors does so good, it's like balsam for heart and soul.
Thank you very much for this colorful "light of my day" ;-),
The word is in the song...but a kaleidoscope is essentially a little tub with mirrors in it, with tiny pieces of coloured glass/plastic at the end. You look through the top and see a repeated pattern that changes as you turn it.
haha i watch this on acid and i always thinnk the picture on it is changing color and shape and stuff. This is my first time to watch it sober and realize its not :P
@ViviPoop That's true. After all, kaleidoscope is a Greek word, and nobody except Greeks has the right pronounciation. So it doesn't matter the way you say it, but what it means... The song is cool by the way ;-)
I gather that ethnocentrism is taking a role in pride and causing people to bicker over differences that shoudn't be dismayed but appreciated for their context and the beauty of their uniqueness.
Yeah. I guess maybe it's because I'm a teacher. I prefer people to be correct and correct me if I am mistaken. If they're not, or they have absolute apathy towards appearing halfway intelligent (a.k.a. those that insist grammar doesn't have any value online)it drives me up the wall.
Obviously Kate is intelligent; can't argue with that. I just wish she'd said the word correctly so I could really enjoy this song and not complain to my boyfriend about it.
I understand the accent bit, and most of her words are quite charming with the accent, but when it's the primary word of the song, the NAME of the song, particular care should be taken to make it sound correct ... in my opinion anyway. :)
yes, but still, its not like she can help it. i can see where you're coming from, but some people with accents can't help their pronunciation of some words. =)
For being a teacher maybe you could exercise a bit of tolerance for another person's culture and subtle differences in their speech. Quite possibly the pronunciation that she uses for the word is the only pronunciation that she has ever known, being from Norway. Sometimes we Americans can be a bit too ignorant to the fact that English is not the only language and our pronunciations of words are not the only ones even where English is spoken. Pronunciation even differs here. Like the word road.
I recognize subtle differences in many people's ways of speaking, and I speak English and French. I'm aware that words in English are often also pronounced differently due to region or what not. Doesn't change the fact that this one irritates me. But thanks for your two cents. ;) Southern accents do the same. I don't hate southerners, I don't hate Kate, the accents just make me cringe a bit. My boyfriend hates how I say 'onion'. To each their own. :)
The beautiful thing about America is that all Americans are entitled to say and do anything including criticize other fellow Americans and that right to do so was secured by people who have fought for this country like myself so before you feel the need to take away a fellow Americans unalienable right of freedom of speech you should probably check yourself as to not make an ass out of yourself.
I don't mean to harp on this but what exactly is "correct" pronunciation anyway? In the northeast US the pronunciation of the word quarter is different than that of the same word in California which is also different in the state of Tennessee, which is different from places in Canada. Who is right and which pronunciation is "correct"? Ask someone from each mentioned region and you will undoubtedly receive differing answers. Again not trying to argue but "correct" pronunciation is open to debate.
If you look up pronunciation guides online, most of them will have it spelled out a way contrary to the way she says it. Is there something wrong with that? No. It just makes me cringe. I love her voice, but this song drives me up the wall ;)
Some words some different when sung, especially depending on the melody. This skewed pronounciation may be necessary to keep the melody together. If you pay close attention, you will hear words mispronounced in song after song for this reason, and phrases intentionally said gramatically incorrect because it is catchier that way...
I love Norwegian music. I happened upon this after visiting Anne marie Almedal's MySpace page. This is amazing. WHY can't the music industry in the States get with it and realize that interesting music from talented people would sell?

this song just strings up a plethora of emotions.
the melancholic strings invites bittersweetness, yet is saturated by the uplifting and sincere lyrics. not to mention kate's untainted vocals...
it really is a song for all moods - unobtrusively poignant and strikes on all those chords in your sub-conscience.
