how close up can this be done? and i dont mean with a camera. is this purely for stage?

It really depends. To be honest I personally would never do this in my close up gigs. Its just not clean enough for me.
None of it can be inspected so i opted to use it merely for camera and promo purposes.

ITR? no it doesnt, very similar though. Its a really good effect but only really for video.
