A very touching wave of a painting. I have no idea what you the artist intended to portray. As for me, a viewer, who is a longtime student of co-dependency and emotionally damaged children who grow up to be unable to feel connection with others because the connection with self has been so badly shattered, to me this painting represents egocentriism born out of ignorance. Both figures in the painting would benefit from learning more about their own unfulfilled inner child.

This painting is a grim representation of the internal wars of the heart vs the external view of public interest. The figure on the left is actually Aquaman. He wants so badly to actually have a super power that matters. So, he reaches inside of himself and finds the spirit of Venus. He then concentrates hard enough for her to appear to him physically and guide him to find his inner peace. His final test was to accept the rose of a dying love, but he denies it; thus canceling the sad cycle.

3-- indifference is egocentrism crossed with ignorance--willful ignorance. "I don't care" is a very in-your-face, egocentric statement, especially if someone faces you with their hurt plainly shown as evidenced by the dying flower in girls hand.

The faceless figure could be the object of an unexpected romance that occurs during a streak of bad life-changing events (indicated by rain), such as deaths of close loved ones. Such romances do happen during times of pain.

Ignorance=lack of info, sometimes a purposefully unwillingness to accept info. Indifference is knowing but not caring. Both of these are characteristics of being egocentric. The man is so egocentric he is ignorant of what should be obvious, and indifferent to that which he clearly can see... the dying flower of her love...thus bringing a wave of melancholy over the woman. I'm quite sure it's indifference. He's not "me me me me" as egocentrics usually are. And I doubt that he's ignorant of her or her feelings...it's almost as if he's not even aware of her. Maybe this is about unrequited love? Perhaps the colourful world and the change from it to a single dying flower represent how she views love before and after....and how the opposite of love isn't hate but indifference.

Here's to hoping one tear doesn't make a wave that drowns her...

I believe that there isn't an exact answer to the first question. Everything people see in this world is based upon their own circumstances and what they have seen in life. As an example, it is like rose colored glasses or purple colored or even orange colored glasses that affect the way we see the things around us. I believe its not just one interpretation but many interpretations and all three categories that you listed are prevalent in this painting.

I think the boy and the girl might have had a relationship at some point (which is what the butterfly might symbolize behind the man... enjoyment) . Maybe something bad happened, maybe she lost his trust (which would be symbolized by the rain) and that is why she's holding out the rose... trying to make amends. However, whatever happened was so bad that the man decides not to care, and looks away, ignoring the rose she is offering.

From an art school perspective, the blue faceless man is an object in the composition but not the focus. She is clearly the focus here. The red, drooping flower seems to suggest brokenheartedness.

So I go with indifference, as I'm basing this on her feelings. Ignorance would still not explain her heart being broken. And she cannot feel his egocentrism, so that doesn't make sense.
