Man everything that comes out of that studio is totally musical, warm, punchy & FAT!!! I haven't been able to achieve this with my digital home stuff that's for sure.
@efertheredfish This isn't our studio, this is Ocean Way Recording which is a famous studio in Los Angeles that we worked with to create a drum library called Ocean Way Drums. As far as mics go Allen Sides, the owner of the studio, has one of the most amazing mic collections in the world. I rent from them when I am in town. Tube Neumanns, Telefunken... you name it they have it. Great studio! This is just one of the rooms. Gear galore.
@321harold and when you hear the final product it ether has been limited within an inch of its life of a record that was recorded and mastered in multimillion dollar rooms is being played in rooms fileed with tile and mirrors and other reflective services, i used to pull my hair at the irony
@321harold Some of the stats I've heard are impressive. Over a billion albums have been sold that have been recorded at Ocean Way (how many studios can claim that?) and also at one time half the Billboard chart was recorded at Ocean Way apparently as well. For anyone who knows the studio it doesn't even need defending. Everyone's got an opinion, informed or not. But one thing is rather universal... and that's universal audio gear! Haha. Who doesn't love all this tube gear? Ok some. Few.
Yes, very cool gear, but most people are not going to be able to tell a diff between a home studio with really good plugs and a few good mics and pre's and Ocean Ways vintage gear. But, yes, I would still love to own some of that stuff.
@guitardaze I agree. Similarly, there's an argument about dithering or not on certain bit sizes. The not dither side says that some kid downloading a super lossy version of the song isn't going to hear the "warm, saturation," or the "truncation."
Most regular people can't even tell the difference between analog and digital. Granted, I'd love a Pultec anyday but the fact of the matter is good songs can be made through digital.
@afroskel not only that i was amazed when lay peopl cant tell or care if they are hearing a drum machine or wether vocals are in tune, I gave up that rediculous attention to dteail because it is no appreciated in the lame coverter and gain wars era we live in
Yes, there is an audible difference between all three products. Which is better is subjective. OWD has unique features and in this economy it is a FACT that people can get Ocean Way Drums for as little as 99 dollars and 39 per a la carte downloadable kit. It has a version at every price point knowing the facts I don't see how anyone complain unless they are just bashing for some unknown reason. Re: tube and class A vintage gear... it is the most desirable studio gear there is today.
Not sure what your reasons are for the negativity and why it's of interest for you to bash OWD. But in any case I might as well make some clarifications for anyone reading your comment. You're quoting the price of OWD Platinum HD. There are versions of Ocean Way Drums that are as low as $199. Secondly one day recording at a studio like Ocean Way can cost more than the Platinum (especially a day with an engineer such as Allen Sides or Steven Miller). Lastly, dated analog gear? Ok enough comedy.
experiment03 is a complete moron. He will be working at Arby's for the rest of his life with the indulgent ignorance he spews out of his mouth. Ocean Way is the Gods among studios. Allen Sides, Jack Joseph Puig are sonic genius's which is why every record they've created has been a smash hit.
God bless you for continuing the ANALOG Tradition. Today's stuff just isn't the same. Am I right in saying that the recording engineer is quickly becoming thing of the past and all that will be left in the future is a person in front of a computer with protools and a multi input DA converter?
Most music listeners are not going to know if an album was recorded with all this vintage gear or if the studio used vintage plugin models etc. Especially after the squashed mastering that goes on these days. If it sounds good, it sounds good no mater how cool or expensive the gear is. I still would like to get my hands on some of that stuff though. :)
You record with analog gear onto a digital medium. So you want to have the best converters and clocks to retain the audio quality of what coloration the analog gear provides. A mix of both worlds... and yes there is tight security. It's also right next to a famous film lot and they have eyes on you 24/7 when you just park anywhere near there.
Unbelievable studio. Oceanway has always been on my list with Abbey Road, Cello, and a few more greats. Hopefully more of these great legends will survive through this spell of industry hoops and home studio nutter.
Lang EQs and just above are gates I believe. Also, just to know, it is of course multivelocity and multiarticulation across the keyboard as well on OWD. Just go to the web site and check it out further to see more.
Those are the Lang EQs. Gates just above the Fairchild. By the way, upp there are multiple velocities and articulations across the keyboard. The audio in video is just one example but there are more on oceanwaydrums (dot) com

Its so amazing how dumb some people can be with these negative comments!
Ocean Way has a track record and has proven themselves time and time again. Many of the hit songs you hear on the radio were recorded at Ocean Way!!

Where do converters and clocks enter into the picture with analogue gear? Hope they have a 24 hour security guard with all that gear there.....
