  • I think a bit of heat would have did the trick with much less work but good on ya for posting.

  • Thank god he stopped after the second fret. Thought I'd be watching for hours...phew

  • wait? those are high frets XD

its unusual to take them out and the ones youre taking out are perfect wires , dude seriously?

  • boy am i glad thats over...like pulling teeth

  • "how to remove the fretwire"

  • Did you get this tool at stewmac?

  • i hope that guitar isnt expensive because you devalued that guitar beyond words ... i repair and build guitars myself but if i buy an expensive guitar i send it to the manufacturer to avoid devaluing it

  • How something so primitive can capture the attention of over 35,000 views. This is beyond entertainment. Rock on and good luck with iron claws. ;) thanks for posting.

  • I can't watch this!!! It is scary as hell!

  • its like watching a scary movie...silenceeeee....

  • Glad to see you took the time to tape up the fretboard to make sure you didn't scratch or dent it. **sarcasm**

  • I did the math. It takes 4 days to change them all.

  • @musicwayne1 2 and a half minutes per fret pull for a guitar that probably only has 20 frets equals about 50 minutes and assuming he puts them back in at the same rate it only takes 1 hour and 40 minutes to pull and replace every fret (not mentioning leveling and crowning which take as little an hour if using a crowning file) ... what grades did you get in math class?

  • this is for pulling cows teeth not frets, LOL

  • i can save you people 2 minutes. 1. take @BAUTZENERBABY's advice to heart, and in summary of the video, he pulls the fret out with the clamps. ur welcome.

  • Do it he way he is here and you'll have tons of chip out,If the frets are glued in use a soldering iron on the frets to loosen the glue then pull the frets

  • Vou avisar o Ibama

  • Oh dear...

  • Stewart MacDonald-Google it-Sells a MUCH SMALLER Plier called The FRET TANG NIPPER, this is less apt to GOUGE out the Ends of your Fingerboard, than this Big One used here. Stew/Mac really takes the guesswork out of a Touchy job-SPECIAL Tools and Other neat Instrument related Supplies. Okay-end of Commercial! 8 )

  • poor guitar MFK !!!

  • Great thanks for sharing this valuable info.

  • This method takes too damn long.

  • I was rooting for the FRET

  • This method is NOT PROFESIONAL! the guitar is not even hold firmly and moves all the time, and to apply heat on the frets will help also.

  • having the frets heated would expand the metal thus making them harder to remove..would it not?

  • @HappyTheMan696 No. Heating the fret first losen the glue and they come out alot easier and quicker. By the time he got this one fret taken out if the fingerboard, I always take out 6 frets.

  • @RudeRaptor what would you use to heat them

  • @BAUTZENERBABY I would have to agree...seems you could damage the fingerboard very easy that way!

  • @BAUTZENERBABY how come heat will help ? it will enlarge the fret

  • @BayouBluesMan if you apply heat to it, the glue inside will kind of melt and make it easier to remove. You wont make marks on the fret board if u do use heat to remove it.

  • If you put a soldering iron to the frets for a second or two, it loosens things up quite a bit. Go watch this: re-fretting a Fender Stratocaster PART 1. Awesome series

  • When I saw it lift up, I felt like saying "hallelujah!" That seems like a good method, although it is inevitably tedious.

  • I would hate to see what his shop rate would be if he did that for a living.

  • whats involved in a "fret level"..i was going to do my 24 fret guitar but think i'll give it a miss now.

  • boring

  • Placing thin tap between frets helps protect fret board from gouging and still allows for a close-in bit on frets with your tool. Also a home made neck bench lined with padding, clamping neck down for stability makes the job easier taking any stress off the neck.

  • a little music would have been fitting, yeah think?

  • dude just put a match to it

    then roll one up

sit back and watch it burn...

  • This is just what a "guitar technician" does. Changing frets does not take magic, voodoo, or any special ritual. What do you people expect it to look like?

  • I hope you don't make your living doing this!!!

  • funny i agree

  • dude you were either drunk or you just hated that guitar....

  • WHAT AN ANIMAL!!

  • I just removed the frets from my guitar. and what I dit was ... I heated the frets so that the glue under the fret begon to warm up.. then I used the back of an hammer :) it was verry easy :) took hell lot of time but the result was great :)

  • OMG that looked tedious as fuck.

  • I would just spend the money for a guitar tech to do it properly

  • AGREED!

  • I would never do that to my guitar!

  • phallystorm is absolutely correct! You can actually see the fretboard splintering from the pulling job.

  • No fretboard protection? Wrong tool, ripping out rosewood/ebony from the slots is a no no.. I hope you plan on using oversized fret wire when replacing, or you might as well use epoxy/crazy glue like EVH did. Ever hear of tapping them out from the edge?

  • I used a soldering iron to heat glue then I pulled them straight out like video - but I also used crazy glue to seat them - if not crazy glue what then? - (for a 76 Les Paul) it's been two years and it plays nice. I took the advice from the Erlewine Book.

  • you dont need any glue to seat them

  • @FilmForger Yes Dans' Book from Stewart MacDonald, and/or his D.V.D.s is the way to go...TAPING THE FRETBOARD [which takes time] is WORTH IT, in case the Barbs on the Tangs pull out a little Chip from the Board. When U pull up the tape slowly U'll be able to spot any that did, and crazy-glue, and lightly file it after to Blend it back into place.

  • Won't the barbs on the fret tang chew up the slot if you knock them out from the side?

The tool looked ok to me, pretty much what I've seen recommended on numerous tutorials.

I agree that some tape over fretboard and heating the frets to soften the glue may have helped though.

  • zzzzzzzzzzz aburrido cabron

  • Yep, get out the iron if you want to loosen it up.

  • im sorry dude but that was really boring

  • aleluia , depois de 2 horas o cara conseguiu retirar um traste, sem comentarios, horrivel este video

  • i agree u should heat it first

  • whats the point? it looked fine before!

  • I guess he's going to replace them with solid gold or platinum. Gold would go well with a crappy guitar.

  • i broke my damm fret i freaking broke it

  • this video is pissin me off. No sound or nothin....im gettin pissed

  • As a note.....You should cover the fret board with strips of masking tape first. Also, heat the frets first with a soldering iron to heat and dissolve the glue holding them in for easy removal.

Just because someone posts a how-to online, doesnt mean it is the correct way to do it.

    BE CAREFUL!!!!
