I never knew about an amphibious invasion of southern France - I don't know why it's been glossed over in military history films. The invasion must have been even more secret than at Normandy, since the Nazis had no idea where they might land in southern France, or when.

The German state today still systematically uses torture and assassination to shut down everyone complaining immediately. Examples are Heiner Gehring ( author ) or Uwe Barschel. @grazyarnie I was told outside Germany that every German today is a NAZI. Obviously this refered to all the Germans lying for their Deutschland because they had been accustomed as little kids to do so. Most Germans grow up knowing about torture and murder by BND and Verfassungsschutz. And of course they deny it. Like in the old times...

This was "Operation Dragoon", mostly the American 7th Army helped by the French 1st Army (yes Virginia, France still had an army). Occuring only two months after the Normandy invasion, this operation remains almost forgotten, because the Normandy invasion had gone so spectacularly well that this intended second pincer was never really required. German resistance was weak and they retreated quickly. The port of Marseilles was gained, which proved invaluable given difficulties on the north coast.

@stuartthegrant There's more every day. It's fabulous, is it not? The MILITARY history of WWII is the most vital part to study. Everything else, the Holocaust, Mussolini,post-WWII Stalinism, Mao-Tse Tung, the Nazi rise to power, the militarism of Japan, the Japanese Atrocities, ALL of it is clarified when one studies that history. Everything relates to the conquest of continents by powers driven by fascist philosophy.
