i never heard of arthur russell until I saw this video and looked for the original. wish i hadn't bothered, because the original is terrible. i will never understand why people will artificially ruin their singing just so that they can sound 'unique'. thanks, jens, for rescuing a decent song. love your voice, and glad that you can just let it be what it is.
Very unique and creative take on an extremely unique and creative song. Nothing will come close to touching the original, and it's nice to see Lekman do it in an entirely different style, yet retain the beauty of the original.
Like many others, I didn't know of Arthur Russell until I heard this cover, I decided to look for his material and instantly fell in love with World of Echo, he's the greatest unsung genius of the past 50 years.
Luckily, the great Mr. Lekman isn't trying to replace the late great Mr. Russell. Just drawing some attention to an all-too-often ignored talent. Kalimbas are cool too, as are the rows of yellow seats in this video.
I was expecting a ukelele, but was pleasantly suprised to see and hear a thumb piano. My thumb piano doesn't have enough notes to do this. I don't have enough talent either!
Isn't one of the pegs on his Kalimba tuned wrong? I saw him perform this a week ago and it sounded fine. What a great arrangement! I wish he would record a bunch of his songs with just kalimba and voice. I also have pics of his kalimba on my facebook account.
"i'm so busy, so busy thinking about, kissing you"
i also love how he stops playing his instrument at the end and keeps singing it just makes the song that much more powerful-- he really knows how to evoke emotions in a simple yet beautiful manner

Kalimba is just another name for thumb piano. Sometimes they're called mbiras as well. Lovely instruments.
