HOKAY. Sylar's inherent ability is 'intuitive aptitude', or understanding how things work just by looking at them - which is why he's such a good watchmaker. That ability comes with the insatiable desire to understand more about other abilities. He bashed Brian Davis' head in first, and looked at his brain to find the anomaly so he could use telekinesis himself. After that, Sylar used that telekinesis to open other people's heads open and get their abilities.
