look you dont have to like u2 thats fine ,but they certainly are not insecure due to the fact they are the biggest rock band of modern times ,they sell out all there gigs within mins of tickets going on sale,and if your such a big fan of simple minds why not vocus on them and let u2 be what they are the biggest top number 1 kings of the rock world and your channel is a great channel but most simple mind fans like both bands,so your wrong to say if your a u2 fan you cant be a true simple minds 1

gas thing is attacking u2 doesn change the fact that they are something most irish are very proud of there music ,and yes simple minds are amazing but why compare them is beyond me ,they sound so differant, sides u2 were compared more wih echo and the bunneymen than simple minds, all of these bands broke out of punk with new wave rock ,and stiff little fingers ,clash and so on changed there tone also ,bono and jim are great friends and have a shared investment in celtic fc so why not enjoy both

@ultanbeare All i know is that the spell among Kerr and Vox broken long time ago.I prefer Simple Minds,U2 weren't in my tastes,so i have nothing to add,besides that a redblooded Simple Minds fan never would like U2.

But agree with something:U2 too often are compared to ANY other interesting bands,they feels so insecure?If they are the greatest band their fans claiming why searching comparisons allway with any other successful band?

why oh why would anyone try and split these two bands. Both are brilliant and don't deserve to be criticised. U2 have delivered some classics and are excellent performers. I haven't seen Simple Minds live in a long time however if my memory serves me correct were bloody awesome.

i love both bands ,and both versions of this song ,saw u2 and simple minds at same gig in 1982 in dublin ,plus big country ect.. and i have to say both were amazing and big country were the best live act of that day ,i have seen simple minds many times and u2 also, but that gig they were just wow good ,simple minds are legends and u2 are also as for whos better it demands on the mood ,i love them both, simple minds version of this song is better ,but u2s is great to ,maybe i change mind ? n1

I used to listen to the albums War and Sparkle in the Rain very frequently back in the early to mid eighties. But I have to say that Simple Mind's version is more original, more memorable. U2, on the other hand sounds like what you would expect from U2, a little bland but stil good but not as good as SM's

As said by other contributors - these are two different entities. Jim did seem to bother getting out of bed to for his effort though. As long as you enjoy whichever version does it for you then everyone can be happy. Why there has to be a competition is beyond me. Anyone have any thoughts on the original? Never heard it until just now. Must get out of the cave more often. Just hope I don't bump into a pointless battle about who is the better. I can go to the Gulf for that shit.
