That is the proof of Barcelona's style being a philosophy rather than just a trend like some people say...that season was bad,they made it only to the 4th place...and yet they played passing game.

The idea dates back to the 1960's and 1970's Ajax of Marinus Michels...he got ideas from Hungary's Mighty Magiars and improved them creating TOTAL football.

His Clockwork Orange,his Ajax and his Barça became the example and they have been trying to play that way ever since...for better or for worse.

Whilst watching another sintalling Barca performance vs Athletico (Barca 3-0 up in 26 mins, Sep 2011) my mind drifts back to this game.

This goal was almost exactly 10 years ago, Nov 2001, & Barca were playing slick one-touch passing football back then.

Guardiola's current barca side get all the plaudits, but lets not forget, Barca have been skillful for a long time.

Rexach used to be Cruyff's Assistant Manager during the years of the Dream Team and he was a very skilled right wing when he played alongside Cryff himself under the management of Rinus Michels,coach of the Clockwork Orange in the 1970's and the inventor of this style..
