Fun (?) fact. The KKK initially formed as a sort of traveling clown group to cheer up southerners and take their minds off the destruction from the Civil War. All they really had by the way of costumes was sheets. Of course, the best way to cheer up southerners at the time was to lynch black people, so the tone of the group soon changed.
