That "middle" lane in the center of I-80/94 serves as an eastbound express lane for thru traffic, as opposed to local eastbound traffic in the lanes to your far left.
Yep...the closer you get to Chicago, the more all of the towns just run together from one state to the next.
That first river you passed going north on I-355 was the Chicago Sanitary & Ship Canal; the second was the Des Plaines River...I'm from Chicago.

the middle lane I think is for people who are carpooling - I think that's what they call it - I may be wrong...
