I also have a ludwig maple classic kit w/ an 8x12 to a 16x16 floor. Most drummers will go 8x12 to 14x14 or 9x13 to 16x16. The 12 to 16 set up is very easy to tune and things don't get muddy. If you can, can you give some thoughts on why you seem to lean towards the 12 to 16 set up.
@jmdrummer7 Well, just to make it weirder, I also have a 14x15 floor tom! I've never really met a 13" tom that I've been happy with the tone or feel and I really like 12s - having a 12 & a 13 are a bit too close for getting a good tonal spread for me. Yes, the 15 & 16 are only an inch apart, too, but if I go to the higher end of the 15's range and the lower on the 16, they work very nicely together.
@bleener I agree about the 12 & 13 situation. I thought about adding a 14" floor tom but I was never comfortable w/ 2 floor toms. The 14" alone doesn't have enough depth for me. I agree also about the 13", when tuned high most seem to be ok but when tuned low most seem to go flat and boxy sounding. Thanks for your input.
@eso045 It wouldn't be a whole lot different - I tend to have the bottom snare head quite a bit tighter than the top (although the top is pretty tight, too!), but I still look for even tension/pitch at all the tuning rods.
On the bass drum, I usually have the batter head fairly loose and the front reso head a little tighter for some tone.
I'll see about doing a video for these soon. Thanks!
