@OhMyGoshMaryAnn No honest question is dumb! Melamine is a high nitrogen content chemical. The high nitrogen content of melamine can raise protein readings for a food (nitrogen content is often used to estimate protein). Unethical people can add melamine to products to make the protein content appear higher. It's been used to water down milk for example. Ingesting melamine can cause kidney damage, so this is a serious problem. I hope this helps! MelaMEAN in food is MEAN STUFF!

If you type melamine powder tradekey into google, the first link will show you requests of groups attempting to purchase melamine from China. One of these is a juice drink company from Mexico. Companies from countries that the FDA considers "low risk" can buy these junk additives and add them to their products to fake higher protein content and ship the tainted product to us without scrutiny. This has been going on for a long time. This country is so sold out.
