yes, it is based on a novel which also was already
brought to film in the 1940's (by the way Max Ophuels directed it.)
But this doesn't make it any less impressing-
actually, an even more interesting acurate interpretation of the story for these days.

this story looks remarkably familiar, except the killer wasn't her son, it was her daughter, again with the mothering tryingto cover everything up, while at the same time being blackmailed.
