heifetz has the best vibrato, the best portimento and his tone is just too way unqiue, Vebgerov plays with lots of characteristics but sometimes his tone is too rough, you get tired after listening to him awhile
Any serious violinist who has listened to Vengerov's solo album, and especially the Ysaye Ballade and Echo Sonata, would realize that Maxim Vengerov is easily the greatest violinist of this generation; and, in my opinion, is even greater than Heifetz.
Heifetz had the legendary oozy vibrato and dexterous left-hand; whoopdy doo. Vengerov has a deep musicality, as well as an equally formidable technical facility. His emotional input sets him apart from everyone else.
@TheAbnerCoutinho Sure, Vengerov has much more passion, warmth, involvement and soul in his playing then Heifetz who is almost perfect but quite impersonal. Not speaking about ridiculous tempos sometimes (Tschaikowski etc.), rather old fashioned "mewing" when changing positions and better not to mention his Bach rendering ...
What emotional input? IT's all superficial, there's just no music it that, just bunch of exaggerated strangled Ysaye sonata. You should go and find Ysaye playing himself and sit down and think about it and try to understand that making stupid faces and moving around like an imbecile does not make you 'the greatest violinist of this generation'.
Surely you must hate Andre Rieu aswell then... and other than Ysaye, can you name a violinist of this century that would play this piece with more emotion?
Well I know a famous violinist(no names mentioned) that told me that once he was with him and he asked andre to try his violin and he said me that he played very bad,now we can understand why we never heard him solo playing,he is simply a show man making millions
abburidotakaria, it is simply everyone's individual opinion who are the best violinists right now. In my opinion, noone is as good as the oldies (Menuhin, Oistrakh, Heifetz, Stern, etc.) But if I were to say who were the best violinists of the time, it would have to be Vengerov, Zuckerman, and definitely Anne-Sophie Mutter.
This is the best violinist of the new generation, there is no doubt about it in my mind. I certainly don't like everything he does, but he is absolutely unique in his musical interpretation, unlike many of the "cookie-cutter" violinists out there. He is the new revolution.
Hmmm... Vengerov easily has greater technical facility than both Hahn and Ehnes. He also seems far more passionate when he plays - compare the renditions of The Girl with the Flaxen Hair. To demonstrate Vengerov's technical virtuosity, one must watch his masterclass with Schottle - when he plays the Ysaye Ballade. Perfection personified.
I really love him! I saw another video of him giving masterclasses and God! he is AMAZING. Of course there exist a lot of incredible musicians, but I think we can't compare them, because each one has his or her scent... THAT is the difference between one musician and another, and for me, THAT is what music is all about.
we will probably tell people this 100000000 times but they wont understand that its all about the music. i cant see why they only worry about who's better.high shool stuff.
he is also very musical. he doesnt have to play more technically advanced than he should for stupid snobs that pick on violin clips for things like that on youtube. He plays for audiences, people. I hope no one forgets to realize that while displaying an amazing array of techniques for an audience can be great, its just ONE of the many ways to grab it's attention and in no way is it equivalent to touching someone's heart by making sounds that are extremely pleasant or relaxing to the human ear.
dies irae is in alot of the mvts of ysayes solo sonatas... ALOT of them. And i would also add that this is a music video clip. its not him actually playing it. Im sure he can play it without moving, but it just shows how dedicated he is to make sure he gets all the sounds he wants. i agree with gummiibearss on maxim's movement
and about his movement, that's different for every musician. obviously the movement of his body works for him, and as far as i can tell, it must be doing some good cause he's amazing. and it is true that professional musicians think maxim vengerov is a whole lot better of a musician then joshua bell. but it's all personal taste.
you can't really compare joshua bell to maxim vengerov. they're both different in styles and they have different ways of playing. when you get to their celebrity status and their level of playing, then start talking about how much they suck. until then, practice and shut up.
Oh for God's sake. Listen to his playing. He is one of the greatest violin talents in history, and was definitely one of the greatest child prodigies since Menuhin. Go and listen to his recording of Shostakovich Concerto No 1 and then say he isn't that great, and learn how to use talking marks.
what on earth are you TALKING about!? Vengerov is one of the worlds greatest violinists! the "moving around" is his way of getting so much feeling in his music. He IS really professional. Dont make yourself look like a fool because you are jealous of his playing, I know for a fact YOU cant play like that, hardly anyone can!
well certainly... I can speak about this... Im a soloist violinist http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vEQyWDq1eoc ... all pro violinists knows that Maxim Vengerov is far better than Joshua Bell... and plus... u can measure levels... for example... u would never see Joshua Bell playing "The Last Rose of Summer" by Wilhel Heinrich Ernst... that's a fact cuz only 8 in the whole world did play this one ;)
I think that's your own personal taste speaking. If Joshua Bell's playing is centred on beauty, Vengerov's is centred on bravura. If you watch the link, be prepared for some shocking bravura at the end, see if you like it.
I love the "bravura." Joshua Bell's playing is centered on the fact that he's a slightly above average violinist with a gorgeous sounding violin. Monkeys could produce good tone on his violin.
Did you watch Torrez's link or do you mean you love Vengerov's bravura? What I was shocked by was the distortion of Torrez's ending, which upsets the natural balance of Vivaldi's work. If you love Vengerov's bravura, I'm much more inclined to agree with you, but since Joshua Bell has come up in this thread, I want to stress that both offer something individual and defend Joshua Bell's beautiful playing ("gorgeous sounding" PLAYING John) from this ridiculous onslaught.
No you are NOT a soloist. You wish you were. The Vivaldi you play is a shame. The problem is not only the last note...it's everything. But most of all your attitude as if you were the greatest violinist on earth. Simmer down now, street fiddler!!!
David, more than eight violinist in the world can play The Last Rose; there are many players with the technical capacity. I don't see how or why people make up these 'facts.'
Vengerov has amassed a very compelling body of work for someone so young. i don't put too much stock in the video which was obviously filmed to be 'viewer friendly'. He plays some of the best Prokofiev I've ever heard.
No, he's nothing like Joshua Bell, but they're both very fine musicians. Milstein and Menuhin, on the other hand, were gods. ; ))
He's nothing like Joshua Bell? Are you kidding me? You obviously don't know music and the violin. Joshua Bell is good. Keyword: good, not extraordinary. He has talent and appeals to the audience, but to professional musicians, it's evident that he has a lot of work to do.
exagerated? lack of emotion? make up your minds, there might be other violinists (not saying they're better) but you have to face the fact of Vengerov being a GREAT musician with great technique and he transmits feelings and emotions alright, go watch him perform and then we talk.
Sometimes u have to let your body go as the way the bow goes to continue the flow of the movement. Move your body towards ur bow when ur up bow then move ur body back when ur going downbow.
