Mary Lou Retton should never have received any medal - never mind a gold. If the Russians had been there she wouldn't have stood on the podium. Olga Mostepanova. Irina Baraksanova was also quite good, and of course, Natalia Yurchenko. But Mostepanova was the complete package. Retton will forever live with the stigma of knowing she didn't deserve that gold.
I disagree, you guys have to understand it was more then just perfection considering there is no such thing. It was about having the it factor which Mary Lou and Nadia had, it was about the presentation, the artistry, the agression, that kind of dynamic gymnastics influences the judges and considering where gymnastics is today and hw it's become non existent in the US it says something! BRING BACK THE 10.0
What Mary Lou had as far as the 'it' factor was the home team advantage, and no Soviet or East Germans to contend with. I wouldn't use the word 'artistry' to describe her gymnastics either. To me the the true 1984 Olympic Champion was the 1984 Alternate Games Champion-Olga Mostepanova. SHE had true artistry, grace, and athleticism compared to MLR. Jmo
I also always thought that throughout the 70's and 80's gymnastics was plagued by politics. It seemed so many scores were manipulated and many of the 10.0's awarded were not deserved. It is true of today that the new code of points has greatly decreased the chance of inflated scores. Although I do find that the new scoring system is much harder to understand. :)
There was too much politics involved in gymnastics in the 70s and 80s, some of those 10.0's weren't deserved. Didn't Retton take steps at the end of that routine?
I have to agree. If the Soviets were at the 1984 games. Retton wouldn't have come close to a medal with Mostepanova, Shushunova, and Yurchenko

I guess it is possible for the men to win 8 medals in a day... Parallel bars, high bar, rings, floor, vault, all around, team, and pommel horse.

Thx audie83. Very well said!! Darn boycott!!
Mostepanova, Yurchenko, Baraksanova and maybe young Shushunova...they must have been invincible even against home advantage.
