Go to Stewart McDonald, STEWMACdotcom, and you can even build your own pickup. I like them wound like an old Telecaster pickup...not too hot. Or put two on it. One twang and one hot. You can wire them to run one or the other or both.
I love how people are calling this a "Jack White Guitar"! Go ahead on Jack, for getting a new batch of people excited by these! The guitar is called a Diddly Bow, and people of been making them since at least the Great Depression (1920's) when traveling bluesmen didn't have enough money to buy a guitarr and discovered they didn't have to to make music. Lots more on stuff like this--including instructions--at websites like Cigar Box Nation.
@drummermahn 1 2x4 or a piece of wood similiar to size. 1 small flat piece of wood, 2 regular size nails to hold each end of the string. 2 smaller nails to attached the small flat piece of wood to the 2x4 and 1 nails to attached the guitar pick up to the small flat piece of wood.
the hardest part to making this guitar would be grounding the wires and thats not even that hard. If you don't know whty ou are doing there, ask you dad or uncle or a neigbore.
Sydetrakd, I'm trying to make this guitar. The only thing that I am stuck on is how to attach the pickup to the pickup output... Do you duct tape them together or do you soder them together... Need a little help, thanks!
u can skip the output jack u just need to solder the single coil wires to a guitar cable, one to the main part (long bottom bit) and one around he ring just before the point.
I wanted to do such a guitar long time ago. I also have Volumes and Tones, but I think not to use them, but I don't actually know what to do with the pick up. Do I just need to attach it to the jack output?
The pickup i got off my first shitty squire when i EVH'd it. The bottle is a Mike's Hard Lemonade. The wood i just found in my garage. Hope that helps.
the string size isnt to big a deal, depends on what range u want to play in
i just ordered a cheap pickup off ebay for under $2. if u build the device but have no pickup, a microphone will work, i am using both to create a bit of a dual pickup type sound. i have a small cellphone mic that i put right inside the bottle, and have it spliced into the pickup wire, which is spliced into a 1/4" headphone plug which goes into my computer, and then i use vst's as effects plugs.
Sweet diddley bow there! Anyone interested in this kind of instrument and similar primitive instruments should check out the free plans and discussions on cigarboxnation(.)com
@darbtheduck there's basically a ground wire and a hot wire. The ground connects to the ground on the Jack and the hot output goes to the hot on the Jack. Basically you just quickly solder them together.
lol are you playing led zeppelin?

Really nice, but the documentary sucks for people who have been making these things for years. Seasick Steve has used one he made since the 1960's.
But, then again, I'm sure he influenced Jack White.
