The shape of it is very important. If you have not already, check out Dr. Carl Sagan's video on "Flatland". It's about how 3 dimensional entities such as ourselves would appear to an entity living in the 2nd dimension. I think this explains the strange shapes of the rods. If they live in another dimension (4th?) than certainly we would only be able to see a portion of that enitity if it appeared in our 3rd dimensional reality. I will send you the video.
