I think that the great players of the past may have had just as much natural talent. There's no reason to believe that players today have better genes than the players of generations past. But the standards of fitness, technique, and training are higher, and each generation learns from the past one. So athletes get better, but it's not a talent issue.
If you want to become a GREAT TENNIS PLAYER (match player), go to my channel: ( 2knowfun2 ) and watch the video: World Class Tennis (Part1/2) and (Part2/2). I have designed both tennis videos in a very unique way . When you have watched and mastered both my videos (part 1 and part 2), you will become a Great Match Player.
He's correct, but for some reason the only sport where people seem to think that current athletes are inferior to their predecessors is boxing. Even though everything has improved (nutrition, training techniques, athletes evolving, etc) for some reason if one even suggests that a modern great fighter would beat a great who has been dead for 40 years they are characterized as blasphemous.
@borninJune1922 LOL I agree. But I wonder if the same can be said for the women's side. I don't think women's tennis has progressed as fast as men's tennis - the game's just evolved into a power game. But I do think that Steffi Graf, playing as she did in her final year, would still have Grand Slam success these days. But then again, Steffi Graf wasn't that long ago.
@borninJune1922 Late response but I like this topic. That's completely true. I still say you can't compare. If McEnroe was a modern player he might even better than Nadal or Federer...then again maybe his skills lay purely in his touch and he might not have developed quick enough racquet head speed even with current racquets. Same with nadal...playing with a wood racquet wouldv'e limited his stroke options. Would he be as good without the spin? You just can't tell.
winning ugly.... thats all i got to say

Players have fewer weaknesses than ever from the baseline. Cheap points are getting harder and harder to come by.
